Important Symbols in Revelation

The Number 7: The most repeated number in the book of Revelation, it represents wholeness and completion. John wrote to 7 churches. You’ll see 7 lampstands, 7 angels, and 7 stars, representing these churches. You’ll meet a lamb with 7 horns and 7 eyes that open the 7 seals of God’s scroll. Then, there will be 7 scenes with 7 trumpets and 7 bowls of wrath paralleling the 7 scrolls. God’s people will receive 7 blessings in this magnificent book.

Horn: Symbolizes a king or kingdom. They also represent power and strength.

Dragon: A depiction of Satan or enemies of Israel

Clouds: God’s presence and glory. Also, how Jesus will return to earth.

Fire: Judgment, purification

Stars: Ruling authority

White: Color of triumph and purity and righteousness

7 Lamps: Holy Spirit

God’s Throne Room: God’s power and rule

Thunder, Wind, & Lightning: God’s judgment

Eyes: Knowledge and wisdom

Lamb: God’s redemptive plan

Incense smoke: Carried the people’s prayers to God

Vines & Fig Trees: Prosperity

Sackcloth: Clothing of mourning and repentance

Scales: Scarcity

White robes: salvation, God’s righteousness

Earthquakes: God’s presence and judgment

Palm branches: Victory

Number 144,000: Completeness. A multiple of 12. Also represents Israel’s tribes and those marked with the Lamb or God’s name.

Trumpets: Announced a war or called God’s people together. They also announce God’s impending judgment.

Women: Religion in the Book of Revelation

Number 12: The 12 Tribes of Israel or the 12 Apostles. It also is a number of completeness and wholeness

Firstfruits: Hope of the harvest and a praise offering to God

Hail: judgment against mankind

Bowls: images of judgment

Clothing: character, God’s gift of a transformed life

Scarlet and Crimson: Sin

Babylon: Rebellion against God

Waters: people or armies. Waters and living waters symbolize blessings from God’s presence

Wilderness or Desert: a place of testing and evil

Mountain: the place God makes Himself known

Washed robes: experiencing God’s grace through forgiveness of sin

Dogs: those who shut God out of their lives and reject His righteousness
