Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of Hebrews: Week 3, Day 2: Hebrews 9:1-10

SUMMARY OF HEBREWS 9:1-10

The first covenant had regulations for worship. A tabernacle was where worship took place. Here there was a lampstand, table, and consecrated bread in the Holy Place, or first room. Behind the second curtain was the Most Holy Place, where the golden altar of incence and the Ark of the Covenant was. The ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff, and the stone tablet of the covenant. Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory that overlooked the atonement cover.

The priests used the outer room but ony the high priest entered the inner room once a year for a sin offering. The way into the Most Holy Place had not been disclosed yet. All of the offerings offered, such as gifts, sacrifices, and ceremonial cleansings, were only external regulations until the new order arrived.

QUESTIONS FOR HEBREWS 9:1-10

4) All of the offerings offered, such as gifts, sacrifices, and ceremonial cleansings, were only external regulations until the new order arrived. These sacrifices only partially cleansed man of sin and only the high priest could enter.

5) God required a blood offering to be a symbol of the atonement of man for their sins. This was due to the fact that the life of the animal is in the blood. This was the only way to be forgiven for our sins before the coming of Christ and his final blood sacrifice for us.

6) Because the blood sacrifices were never enough to cleanse us to be able to stand before God. We had to have the perfect sacrifice, Jesus, to do so. Now, we don’t have to worry about being forgiven; Christ took care of that for us. We should never feel guilt after we’ve made atonement for those sins.

CONCLUSIONS TO WORDGO HEBREWS 9:1-10

I for one am super grateful I don’t have to slaughter animals to be near God. Great explanation of the imperfectness of the Old Covenant.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of Hebrews: Week 3, Day 1: Hebrews 8

SUMMARY OF HEBREWS 8

Jesus is our high priest who serves in the true tabernacle of our Lord. Every high priest offers gifts and sacrifices. Jesus’s ministry is superior to the high priests’ on earth and is founded on better promises.

There was something wrong with the first covenant (it wasn’t perfect) so a new one was needed unlike the Old Covenant. Instead of being in writing, the laws of God will lay in our hearts and our minds. God will be our God, and we will be his people. We will be all be able to know God. God will forgive our sins and not remember them. The first covenant is obsolete.

QUESTIONS FOR HEBREWS 8

1 ) A covenant is an agreement. In the secular world, it’s a contract between two parties, like ina marriage. Biblically speaking, the covenants where God is involved is his promises made to humanity. We see many covenants in the Bible that God makes with His people, from Noal to Jesus’s death and resurrection. They can be present in our lives anywhere, such as marriage or the promises we make to others. The other person expects you to uphold your word and do what you say you will do.

2) The laws of God will lay in our hearts and our minds. God will be our God, and we will be his people. We will be all be able to know God. God will forgive our sins and not remember them.

3 ) Without Jesus and God’s promises, there would be little hope in the world and in my life. There are a lot of people who need to hear God’s promises in my life.

CONCLUSIONS TO WORDGO HEBREWS 8

I love Hebrews 8:10 but switch the pronouns as if God were talking to me: “I will be your God, and you will be my people.” Magic. The Hebrews writer brings his teachings together nicely here by saying that Jesus ushers in a new covenant forever.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of Hebrews: Week 2, Day 6: Hebrews 4:14

PASSAGE IN HEBREWS:

“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.”

Hebrews 4:14

REFLECTION QUESTIONS FOR HEBREWS 4:14:

15) Being more grateful for the things I get to do in this world, for this life, for my family, and for Christ.

16) It’s just comforting overall that God is in control. My job’s role keeps changing, which has had me on edge. But knowing God has got this makes all the difference.

CONCLUSIONS TO WEEK 2 OF WORDGO’S STUDY OF HEBREWS

It’s hard to deny Jesus when reading the book of Hebrews. While complicated and at times irrelevant to our era, it’s a great place to send those who doubt.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of Hebrews: Week 2, Day 5: Hebrews 4:14-7

REFLECTION QUESTIONS FOR HEBREWS 4:14-7

13) God has everything perfectly planned from the beginning. Jesus has always been the plan, and we can take comfort in that, especially when events in the world happen that we don’t understand.

