Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Philippians: Joy in Christ: Week 1, Day 4: Philippians 2:3

Summary of Philippians 2:3

Paul calls for humility as the key to enjoying unity.

Questions for Philippians 2:3

9) Selfish ambition or vain conceit, as well as valuing others above yourself. Selfish ambition is a drive for personal success that is only motivated by personal gain, recognition, and self-interest, and it often hurts others and breaks rules and values. Vain conceit is where you believe you are the best, you are more important than others, and you do it all. It’s a type of pride, which is valuing others above yourself.

10) Most relationships suffer because of selfishness. I personally would like to be less selfish and more giving.

11) Humility is being humble, putting others first, and not thinking you are the best. You recognize your limitations, and you value others. Humility is what Christ possessed, and if we are to be like-minded with Christ, we are to do what he did. Also, being humble is just plain healthier for your health and the health of your relationships. Humility is hard to be because you have to fight your inner and fallen nature that says that you do it all, you rely on no one (including God), and you’re the best. It’s hard not to do what you want to do and to do what others want to do.

Conclusions to WordGo Philippians: Joy in Christ, Philippians 2:2

Vanity is empty, so if vanity is involved, it’s pointless.

When we put others above ourselves, we show and reflect Christ.

We can do this since with Christ, all things are possible. Use God’s strength when facing our sinful nature.

By being humble, we take Christ with us wherever we go!

Summary of Philippians 2:1

Paul appeals to the benefits of Christian unity.

Questions for Philippians 2:1

3) They are encouraged in Christ, comforted by His love, sharing in the Spirit, tenderness and compassion.  Those who function without Christ rely on themselves, others, material objects, false gods, and more for their needs and happiness, rather, than God.

4) It is difficult to practice unity in Christ because we are fallen human, selfish and prideful and out for ourselves. We are not humble or self-sacrificing. Our unity with Christ is worth fighting for because it brings us closer to Christ. We become more Christ-like and able to do His purpose in our lives when we do so.

5) Yes. It is difficult to follow Christ and not to be selfish and let sin take over. And, I am not perfect, and I fail often. Still, I try and I feel like more often than not, I do succeed. I believe this all I can do on this side of heaven.

Passage Philippians 1:27b-28a

Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you.

Questions for Philippians 1:27b-28a

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Philippians: Confident in Christ: Week 2, Day 4: Philippians 1:19-26

Summary of Philippians 1:19-26

Paul is confident that, whether he lives or dies, Christ is glorified.

Questions for Philippians 1:19-26

9) Paul expects to be delivered from his imprisonment, and Christ will be exalted in his body, whether he lives or dies.

10) Paul would love to die so that he can be with Christ, but he knows it is better if he goes on living in order to further the Word of God and help his fellow Philippians. Paul concludes he will be freed and will remain with his comrades so that they may boast in Jesus because of his help.

11) I love his internal debate since we all have these over many things in our lives. I really don’t fear death. I, like Paul, believe I have not accomplished God’s mission yet for my life here on Earth, and when I die, it will be accomplished. And, I know heaven awaits me with open arms! Internal debate can be quite productive in these matters, and external debate, too. You gain a new perspective!

Conclusions to WordGo Philippians: Confident in Christ, Philippians 1:19-26

It’s great to see Paul seeing his circumstances as for his good, which is how we need to view our lives, too.

To live or die is good. Either way, we are His!

He desires to preach to others over being with Jesus — putting others’ needs first.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Philippians: Confident in Christ: Week 2, Day 3: Philippians 1:14-18

Summary of Philippians 1:14-18

Paul rejoices that Christ is preached regardless of human motives.

Questions for Philippians 1:14-18

6) His fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Some preach out of envy and rivalry for selfish reasons and ambition and not sincerely, hoping to make trouble for Paul while he is in chains, but some preach out of goodwill and love. Yet, all that matters is that Christ is preached!

7) Paul only cares that Christ is preached. He rejoices in this! He is able to respond in this way because all that matters is Christ, not his personal feelings or emotions.

8 ) I should just be glad they are Christ-like and rejoice rather than judge or look down upon them. God loves everyone unconditionally, and He forgives them and offers them all grace. We should do the same.

Conclusions to WordGo Philippians: Confident in Christ, Philippians 1:14-18

Christ being the center is all that matters to Paul. God is using Paul, albeit not how he himself wants, but how God wants.

We should look for the good around us and the good in others and trust God to do His will no matter what.

The gospel is unstoppable!

Paul marvels at how his chains have served to spread the gospel.

Questions for Philippians 1:12-13

3) Paul is in prison and in chains. This imprisonment has actually served to advance the gospel.

4) God works through Paul’s imprisonment as others see the example he sets while in prison. In spite of would be God working besides what is happening to Paul, rather than because of. God loves to work through us no matter our circumstances. He loves us unconditionally and will put us through things to grow our relationship to Christ and to help others come to Christ and grow to Christ.

5) It would mean putting Him first and doing everything for Him. It would mean more prayer, more thanksgiving, more everything for Him.

Conclusions to WordGo Philippians: Confident in Christ, Philippians 1:12-13

News of the gospel has advanced due to Paul’s imprisonment. Paul is able to preach to the Roman guards and the emperor’s household. He is blooming where he is chained!

God is in control. Grab on to that and never let go! Let others know about the power of Christ!
