Passage Philippians 1:27b-28a

Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you.

Summary of Philippians 1:27-30

Paul calls the Philippians to a gospel-worthy life of courage.

12) “Conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” The Philippians are to stand firm in Christ and not be afraid of their enemies. They will also suffer as Christ has suffered.

13) To believe in Christ and to suffer for Christ. As Jesus suffered for us, so we will suffer for him.

14) The gospel is life itself; it’s truly the only reason we do live. God gives us grace, salvation in Christ, mercy, forgiveness, and righteousness in the gospel.

I need to always put God first in my life and root out my selfish tendencies, jealousies, and other un-Godly actions.

Summary of Philippians 1:19-26

Paul is confident that, whether he lives or dies, Christ is glorified.

9) Paul expects to be delivered from his imprisonment, and Christ will be exalted in his body, whether he lives or dies.

10) Paul would love to die so that he can be with Christ, but he knows it is better if he goes on living in order to further the Word of God and help his fellow Philippians. Paul concludes he will be freed and will remain with his comrades so that they may boast in Jesus because of his help.

11) I love his internal debate since we all have these over many things in our lives. I really don’t fear death. I, like Paul, believe I have not accomplished God’s mission yet for my life here on Earth, and when I die, it will be accomplished. And, I know heaven awaits me with open arms! Internal debate can be quite productive in these matters, and external debate, too. You gain a new perspective!

It’s great to see Paul seeing his circumstances as for his good, which is how we need to view our lives, too.

Summary of Philippians 1:14-18

Paul rejoices that Christ is preached regardless of human motives.

6) His fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Some preach out of envy and rivalry for selfish reasons and ambition and not sincerely, hoping to make trouble for Paul while he is in chains, but some preach out of goodwill and love. Yet, all that matters is that Christ is preached!

7) Paul only cares that Christ is preached. He rejoices in this! He is able to respond in this way because all that matters is Christ, not his personal feelings or emotions.

8 ) I should just be glad they are Christ-like and rejoice rather than judge or look down upon them. God loves everyone unconditionally, and He forgives them and offers them all grace. We should do the same.

Christ being the center is all that matters to Paul. God is using Paul, albeit not how he himself wants, but how God wants.

Paul marvels at how his chains have served to spread the gospel.

3) Paul is in prison and in chains. This imprisonment has actually served to advance the gospel.

4) God works through Paul’s imprisonment as others see the example he sets while in prison. In spite of would be God working besides what is happening to Paul, rather than because of. God loves to work through us no matter our circumstances. He loves us unconditionally and will put us through things to grow our relationship to Christ and to help others come to Christ and grow to Christ.

5) It would mean putting Him first and doing everything for Him. It would mean more prayer, more thanksgiving, more everything for Him.

He tells the Philippians to conduct themselves in a manner worthy of the gospel.

1 ) Paul is imprisoned in chains guarded by the palace guards. He repeatedly says he is in chains.

2) I’m just trying to figure out God’s will for my life. I truly don’t think it has caused me to doubt God’s plans for me. On the contrary, it has encouraged me to grow closer to God so that I may better hear Him and his will for my life.

12) Paul prays for the Philippians’ love to abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight  so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ. He prays that they are filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ. All of this for God’s glory and praise. God is the only one who can grow us past our sins. He is praying that God will do all of this for and in them.

13) I love that Paul prays for us to grow in knowledge and insight. So many of us struggle with what the Bible is trying to tell us. I pray that we all grow in His Word, knowledge, and insight into who He is and His will for our lives.

14) I feel that I am growing more with God so that I can be used for His kingdom. I thank you, Lord, for this growth, for your guidance, and for your holiness as I strive to be more like Jesus in my daily life.

9) Paul has the Philippians in his heart (he loves them), and all of them share in God’s grace with him.

10) We all have the Holy Spirit inside of us. This is a gift from Christ and a source of power for us. We are justified by faith. We are sanctified by Christ as we grow more like him every day. Grace alone allows us to love one another. Otherwise, our sinful nature would always have an ulterior motive. Grace is our model for love. It transforms the human heart. And, it allows us to love in difficult circumstances.

11) Most likely. Sometimes, it’s hard enough just to work on my spiritual growth, let alone others’. With love and grace, we can help others, too!

6) That God will complete His work in the Philippians. He bases this certainty on the character of Christ.

7) God begins His good work in a person at the moment they accept Jesus into their hearts as Lord and Savior. God continues this work by giving us His purposes for our lives.

8 ) Yes. I’d say He’s been prompting me more to do His work and to help others more, rather than be selfish.

God works in us so that we can complete the work He gives us to do. God uses the Holy Spirit within us to produce a responding faith.

God does it all; we do nothing. We cannot overcome sin without God’s grace.
