SUMMARY OF JOHN 8:31-47

Jesus told the people that The Truth will set those free who believes in him from sin. Everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Since they are looking to kill him, they are not free and are a slave to their father, the devil.

Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

BSF Study Questions John’s Gospel: The Truth Lesson 12, Day 4: John 8:31-47

11a) The freedom Jesus offers is freedom from the bondage of sin’s guilt and consequences. He offers forgiveness. People receive this freedom when they believe in Christ’s saving grace.

b) Not having guilt from sin, the freedom to ask for and receive forgiveness for my sins from others, the freedom to fail and fall and have Jesus pick me up, the freedom to follow His will for my life.

12a) They are not Abraham’s descendants/children of Abraham if they are looking for a way to kill him. They belong to their father, the devil. If they belonged to Abraham, they would love him and hear what God says.

b) Because they did not belong to God, so they could not hear what God says. Instead, they belong to the devil so they hear his words and obey him.

c) Many ways. Prayer, consult the Bible, examine the character of the words. For example, are you being asked to commit a sin? Jesus would never say that. What does your gut tell you? Abiding/living like Jesus will help you know the Truth.

Jesus is addressing those who believe in him, but have not yet fully committed to following him.

People must live by Jesus’ word to believe in him. When we abide in Jesus’ word and live it, we’ll know the truth. When we know the truth, we are free.

There is no escape from slavery to sin except through Jesus Christ. You can live a life of sin or a life of freedom. But, it’s for life.

Abraham is not their father in a spiritual sense. Their rejection of Jesus shows they don’t have the word or Christ in their lives; thus, they did not have freedom.

Jesus’ actions are consistent with God. The actions of unbelievers are consistent with the devil.

The religious leaders again bring up Jesus’ shady parentage  John 8:19

If you love God, you love Jesus. Period.

Jesus came from God and is different from God.

Unbelievers are of the devil. The devil only speaks lies. Your actions prove this to be so.

We must repent of our sins and turn from our old ways in order to follow Jesus’ teachings.

Only the Holy Spirit can give us the power to live as God intended.

Reflection Questions for Matthew 7:12

15) Gosh, it was all good. I loved the reminder of Ask, Seek, Knock, and the reminder of putting others first above all else. I’d say humble self-examination. I will pray more to have a heart of God and for God and try to put others’ needs first. My family will be blessed and those around me.

16) My prayers are better I think about thanking God for everything in my life. I do need to pray more to be more like Jesus and do God’s will.

There are so many nuggets here to take away.  Praying faithfully to God, putting others first, watching out for false prophets, Jesus as the only way to eternal life, and God as our foundation. Summer Bible Study: Sermon on the Mount: Week 4, Day 5: Matthew 7:21-29

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 7:21-29

Only those who do the will of the Father will get into heaven. Basically, those who aren’t hypocrites and truly have a heart for God.

Those who follow God’s law and Jesus’s teaching will have a firm foundation like someone who built his house on a rock. Those who don’t are like the foolish man who built his house on sand, so the house eventually fell under the strain.

The crowds were amazing as Jesus’s authoritative teachings.

Questions for Matthew 7:21-29

12) Those who have a true heart for God enter the kingdom of heaven. Others don’t. We need Jesus and through Him, we find life. Lord, give me your heart, so I can live your way and follow your path and not my own. Let me find you everywhere I go and in all things and share that love for you with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

13) The rock is rooted. It does not move. It supports the house and everything in it. Our rock is Jesus. His work is our salvation, which is the foundation of our lives. Isaiah 28:6 tells us that Jesus is the cornerstone. 1 Corinthians 3:11 tells us that Jesus is our foundation. Builders build by submitted to Christ as our Savior and living by faith, doing God’s will, and following His ways.

14) God’s truth holds us firmly in place. We are not subjected to the whims of the wind. Those who do not have Jesus build on sand that moves and crumbles. Sand is not solid. I stand solid with God. Jesus is my rock and Savior. I want to strengthen that more and share that with others.

If your heart is on Jesus, you are saved. If you are only going through the pretenses of being with Christ, you are not saved. Period.

The wise come to Jesus and have a solid foundation of faith. The foolish do not follow Christ and live on shaky ground.

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 7:13-20

The road to life has a small gate and is narrow and only a few find it. The road to destruction is wide and broad and many enter.

Watch out for false prophets whom you will know by the fruit they bear. They will bear bad fruit and can only bear bad fruit. Good trees bear good fruit, and bad ones bear bad. Bad trees are cut down and thrown into the fire.

Questions for Matthew 7:13-20

9) That the path to life (heaven) is only through him and not many will find this path. John 14:6 says he is the only way to God. He is the way, the truth, the life. Acts 4:12 says salvation is found only in Jesus. Many people don’t like the rules God places on them to find Him and Life. They want to do things their way. In the end, they pay the ultimate price for this thinking. They want to be in charge and set the rules. I’m on God’s Road!

10) They bear bad fruit. Their actions reveal who they really are. John 15:16 says God chooses those to be with Him to bear lasting fruit. Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruit of the Spirit as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. I like to think I do my due diligence, and if someone says something that does not make sense to me, I try to find the truth.

11) Judging is quite different from questioning. We should always question what we hear if it doesn’t make sense, even if it’s from someone claiming to be of God. We can trust God’s Word, the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and prayer to help us discern false prophets, while not judging others.

