Summer Devotional May 26th, 2017

1 Peter 2:9:  “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”

Two points here:

  1.  You are special.  If you’re an adult, you don’t hear this enough.  Children have praise heaped upon them all the time for the minutest little things.  Adults do not (even at work we’re not praised a lot).  So I’m here to tell you:  you are special.  You are chosen.  You are loved.  You are holy.  You are God’s.  You have a purpose.  You are living the life God wants you to lead.
  2. We should always be grateful God has called us into the light.  When times are bad and circumstances are spinning out of control and we are feeling overwhelmed by all of these things in our lives that we can’t control, remember it could be worse; infinitely worse.  You could be walking in the dark.  For all of eternity.  Praise Him now for his mercy and goodness.

Summer Devotional May 24th, 2017

Genesis 50:20:  “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”

This is Joseph telling his brothers that what they did to him (threw him in a hole, sold him into slavery, landing in jail and all the other resulting hardships he had to endure as a consequence) were God’s plan.  Man intends evil; God intends good.  God brings good out of bad intentions.  Joseph forgave his brothers and left judgement to God.

This is a reminder to all of us that despite the crap circumstances we may find ourselves in, God has a plan and it is for good.  Sickness, death, tragedy, loss of a limb, senseless violence, financial troubles, bankruptcy, emotional trauma, depression, or overall sense of being lost in this chaotic world, God is there and He is working for good in our troubles.  Have faith.  Trust in Him.  He will do the rest.

Summer Devotional May 19th, 2017

Jeremiah 29:11:  “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

As some of you know, I’ve been on a job search lately.  A job that works for my family and yet affords me an opportunity to do more with my life.  On Wednesday, I received an offer for an accounting position for a start-up company.  Part-time to start.  More responsibilities as the company grows.  It pays little; but I’ll learn a ton!  I’m very excited.

This verse came to mind to comfort all those on the search for a job or a new career or direction in life.  Find comfort in God who knows all and will lead you wherever He wants you in His time.  Trust Him.  That’s all He asks of you.
