BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 5: Revelation 12:13-17

Summary of Revelation 12:13-17

The dragon pursued the woman. The woman was given wings to escape the dragon. The dragon tried to sweep the woman away with a river, but the earth saved the woman. The dragon was enraged that he could not get to the woman, so he targeted believers instead.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 5: Revelation 12:13-17

13) The dragon pursued the woman who gave birth to the male child.  He waged war against the rest of her offspring or the believers who keep God’s commands and hold fast to their testimony about Jesus.

14a) God gave the woman wings to escape the dragon. He also allowed the earth to swallow up the river the dragon had sent against her. He waged war against the rest of her offspring or the believers who keep God’s commands and hold fast to their testimony about Jesus.

b) The belief in Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross to save all believers allows us to overcome Satan, sin, and death. God’s gift of Jesus brought us righteousness and justification before God forever, making Satan’s powers nothing to us. This means so much. I can live forever with Jesus in heaven. I can worship him now and forever, be forever grateful for this, and do my best to live out God’s calling on my life.

15) God provides all comfort. One day we will be rewarded in heaven for all that we do here on earth. We don’t have to fear death or sin. We are forgiven once and for all. This provides the ultimate comfort and peace to believers.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 5: Revelation 12:13-17

I love how no matter what the devil does, God always beats him. No matter what the devil hurls at us, we win. So great!

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 5: Revelation 12:13-17

Many say the woman represents Israel or the Jewish people in particular. Satan attacks the Jews because they are God’s chosen people and the people who brought forth Jesus. By attacking the Jews, Satan hopes to thwart God’s plan for all of humanity.

We see the wings of the Eagle in (Exodus 19:4)

The 3.5 year period is mentioned again here.

We see the fury of the devil here as mentioned by Jesus as the abomination of desolation Matthew 24:15-22, but God ultimately is in charge and protects His people.

When the dragon loses, he turns towards humanity. This, again, takes place during the time of the Tribulation.

Many people believe the devil knows our thoughts. However, there is no evidence of this, so we can assume that only God knows our every thought.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 4: Revelation 12:10-12

Summary of Revelation 12:10-12

Jesus now comes to rule after the accuser/dragon has been hurled down.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 4: Revelation 12:10-12

9) “Salvation, power, kingdom of God and authority of Jesus” has come. The accuser has been hurled out of heaven to earth.

10)

“They triumphed over him”: Believers beat the devil by the blood of Jesus.

“By the blood of the Lamb”: Jesus’ blood saved believers from God’s wrath.

“And by the word of their testimony”: By God’s word and testimony of what Christ did for us, we are saved and have life.

“They did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death”: Jesus gave up his life so that believers could gain life with Jesus.

11a) There was a war in heaven until Satan was hurled to earth. Those on earth must fight the devil who is attacking them, but those in heaven are free now. Note Satan’s time is limited to attack humanity.

b) That time is of the essence since no one knows when Jesus will return.

12) I know that I have the strength to defeat Satan with God’s strength in me. I have confidence that Satan will not win over my life. I worship God all the more for this!

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 4: Revelation 12:10-12

Such a picture! Satan being hurled out of heaven and all the saints rejoicing for Jesus’ victory!

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 4: Revelation 12:10-12

Note the voice is not God because of the words “our brethren” referring to humans.

The saints and believers overcame Satan in heaven because of:

  1. The blood of Jesus
  2. Testimony
  3. Our desire to give up our physical lives for our spiritual life with Jesus

If we don’t cling to our physical lives, Satan cannot harm us. We are God’s spiritually.

Satan’s time and influence on earth is limited. This should encourage every believer when they are under attack by the devil.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 3: Revelation 12:7-9

Summary of Revelation 12:7-9

Satan/red dragon and his angels were thrown out of heaven by Michael and his angels.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 3: Revelation 12:7-9

6) Michael and his angels fought the dragon and hurled them down to earth.

7) Satan only has power that God has granted him. Satan operates under God’s control. Satan’s power is limited by God. God rules over Satan.

8 ) I find comfort and courage knowing that God is always in control, that he won’t give me more than I can handle, that I can defeat Satan through the power of the blood of Christ, that I am stronger than Satan since I have the Holy Spirit within.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 3: Revelation 12:7-9

Love the emphasis here that Satan is not as strong as God, and God always wins. A great reminder that we can win, too.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 3: Revelation 12:7-9

Bible scholars believe this battle happens at the mid-point of the Great Tribulation, or the 7-year period as explained by Daniel (Daniel 12:1).

Bible scholars are unsure if this is a real battle or a spiritual one.

Note that Satan can enter heaven, but only at God’s allowance.

Note the many names that Satan is referred to as. This emphasizes his nature.

Fun Fact: Satan falls 4 times in the Bible. This is the 2nd fall.

Satan falls:

  1. From glory (Ezekiel 28:14-16)
  2. From heaven (here),
  3. To the pit/Abyss (Revelation 20).
  4. To the lake of fire (Revelation 20).

Demons/demonic spirits are really fallen angels, as stated here.

BSF Study Questions John’s Gospel: The Truth Lesson 16, Day 3: John 12:12-22

SUMMARY OF JOHN 12:12-22

Jesus enters Jerusalem as prophesied on the back of a donkey with the crowd waving palm branches. They shouted “Hosanna,” which means “Save.” Many came to greet him, especially those who were there when Lazarus was raised from the dead. This angered the Pharisees. Some Greeks wanted to see Jesus, too.

BSF Study Questions John’s Gospel: The Truth Lesson 16, Day 3: John 12:12-22

7a) Zechariah 9:9 predicted the king would come lowly riding on a donkey. Psalm 118:25-26 has the people shouting the same words for Jesus: “Lord, save us! Lord, grant us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you.”

b) They expected Jesus to save them, but from their oppressors, the Romans, not spiritually.

c) I have full faith in God and Jesus and fulfilled prophecy only strengthens my faith. It also adds to my understanding of Scripture, God, and His ways, so I can draw nearer to Him.