14) It matters because before Jesus the only way to God was via a priest. Since Jesus is the perfect and permanent priest, we can now have access to God directly.

CONCLUSIONS TO WORDGO HEBREWS 4:14-7

Admittedly, this passage was more relevant to first century Jews than to us. That being said, it still shows us the perfect plan of God and explains how Jesus is the final and only way to Him.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of Hebrews: Week 2, Day 4: Hebrews 7

SUMMARY OF HEBREWS 7:

Melchizedek was king of Salem (Jerusalem) and priest of the God Most High.  He met and blessed Abraham, and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything.  His name means “king of righteousness” and king of Salem means “king of peace.”  He remains a priest forever without the proper lineage.

Just think how great he must have been for Abraham to give him a tenth of the plunder!  The law requires the descendants of Levi to collect a tenth from the people.  Melchizedek was not a Levite. One could deduce that Levi collects the tenth through Abraham because Levi (who is Abraham’s descendant) hadn’t been born yet when Melchizedek collected.  Hence we have Levites paying tithes to Melchizedek, making Melchizedek greater than the Levites (or Abraham in this instance since the Levites are through Abraham).  Since the lesser is blessed by the greater, Melchizedek is greater than Abraham

Perfection could not be attained through the Levites so there was need for a priest in the order of Melchizedek (the mere fact that a priest in the order of Melchizedek shows up should be a clue that there is a need for something better than the Levites).  If the priests change, then so must the law. The old law was weak and useless for it made nothing perfect and a better hope was introduced by God (Jesus!).

Through an oath Jesus became a priest and the author of a better covenant.  Jesus lives forever so his priesthood is forever; therefore, he is able to save completely those who come to God through him.

Jesus meets our needs as holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens with one sacrifice of himself who has been made perfect forever.

QUESTIONS FOR HEBREWS 7:

10) Melchizedek and Christ’s similiarities:  1)  Both were kings  2)  Both were priests 3)  Both received a tenth of everything  4)  Both names mean king of peace  5)  Both are priests forever  6)  Both live forever (without beginning of days or end of life)

One difference: Only Jesus was the Son of God

11) Jesus lives forever so his priesthood is permanent. This is why he is able to save completely. He is the only one who is holy, blameless, and pure. He does not need to atone for his sins because he is sinless. He is perfect forever. His one sacrifice saves us all.

12) It means we are saved from our sins forever, we will got to heaven with Christ, and all of our sins are atoned for, now and in the future. It means we are free!

CONCLUSIONS TO WORDGO HEBREWS 7

I love Melchizedek. It seems he existed to prove the superiority of Christ over all the priests. Powerful argument to turn to Jesus.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of Hebrews: Week 2, Day 2: Hebrews 5:11-6:3

SUMMARY OF HEBREWS 5:11-6:3

The writer of Hebrews says that his audience is slow to learn and is like infants that need milk, not solid food. They are not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. He beseeches his listeners to move to the mature level of understanding God’s word and the foundation of Christ’s death.

QUESTIONS FOR HEBREWS 5:11-6:3

4 ) Repentance from sinful acts, faith in God, baptisms, laying of hands, resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgement. Repent is where you are truly sorry for your sins and aim to turn away from them. Faith in God that He is the Creator and the One True God. Baptism is where one publically proclaims they accept Jesus as their Savior. Laying on the hands is representing God’s word. Jesus resurrected to save us from our sins. If you believe in Jesus as your Savior, you’ll be free from eternal judgement.

5 ) Make decisions by praying first. Work to correct sinful behavior. Put God and His will first in their lives. Make God more of a priority in daily living and consult Him before doing your own thing.

6 ) Selfishness and busyness. My life is incredibly busy, so making the time to grow with God is challenging. Overcoming what I want to do and putting others’ first is hard as well.

