SUMMARY OF JAMES 2:1-13:
James warns against showing favoritism, which is discrimination and the judgement of others. James says that God has chosen the poor to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom He has promised to those who love him. The rich are exploiting you by slandering Jesus’s name and dragging you into court.
Instead, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Showing favoritism is a sin, even if you keep the rest of the laws. You break God’s law when you break just one of His laws. Speak and act as if you will be judged. Judgement without mercy will be shown to those who are not merciful to others.
QUESTIONS FOR JAMES 2:1-13:
7) Because it is discrimination and the judgement of others. Many people favor those they like personally, those they connect with, those who look good and do good in their eyes, etc. It’s a part of human nature to judge by appearances, and it’s a fight we all must engage in on a daily basis.
8 ) If you love your neighbor, you will be prevented from showing favoritism.
Mark 12:31: The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Matthew 22:36-40: “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
9) God shows mercy to me every day when I’m blessed to wake up and go to bed each night without doing too much damage to others. He has given me a blessed life and continues to guide my family as we move forward.

Powerful lesson about showing favoritism. We all do it, sometimes without even thinking. As parents, we do this with out kids, too. It’s important to love everyone equally and to treat everyone the same.