8 ) the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead. Other people who had heard about Jesus’ raising of Lazarus. The Pharisees were there, too. The Greeks. The crowds probably wanted Jesus to save them. The Pharisees were plotting his death. The Greeks probably wanted to learn more about Jesus and from Jesus.

9) He’s the center and the leader. It’s all about him.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions John’s Gospel: The Truth Lesson 16, Day 3: John 12:12-22

Love this scene of our Lord and Savior and how humble he is. It’s about the message of the Gospel here.

map of Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem www.atozmomm.com bsf john

There are many Jews gathered in Jerusalem for the Passover, as well as their required sacrificial lambs. Many were from Galilee.

Palm branches symbolized the Jewish people. The people saw him as their national savior.

They wanted Jesus to save them (Hosanna).

A donkey was an animal of peace, not a war animal like a horse.

Jesus had become insanely popular after the raising of Lazarus. Many believed now he is the promised Messiah.

Philip’s name is Greek, so they came to him asking to see Jesus so that they could learn more about him. We do not know if these Greeks were converts or not. However, the Greeks represented the entire Gentile world.

BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 16, Day 4: Matthew 15:21-28

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 15:21-28

Jesus now traveled to Tyre and Sidon. A Canaanite woman came to ask Jesus to help her daughter who was possessed by a demon. At first, Jesus did not answer. Apparently, the woman kept begging, prompting the disciples to ask Jesus to send her away. Jesus said he was sent to help only Israelites. The woman kept begging and showed great faith, so Jesus healed her daughter.

BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 16, Day 4: Matthew 15:21-28

9a) Because they would be preaching to the Gentiles after he died.

b) “Lord, Son of David.” This shows she understands who Jesus really is — the son of God.

10a) A Canaanite woman came to ask Jesus to help her daughter who was possessed by a demon. At first, Jesus did not answer. Apparently, the woman kept begging, prompting the disciples to ask Jesus to send her away. Jesus said he was sent to help only Israelites. The woman kept begging and showed great faith, so Jesus healed her daughter.

b) He was testing her faith and that of the disciples

11a) She never gives up hope in Jesus to heal her daughter. She realizes who Jesus is and humbles herself. She never loses faith or hope in Jesus.

b) The same. To never give up. To keep praying. And to not lose faith or hope in Jesus.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 16, Day 4: Matthew 15:21-28

I love when Jesus helps those who are persistent. I’m very persistent myself.

Great read for all!

Tyre and Sidon were located on the Mediterranean Sea about 20 miles apart from each other. They were about 50 miles travel distance from where Jesus was in Galilee. These were Gentile cities, so why would Jesus go there? To help this woman.

She came as an intercessor for her daughter. This gives us hope when we pray for others, too.

Jesus healed other Gentiles  (Matthew 4:24-258:5-13) but always before in Jewish territory. Here, he is in Gentile territory.

The woman irritated the disciples, so they asked Jesus to heal her so she’d leave.

Jesus clearly states he is here for the Jews.

The woman did not back down. She continued asking for healing for her daughter.

Jesus called the woman a “little dog,” which was a traditional slur towards Gentiles. Household dogs were entitled to a portion.

The woman did not argue; she knew she was low. Instead, she continued to ask for Jesus’s help and blessing.

All she asks for is the crumbs — which his all any of us are worthy of.

Fun Fact: This is the only time Jesus tells someone their faith is great.

This is the only story recorded of Jesus’s ministry in Tyre and Sidon. It appears Jesus traveled all this way just to meet her. How awesome is that!

This woman had a need, and she never gave up. She knew who Jesus was and she kept pursuing him.

BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 16, Day 3: Matthew 15:10-20

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 15:10-20

Jesus teaches the crowds that food does not make him unclean, but words that come out do. The disciples ask Jesus if he knew that he offended the Pharisees. Jesus says the Pharisees are blind, and the blind leading the blind will fall into a pit. Peter asks Jesus to explain the parable, and Jesus asks them why they are so dull. He says that the things that come out of the mouth are from the heart, which determines if he is unclean. The heart harbors evil thoughts, and unwashed hands don’t make him unclean.

BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 16, Day 3: Matthew 15:10-20

6) Words are what make a man unclean, not washing his hands, because it shows his heart.

7a) About offending the Pharisees

b)  Jesus says the Pharisees are blind, and the blind leading the blind will fall into a pit. He is unconcerned about them.

8a) He says that the things that come out of the mouth are from the heart, which determines if he is unclean. The heart harbors evil thoughts, and unwashed hands don’t make him unclean.

b) Showing up to church, participating in charity activities, doing Godly things for others, praying in public, etc.

c) Your words matter, and it shows your heart. God only cares about your heart, not what you look like or do on the outside.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 16, Day 3: Matthew 15:10-20

Great lesson about how God wants your heart, not your rituals.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 16, Day 3: Matthew 15:10-20

Jesus did have the advantage knowing that all food would be considered clean for eating in the New Covenant. The Jewish people have lived for centuries under the Old Testament that had strict laws about food being clean.

The disciples are concerned that Jesus offended the Pharisees; Jesus is not, and some Bible scholars say he intended to offend them. Jesus explains that since the commandments of the Pharisess are not God’s laws, they won’t stand the test of time and will be uprooted. God’s Word is to be our root.

Make sure your leaders are not blind. It is all possible that the Pharisees themselves did not understand the Scriptures.

Jesus explains what matters is if we are unclean on the inside, not the outside. Evil comes from our nature. Words can and do hurt others; what you eat and drink only hurts yourself.