CONCLUSIONS TO WORDGO HEBREWS 5:11-6:3

Great lesson on continually striving to grow deeper in God’s word and focus on becoming a mature Christian.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of Hebrews: Week 2, Day 1: Hebrews 4:14-5:10

SUMMARY OF HEBREWS 4:14-5:10:

Jesus is our high priest who can sympathize with us since he was temped but remained sinless. Jesus offers mercy and grace.

Jesus is our high priest in the order of Melchizedek who was called by God. He offered up prayers and petition for us. He was heard because of his submission. Jesus learned obedience from his suffering and is the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.

QUESTIONS FOR HEBREWS 4:14-5:10

  1. Jesus was tempted in every way and called by God. He was selected among men and is appointed to represent them in matters related to God, to offer gifts, and sacrifices for their sins. He can deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray since he is subject to weakness. He was perfect under temptation, is in heaven with God, and knows temptation himself. He is the way to eternal salvation.
  2. Jesus knows the tricks of the devil so he can help us get through them. I love how Jesus uses God’s words against the devil. Perfect for us.
  3. Jesus himself gained the right hand of God. He gained strength from God. He gained knowledge to help us when we are tempted. I just have to take refuge in God when times are tough.

CONCLUSIONS TO WORDGO HEBREWS 4:14-5:10

I love how Hebrews reflects on Jesus’s temptations and shows how it is only he who can save us from our sins.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of Hebrews: Week 1, Day 6: Hebrews 1:3

PASSAGE IN HEBREWS:

“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”

Hebrews 1:3

REFLECTION QUESTIONS FOR HEBREWS 1:3

15) Probably everything. Christians have a different worldview anyway once they have Christ in their hearts. However, when we think about Jesus as superior to all, it should make our worries insignificant and paltry to say the least.

16) Anytime I am in God’s word I am impacted. This summer Bible series is helping me to open my Bible more, pray more, and grow closer to God more.

CONCLUSIONS TO WEEK 1 OF WORDGO’S STUDY OF HEBREWS

There is something comforting knowing Jesus is at God’s right hand. Unsure how else to describe it.

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of Hebrews: Week 1, Day 5: Hebrews 1-4:13

REFLECTION QUESTIONS FOR HEBREWS 1-4:13:

13) Jesus came to free us from the fear of death and offer a direct pathway to God. Jesus fulfills all of the Old Testament prophecies. He is the only way to heaven.

14) You learn so much when you study God’s Word any time. The Bible is many books that point to God’s Son, and all throughout history, you can see God’s plans taking shape. It’s truly amazing!

CONCLUSIONS TO WEEK 1 OF WORDGO’S STUDY OF HEBREWS

Although the book of Hebrews can be hard to understand, it’s mission is to show the superiority of Jesus Christ, to show how he had to come as a human to save us from our sins, and to show how only he is the way to God. Great stuff!

Summer Bible Study: WordGo’s Study of Hebrews: Week 1, Day 4: Hebrews 4:1-13

SUMMARY OF HEBREWS 4:1-13:

If you believe, you will enter God’s rest. The Sabbath is a rest day for the people of God. It is God’s rest. When we enter that rest, we won’t fall. The Word of God is living and active, sharper than a double-edged sword. It judges the thoughts and attitude of the hear. Nothing is hidden from God.

QUESTIONS FOR HEBREWS 4:1-13:

10) The rest is God’s rest; it’s the rest God took after He finished creation and rested on the Sabbath. As believers, we can have this rest, too.

11) By believing in God’s son, Jesus. Because I have seen the Truth and accepted Jesus as my savior.

12) The word of God is living and active. You can trust that God is working in your life. His word is shaper than a double-edged sword. You can trust God is greater than sin or temptation. His word penetrates to our soul and judges the heart. You can trust that God’s word is life-changing. God sees all. You cannot hide from God.

CONCLUSIONS TO WORDGO HEBREWS 4:1-13

One of the most famous passages in the Bible that believers can hold onto. Most of the first part is about resting with God on the Sabbath as believers, and the passages quotes are for the early Jewish Christians. You can rest assured that God has got you when no one else does.
