BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 19, Day 2: Revelation 14:1-5

Summary of Revelation 14:1-5

John saw the Lamb on Mount Zion, and 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. He heard a sound from heaven. They sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among mankind and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb.

3a) John saw the Lamb on Mount Zion, and 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. He heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters and like a loud peal of thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps. And they sang a new song.

b) The 144,000 had the Lamb’s name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. The song they sang in heaven no one else could learn except them who had been redeemed from earth. They also did not defile themselves with women and were virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among mankind and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb. No lie was found in their mouths; they are blameless.

4) They were chosen by God to be saved and they believed in the sacrifice of Jesus as their Lord, Savior, and Redeemer.

5a) We are God’s as the Holy Spirit dwells within our bodies. How we behave, think, and speak reflects the character of Jesus. We walk in Christ’s ways. We should offer praise and gratitude to the Lord. We live in righteousness and truth. We live with Jesus’ mindset. They humble themselves and put others and their interests first. We are to do everything without grumbling and arguing. We confess our sins and are purified when we do so.

b) Speech. I am quick to speak without thinking. Behavior sometimes. Putting others first. In general, just being Jesus-like.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 is one of my favorite Bible verses. We are God’s, and we are to do everything for God and honor Him in every way.

144,000 is 12 x 12 x 1000. Bible scholars disagree on who they actually are. Some say this is an actual number; others say they represent all Jewish believers. They could also refer to martyrs.

This is the same group referred to in  Revelation 7, believers given a seal of protection. Here, they are not defeated and are triumphant, worshipping the Lord with Jesus.

New songs are not often seen in Scripture, but when they are, they celebrate a great act of God.

Mount Zion is the place where Jesus will come and reign on earth after the Second Coming. Mount Zion can also refer to God’s people in general.

They belong to the Lord (as the mark shows).

The sound from heaven is the voice of God (other translations say ‘voice’). (Revelation 1:15 and 4:5)

The elders have harps  Revelation 5:8

The virginity shows they are spiritually pure. Yet, they probably are celibate. (1 Corinthians 7:25-35). They are Jewish believers (Revelation 7:4-8). They were redeemed to be firstfruits. They represent hope.

BSF Study Questions John’s Gospel: The Truth Lesson 19, Day 2: John 14:15-17

SUMMARY OF JOHN 14:15-17

Jesus tells the disciples they will receive the Holy Spirit (an advocate) that will live inside them.

BSF Study Questions John’s Gospel: The Truth Lesson 19, Day 2: John 14:15-17

3) They all work together for our good, to bring us closer to God.

4a) Advocate — someone who recommends and supports you or your cause. An advisor, defender, mediator, and intercessor.

Spirt of Truth — The Holy Spirit who allows us to understand God’s spiritual truths and guide us towards spiritual truth.

b) Right now, the disciples cannot understand the Holy Spirit because it has not been given yet (not until after Jesus’ death). After Jesus’ death, the disciples will receive the Holy Spirit inside of them and it will live inside of them, and then they will be able to understand the Holy Spirit.

5) That it exists at all!

Conclusions BSF Study Questions John’s Gospel: The Truth Lesson 19, Day 2: John 14:15-17

I love how Jesus loves us enough to prepare us and to give us gifts, such as a guide for life. How amazing!

End Notes BSF Study Questions John’s Gospel: The Truth Lesson 19, Day 2: John 14:15-17

Loving Jesus is keeping his commandments. It’s action.

Obedience comes out of love. Disobedience can be from a lack of love.

This is Jesus’ 2nd assurance he gives to the disciples: that he will give them a helper (Holy Spirit).

The Holy Spirit will abide with us permanently.

Jesus was already with them. The Holy Spirit would then be in them.

BSF Study Questions People of the Promise: Kingdom Divided Lesson 19, Day 2: Selected Passages From Isaiah 1-39

BSF Study Questions People of the Promise: Kingdom Divided Lesson 19, Day 2: Selected Passages From Isaiah 1-39

3a) Isaiah 1:1-15; Isaiah 3:1-4:1: Rebelled against God. They are corrupt. They have forsaken the Lord and turned their backs on Him. Their offerings are meaningless. Their hands are full of blood. Their words and deeds are against the Lord. They parade their sin like Sodom.

The elders and leaders of his people:
“It is you who have ruined my vineyard;
the plunder from the poor is in your houses.
15 What do you mean by crushing my people
and grinding the faces of the poor?”
6 The Lord says,

“The women of Zion are haughty,
walking along with outstretched necks,
    flirting with their eyes,
strutting along with swaying hips,
with ornaments jingling on their ankles.

Chapters 28-31: Their hearts are far from God. Their worship of God is based on merely human rules they have been taught/ They sought the protection of Egypt. Chapter 28’s sins are because the people are wicked and self-reliant. They rely on Egypt and go to Egypt.

b) Isaiah 1:24-25; 5; 7:18-25; 39:5-7: God will turn His hand against you;[a] I will thoroughly purge away your dross and remove all your impurities. God will destroy Judah and the people. They will be desolate.  Lord will use a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates River—the king of Assyria—to shave your head and private parts, and to cut off your beard also. There will be only briers and thorns instead of vineyards. The people will be carried off to Babylon.

4a) Isaiah 1:16-17:

  1. Wash
  2. Make yourselves clean.
  3. Take your evil deeds out of my sight;
  4.  Stop doing wrong.
  5. 17 Learn to do right; seek justice.
  6.   Defend the oppressed.[a]
  7. Take up the cause of the fatherless;
  8.  Plead the case of the widow.

b) Isaiah 1:18-20: God makes people’s sins white and pure. If people are willing and obedient, they will prosper. If they resist and rebel, they will be devoured by the sword.

5a) The messages might have encouraged them and offered them hope because God will take care of them and punish them.

b) God is just. He is faithful. God defends His people. God cares for His people.

6) God always puts me where He wants me, even if it’s in difficult spots or circumstances. I am to grow with Him during these times.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions People of the Promise: Kingdom Divided Lesson 19, Day 2: Selected Passages From Isaiah 1-39

We see God’s mercy will ultimately end when it’s time to face the piper.

End Notes BSF Study Questions People of the Promise: Kingdom Divided Lesson 19, Day 2: Selected Passages From Isaiah 1-39

God fulfills His promises one way or another. He warns His people over and over again, in mercy giving them time to repent. When God has had enough, He gives out consequences, which are devastating.

God uses other nations to enact His judgment on His people.

God offers to cleans us through the blood of Jesus. All we have to do (and all Judah had to do) was to surrender to God and obey. Seems simple but how many people turn from God in the face of this choice?

Yet, there is hope in Christ. There is always hope.
