Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of James: Week 2, Day 6: James 3:9-10

PASSAGE IN JAMES

“With the tongues we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. Our of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.”

James 3:9-10

REFLECTION QUESTIONS FOR JAMES 3-5

15) Lord, I pray I listen more, am slow to anger, and that my deeds will show my faith. I pray to speak uplifting words and not words that can tear down. I pray to have more patience in the waiting. I think I’d be less stressed, more calm, and a better person overall.

16) God is good. God is faithful. God is there. God listens. God does.

CONCLUSIONS TO WEEK 2 OF WORDGO’S STUDY OF JAMES

This was a short study, but a good one. I actually kind of like how short it was. It gives me a sense of accomplishment right off the bat.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of James: Week 2, Day 5: James 3-5:

REFLECTION QUESTIONS FOR JAMES 3-5:

13) Live your faith out in prayer.

14) God is good, and He has a plan. We need to submit and let God guide our lives. We need to live each day out according to God’s plan. Be patient.

CONCLUSIONS TO WEEK 2 OF WORDGO’S STUDY OF JAMES

I have no new insights better than James. The book of James is snippets of life advice we should all apply about how to live the Christian faith. There are 54 direct commands from James, as he gets right to the point.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of James: Week 2, Day 4: James 5:

SUMMARY OF JAMES 5:

James warns the rich that their wealth has rotted and the moths have eaten their clothes. Their gold and silver are corroded. They have lived on earth in luxury and indulgence and condemned and murdered innocent men.

He tells believers to be patient and stand firm for the Lord is coming. Don’t grumble against each other. Be patient like the prophets. Job persevered. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. Don’t swear.

Pray for healing for prayer is powerful. Elijah prayed and the Lord answered. Save those who have wandered.

QUESTIONS FOR JAMES 5:

10) Too many ways to name. Those who are wealthy have power, and they do evil sometimes rather than good.

11) I love his example of Job who had the ultimate faith and perseverance. When I get down, remembering Job and all he suffered makes my sufferings inconsequential.

12) I love the prayer offered in faith and when you are in trouble or sick. God doesn’t answer if you don’t ask.

CONCLUSIONS TO WORDGO JAMES 5

Lots of good nuggets and reminders here about how to live. Patience is one of those. Prayer is the other. Remembering those who came before us can give us perspective when we need it the most.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of James: Week 2, Day 3: James 4:13-17:

SUMMARY OF JAMES 4:13-17:

James warns us against boasting about tomorrow since we could be dead tomorrow. Instead, let God lead you every day to His will. Do the good you know you should do, or you sin.

QUESTIONS FOR JAMES 4:13-17:

7) People boast about anything and everything, from their ability to do something others can’t to the car they drive. They even boast about their special kids or pets.

8 ) The key is giving God the credit for everything we do and listening to His will for our lives. Planning is good and wise, but, as we all know, things don’t always go as planned, and that’s ok.

9) Keep in mind to do good always and for others. That’s all you can do really.

CONCLUSIONS TO WORDGO JAMES 4:13-17

Every talent, gift, and material possession is from God. Believers get in trouble when they forget that and think it’s all them. As long as you know how blessed you are to have the things you do and to do the things you can do, that is all God asks. Acknowledge Him in all things.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of James: Week 2, Day 2: James 4:1-12:

SUMMARY OF JAMES 4:1-12:

Fights and quarrels come from the desires and battles within you. You kill and covet because you can’t have the things you want. You must ask God with the right heart to receive.

God’s people are separate and must not be friends with the world or they will be an enemy of God’s. Submit to God, flee from the devil, come near to God and He will you, and purify your hearts.

Humble yourself, and God will lift you up. Do not slander or judge your neighbor. There’s only one Lawgiver and Judge who can save and destroy.

QUESTIONS FOR JAMES 4:1-12:

4) Your desires for things you cannot have. To ask God for the things you want but ask with the right heart and motives. Plus, they have to be things to be used for the right motives.

5) I’m sure all at some point or another. It’s a constant battle against selfishness, and when you have two or more people fighting against one another who are inherently selfish, it’s bound to turn into a battle of wills.

6) It’s always best to be humble and assume the best in others, rather than try to be right all the time. Let God be in control, and quit fighting Him.

CONCLUSIONS TO WORDGO JAMES 4:1-12:

Great lesson on how we always want it our way when it’s God’s way that is best. Learning to let Him take the lead is one of the most important things in life. Humility and submission are great to practice over and over again.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of James: Week 2, Day 1: James 3

SUMMARY OF JAMES 3:

Those who teach hold more responsbility than those that don’t. They will be judged more strictly. Although the tongue is small, it can do great damage like a spark to a forest fire. The tongue has lots of control like a bit in a horse’s mouth. No man can tame the tongue. We all say things we don’t mean. We praise God and then curse our brothers. This should not be.

