Summer Bible Study: Sermon on the Mount: Week 1, Day 2: Matthew 5:1-4

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 5:1-4

Jesus begins his Sermon on the Mount. Jesus teaches that the poor are blessed as they have the kingdom of heaven. Those who mourn will be comforted.

Questions for Matthew 5:1-4

3) To be blessed is when God endows/gives someone something that is usually cherished, such as blessed with humility, finances, free will, etc. The Beatitudes specifically focus on spiritual blessings that come from knowing Jesus. I love how those who are poor in spirit, be it spiritually or just depressed in life are blessed and those who mourn will be comforted. No one wants to be low in spirit or in mourning, but they are part of life, and with Jesus, blessings come from them.

4) We all go through down times in our walk with God. Still, we mourn our sin, and with God’s help, we are forgiven and move past our sins into His light. By praying, we can gain a richer spirit and sin less. We will also get to know God more.

5) We need to recognize God’s holiness and our imperfect state that needs a Savior in order to be right with God. These verses cause me to want to know God and Jesus more, to draw closer to Him, to recognize Him more as my Maker, Creator, and Omnipotent God.

Conclusions to WordGo Sermon on the Mount Matthew 5:1-4

Summer Bible Study: Sermon on the Mount: Week 1, Day 1: Matthew 5:1-16

Summary of Matthew 5:1-16

Jesus teaches that the poor are blessed as they have the kingdom of heaven. Those who mourn will be comforted. The meek will inherit the earth. Those who search for righteousness will be blessed. The merciful will be shown mercy.

Those pure in heart will see God. The peacemakers will be called the sons of God. The persecuted will have the kingdom of heaven. You are blessed when you are insulted. Your reward in heaven will be great. The prophets were persecuted, too.

Jesus calls believers the salt of the earth, but we must maintain our salt or we will be lost.

Jesus calls believers the light of the world, and like a city on the hill, your light cannot be hidden. Let your light shine as a testament to God so that others may come to know him.

Questions for Matthew 5:1-16

1) Jesus cared about the people and their needs. He sat down to teach them what they needed to know. He puts others first. He is humble. He will gladly sacrifice for others.

2) The crowds and the disciples. I’d be amongst the crowds, eager to hear the word of God!

When you know Jesus, you know what to do. You can and do influence those around you by reflecting Jesus’ light. This is true even when you don’t see it.

We are able to think and life differently than others due to the power of Christ. Our priorities change from the inside.
