Summary of Romans 1:21-23

Those who did know God ignored Him and became fools. They, instead, made idols.

BSF Study Questions Romans: From Guilt to Grace Lesson 2, Day 3: Romans 1:21-23

6) Those who did know God ignored Him and became fools. They, instead, made idols. Humans refused to honor or thank God, resulting in empty reasoning, darkened hearts, arrogant folly, and trading His eternal glory for man-made idols.

7) They exchanged God’s glory for worldly things. They worshipped created things rather than the Creator. Humanity exchanged the eternal, majestic glory of the immortal God for worthless images shaped like mortal humans, birds, animals, and reptiles.

8 ) Good question. Myself, others, things. I think as long as you recognize you are putting other things before God and work to change it, you are working at putting God central in all things. Recognizing when you are putting things before God is the key to changing it!

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Romans: From Guilt to Grace Lesson 2, Day 3: Romans 1:21-23

I think the key is to not ignore God. When we focus on God (read His word, pray, do Bible study, etc), we can avoid human idols.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Romans: From Guilt to Grace Lesson 2, Day 3: Romans 1:21-23

Man did know God; he just refused to glorify Him. Therefore, we have no excuse when we make idols for our dark hearts.

Note how important gratitude is here. How grateful are you for what God has given you? And, how often do you remember such?

It’s no wonder we are fools with dark hearts.

This behavior of ours is worthy of God’s wrath upon us. Then we suffer the consequences of our sins.

END NOTES SUMMARIZED

In Romans 1:21–23, Paul traces the fatal downward spiral of human rebellion. Having established that God’s power and divinity are clearly seen in creation (vv. 19–20), Paul explains how humanity actively rejects that light, moving from internal ingratitude to outward idolatry.

1. The Internal Rejection of God (v. 21a)

2. The Mental and Moral Decay (vv. 21b–22)

3. The Tragic Exchange: Idolatry (v. 23)

Conclusion

Romans 1:21–23 demonstrates that rejecting God never leads to human enlightenment, but rather to empty intellects, moral darkness, and the absurdity of trading the Creator’s glory for creation’s idols.