You show wisdom by your good deeds. Envy and selfishness are of the devil. Heaven’s wisdom is pure, peace-loving, submissive, merciful, impartial, and sincere. Peacemakers sow righteousness.

QUESTIONS FOR JAMES 3:

  1. Our speech reveals our hearts. It shows if we have God or not.

2) The closer I am to God, the more uplifting words come out of my mouth. When I’m mad, not so helpful words come forth. The closer I am to Him, the better I speak.

3) I always seek to be a better parent and more positive in my interactions with others, rather than negative. That does no one any good. By doing God’s will for my life rather than my own, I hope to find wisdom

CONCLUSIONS TO WORDGO JAMES 3:

Good passage. Like our walk with God, we always have to be cognizant of our tongue or we can slip and say something we don’t mean or is hurtful. It’s a constant battle, just like the battle against sin. By listening more as James told us to do in James 1:19, our speech will be better, too.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of James: Week 1, Day 6: James 2:26

Passage in James:

“As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.”

James 2:26

REFLECTION QUESTIONS FOR JAMES 1-2:

15) This is a hard one. Just to be more like Jesus. Here, it’s to do good works, not just works. That’s hard for me.

16) Another tough one. I fear I’m no help today. You can either adopt the “poor is me” attitude, or you can keep moving forward. I prefer to keep moving forward. Just try to do more for those around me.

CONCLUSIONS TO WEEK 1 OF WORDGO’S STUDY OF JAMES

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of James: Week 1, Day 5: James 1-2:

REFLECTION QUESTIONS FOR JAMES 1-2:

13) Unsure about “already” changed my thoughts and actions as I believe change — especially Godly change — takes time. Powerful chapters about perseverence, listening to others, and not playing favorites, as well as showing your faith through deeds. Remembering these is the key for me, and I try to every day.

14) Not much. I have studied this passage before so I understand you must put your beliefs into actions. Of course, this is easier said than done, so I strive to do so a little bit more each day.

CONCLUSIONS TO WEEK 1 OF WORDGO’S STUDY OF JAMES

James seems like a very, very wise man whom I wish we had more of his writings. But what we do have are cherished nuggets to hold onto. That is my prayer for you all.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of James: Week 1, Day 4: James 2:14-26:

SUMMARY OF JAMES 2:14-26:

Faith requires deeds, or for you to live out the teachings of the Bible through your actions. It does not good to wish someone to be well fed if they have no food. Abraham’s faith was shown in his willingness to sacrifice his son, Isaac, when asked to by God. Abraham was credited as righteous.

Rahab was credited as righteous when she sent the spies away. Faith without deeds is dead.

QUESTIONS FOR JAMES 2:14-26:

10) Since Christians are held to a higher standard, we are called to help others. You show your faith through your actions. Great reminder to be looking for ways to show God’s love always.

11) You can believe that God is real, but if you don’t show you believe it, it’s pointless. True faith is living as if Jesus will come again. Intellectural faith is where you don’t quite believe this in your heart.

12) I personally like the example of the brother or sister without food. We are called to help those in need, and this is a perfect example of how to help.

CONCLUSIONS TO WORDGO JAMES 2:14-26:

This is a popular bible passage to study, and BSF has referred to it in many of their studies. Basically, live out your faith. Don’t just call yourself a Christian; show you have God’s heart for others.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of James: Week 1, Day 3: James 2:1-13:

SUMMARY OF JAMES 2:1-13:

James warns against showing favoritism, which is discrimination and the judgement of others. James says that God has chosen the poor to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom He has promised to those who love him. The rich are exploiting you by slandering Jesus’s name and dragging you into court.

Instead, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Showing favoritism is a sin, even if you keep the rest of the laws. You break God’s law when you break just one of His laws. Speak and act as if you will be judged. Judgement without mercy will be shown to those who are not merciful to others.

QUESTIONS FOR JAMES 2:1-13:

7) Because it is discrimination and the judgement of others. Many people favor those they like personally, those they connect with, those who look good and do good in their eyes, etc. It’s a part of human nature to judge by appearances, and it’s a fight we all must engage in on a daily basis.

8 ) If you love your neighbor, you will be prevented from showing favoritism.

Mark 12:31: The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Matthew 22:36-40: “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

9) God shows mercy to me every day when I’m blessed to wake up and go to bed each night without doing too much damage to others. He has given me a blessed life and continues to guide my family as we move forward.

CONCLUSIONS TO WORDGO GAMES 2:1-13:

Powerful lesson about showing favoritism. We all do it, sometimes without even thinking. As parents, we do this with out kids, too. It’s important to love everyone equally and to treat everyone the same.