If you are strong in faith and prayer and know God’s Word, it’s hard for others to lead you astray. As we study the Bible, we should remember that knowing God and His teachings is like putting on armor; we are shielded from evil-doers. We must not fall prey to what the world says. God and Jesus are our guiding lights.

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 7:7-12

“Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you.” If you ask God, He will give you good gifts like we would our kids.

Do unto others what you want done to you. This is the Law.

Questions for Matthew 7:7-12

6) That they are extremely simple: ask, seek, knock. That if you do these simple things, God will give it to you. I’m praying for lots of things. I want to move from where I am living. My husband is currently searching for a new career path he enjoys. I’m praying for the health of all my family members.

7) God provides for us. God loves us. God provides all that we need. We only need to ask, seek, and knock at His door. God gave us His only Son. We are to give Him our hearts.

8 ) It would look wonderfully. We are to put others first. This shows our obedience to Him. When we put others first, we naturally grow with God.

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 7:1-6

Jesus is still speaking his sermon on the mount. Do not judge others, and you won’t be judged. Quit being a hypocrite and judging others for it. Do not give your valuables to others who may trample them and tear you to pieces.

Questions for Matthew 7:1-6

3) Just that — Don’t judge others and think you are better than them when you are not. Discernment by definition is “the ability to judge well” or in Biblical thinking “perception in the absence of judgment with a view to obtaining spiritual guidance and understanding.” God helps you arrive at the best decision. We aim to know what God’s will is. Romans 12:2 says that discernment is knowing the right thing to do and doing it. You will be able to know God’s will and be able to do it, too. Philippians 1:9-10 says discernment is knowing what is best in order to do good and avoid sin. Hebrews 5:14 says God blesses wise discernment.

4) You must be merciful because you yourself have faults, too, and are in need of mercy. James 2:12-13 reminds us to speak and act as though you will be judged. We have received mercy from God; therefore, we are to show others mercy as well.

5) I judge others when I think they are not doing the right thing or acting the right way. I need to show mercy to others and kindness and not condemn them for their faults. I’d have better relationships and be less stressed and irritated overall. We should seek restoration instead.

Conclusions to Sermon on the Mount Matthew 7:1-6

“Do not judge” means “do not condemn.” Sinners should be held accountable for their actions, but shown love, support, and forgiveness from us.

The closer we are to God, the better our relationships are. Look for others to share the Gospel with. See others with God’s eyes.

1) It reveals the goodness of God for giving us His word and His ways to floow. Humans have free will, so some will follow God’s teachings and ways and others will not. That is human nature. It takes faith in God to put into practice His laws for us so that we can stand strong against evil.

2) I hope they reveal my faith to stand firm in God’s ways and in His strength to weather the storms, trials, and tribulations of life.

Great life lessons and prayer model! So often, we rush into prayer and immediately bombard God with what we want and needs. He knows all of that, so we need to slow down, thank Him first, pray for others and His kingdom, and give all of our worries to Him. Strive for this each and every day!

Summer Bible Study: Sermon on the Mount: Week 3, Day 5: Matthew 6:25-34

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 6:25-34

Do not worry about life, food, your body, and clothes. God takes care of the birds, and you are more valuable to God than them. Will worrying add an hour to your life? (In fact, all it does is take away an hour or more from your life).

Don’t worry about your clothes. The lilies of the field are more splendid than Solomon’s clothes ever were. If God clothes the lilies as such, won’t he clothe you, too?

Do not worry about your basic needs; God knows you need them. If you seek God’s kingdom and righteousness, all things will be given to you. Thus, don’t worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself. Focus on the day at hand.

Questions for Matthew 6:25-34

12) The birds, the flowers, the grass. He takes care of all of these creatures, and mankind is greater, so He takes care of us.

13) Good question. I don’t worry a whole lot. I’ve learned over the years to turn it over to Him. I guess right now it would be worrying over my family.

14) When you seek God, He will provide everything you need. Do not worry for God is in control. He’s provided the Bible, other Christians, this forum for community, financial stability, a good job, a good home, everything.

Conclusions to Sermon on the Mount Matthew 6:25-34

I love how worry is a sin! I’ve never thought of it this way! Because when you worry, you fail to have faith that God will provide and that He will do what He says He will do, which is provide for us.

Worry does not add time to your life; it takes away. Think of the amount of time you worry about things.

When you find yourself worrying, meditate on God, His Word, and Creation. Know He has you right where He wants you!

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 6:19-24

Don’t store up treasures on earth that will eventually disappear. Instead, store up treasures in heaven where nothing can destroy or steal them. Your heart is where your treasure is.

Your eyes are the light of your body. If you have good eyes, you’ll be full of light. If your eyes are bad, you’ll be full of darkness.

You cannot serve two masters. You cannot serve both God and money.

Questions for Matthew 6:19-24

9) Anything really — material possessions, health, wealth, family, animals, etc. Heavenly treasures — Helping others, doing God’s will, Jesus’ salvation, following the Holy Spirit in my life, etc.

10) God and money. Lord, I choose to serve you instead of money and be devoted to you. Please help me to do so always. Amen.

11) It reveals that my eyes are focused on God and I am motivated to do His will. My heart should desire Him. I would like to have my eyes on Him always and forever and not be tempted to fall away and to fall away.

Our eye should always be on Jesus, God, and His ways. Every time we say “yes” to God, we earn a token in heaven.

Money here is the world’s treasures and what the world values, so not necessarily money per se.

God is the only treasure worth possessing. He provides all that we need. We don’t need more.
