A follow-up to the hugely successful adult book Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo (see my review HERE), this book is a picture book in the same vein written in Colton’s words.
Heaven is for Real for Kids focuses on Colton’s memories of heaven. He talks about Jesus, what heaven looks like, who you meet in heaven, what you do, the animals, the angels, and many more sights and sounds in heaven. He talks about God’s throne and highlights how the Holy Spirit is with you when you pray.
Hebrews 12:2 “Jesus…sat down at the right hand at the throne of God.” I’ve never really pictured an actual throne, even after we studied this passage this year. Until this book where Colton says he saw God’s throne and Jesus was on God’s right side. He says this was his favorite place in heaven. There is an accompanying picture of God with Jesus by His side. Finally! I can visualize it! And what a glory it will be when I see it!
The book concludes with the most important thing Jesus told him, which was how to get to heaven: believe in Him. Then Jesus sent him back because he was answering his Dad’s prayer (something we all struggle with in different ways).
Great lessons for kids (and adults) with vivid pictures true to Colton’s memories. The book ends with a great prayer for kids, which we all prayed. Great Christian picture book and highly recommended for all ages. It was by far the most popular book from our recent library trip.
After reading this book, my oldest asked to read the adult book when she gets a bit older. You know it’s a good book when it prompts the desire to read more!
I have read both versions. I downloaded the kids version to my Kindle by mistake, and after reading the first few pages, I downloaded the adult version. It’s too bad that Colton had to get so sick to see Heaven, but that he came back because God answered his father’s prayer is just delightful. This book actually gave me an idea of what I will see in Heaven. No doubt in my mind that Colgon was there, it was obvious he KNEW what he saw. I think this is a good book to read to kids as a way to teach them about God. The fact that several things happen to Colton while he’s in heaven (he met the sister he never knew he had – from his mother’s miscarraige) and seeing people from his family that he never met were just amazing. Colton truly is a child of God. This book is a must read for anyone beleiving in Jesus. Colton’s conviction is real without queston.
omg what an awesome book, i read it. i had every emotion going, sadness, tears, love, smiles, pain, you named it i felt it., thought i knew the ending , not the way i had envisioned it. what a beautiful description of what heaven is like. i could read that book over and over. there is actually another book worth reading the boy who came back from heaven by kevin malarkey.. another amazing story. and we could learn so much from these stories. sometimes we think we have it bad or and whatever. but the amazing lessons you take to heart .can change how we think and act in our future and what these families have over come. it’s just amazing.
So glad you wrote about this great little book, really opened my eyes too. I gave it to my sister-in-law who has been undergoing chemo for lung cancer, thought it might help her to know how to pray. She doesn’t live near me so not sure what her reaction was, but I will be talking to her next month. I am praying that the door will open to discuss this further.
Funny you should post this as I have just finished reading the book. I had wanted to read it for a long time but I kept putting it off. Well besides all of that it is a wonderful book. But what impress me the most was the Burpo familys’ willingness to put themselves out there in harms way (dangers seen and unseen) to get the message out. Let’s face it there are evil people in this world who do evil things to stop the spread of God’s word every chance they get. I applaud Rev. Burpo and his family for their courage and strong faith in God.
