Summary of passage: Those who were born Gentiles need to remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of God’s promise, without hope and God in this world. But now through Christ you were far away are now near through Christ’s blood.
For Christ is our peace who has made the two one and destroyed the barrier (the commandments and regulations of the Old Testament). He created in himself the one new man out of two, thus making peace by reconciling both to God and ending the hostility through the Cross. Through him we have access to the Father by one Spirit.
Now we are fellow citizens with God’s people and members of His household. In Christ the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. We are being built to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit.
7a) Remember we used to be separate from Christ, excluded from God’s covenant, living without hope and God.
b) Remember we are now close to God and able to enter heaven and be with him through the atoning blood of Christ. Verse 18 “Through him (Jesus) we both have access tot he Father by one Spirit.” We are God’s people, members of God’s household, built to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit–all because Jesus died for us. Remember: without Christ we would be nothing.
c) It was God who sent His Son so that we may be with Him. We are saved because of God’s plan. Nothing we do can save us. We have nothing to brag about, nothing to claim we did, in order to have this gift. The “self” in righteous has died and we are only righteous through Jesus.
8a) Usually force, violence, threats, coercion, deceitful tactics.
b) Jesus brought himself; sacrificed himself so that we may all have peace.
c) Christ came out of love and with the purpose to unite us to God and destroy the barrier between us. The same goes for our relationships to others. We come out of love with the purpose to unite and tear down barriers.
9) We are one with God. Having the Spirit indwell in use unites us to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We are fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household. We are a holy temple in the Lord and a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit. Being in Christ means we are literally in him, one with him, and thus with God because of Christ.
10) These barriers should not exist since we are all fellow citizens with God’s people and members of the same household. Social and racial barriers are man-made, they are not from God. Thus, they need to be eliminated.
Conclusions: Great emphasis on how we are one with God. He is a part of us and we are a part of Him. Thus, we should do our very best to live up to God’s standards which were exhibited through Christ. Christ died for us and we should have the same attitude. Every day is a gift from God and we should do our very best to live out His will for our lives. It is all God-given and we are merely vessels of Him here on this planet.
