Summary of John 16:8-11

When the Holy Spirit comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment.

BSF Study Questions John’s Gospel: The Truth Lesson 21, Day 3: John 16:8-11

6a) John 3:19-21: Light exposes evil deeds, and those in the light live by the truth of the Holy Spirit that exposes sin/darkness.

Romans 3:23: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. The Holy Spirit reveals our sins, so we can ask for forgiveness.

b) Isaiah 64:6: All of us are unclean due to our sins, and the Holy Spirit reveals to us our own uncleanliness.

Romans 3:19-20: The law makes us conscious of our sin, and we are cleansed though Jesus, whom the Holy Spirit reveals to us.

c) John 3:36: Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them. The Holy Spirit reveals Jesus to us.

Ephesians 2:1-3: Everyone deserves judgment due to our sins, but the Holy Spirit works inside believers to show us Jesus.

7a) Only the Holy Spirit allows us to discern truths and see the light of the Gospel. Unbelievers are blind.

Summary of John 15:26-16:7

The Holy Spirit will testify about Jesus. Jesus warns his disciples that they will be persecuted and put out of the church. He has to go away so that the Holy Spirit will come and be with them.

3a) Advocate: reveals that the Holy Spirit will speak for them to the Father. Spirit of Truth: reveals that the Holy Spirit will speak truth to them/you.

b) The Holy Trinity work together for our good so that we can be close to God forever. The job of the Holy Spirit is to tell us and show us who Jesus is. Jesus intervenes on our behalf, so we can be with God. Being with God is the end-all.

4a) The disciples will be put out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.

b) Be prepared for it. Pray about it when it happens. Ask for the power of the Holy Spirit to help and intervene.

c) Jesus loves believers. He wants us to be prepared for hardships, and he equips us with the tools to persevere through them.

5a)  It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

b) Gosh, too many to list here. He guides me in all of my griefs and struggles, and I lean on His understanding not my own for them.

I love how God always provides for our needs by giving us everything we need to make it through this world.

John 13-17 is Jesus’ instruction and prayer for the disciples and for us.

Jesus warned his disciples of the coming persecution, so they could be prepared for it and fortify themselves and not stumble on their mission to spread the Gospel.

Recall that Peter had asked this question (John 13:36) and Thomas (John 14:5).

Despite all the grief and suffering, the disciples would be better when Jesus left them. They will grow in Christ, and the Holy Spirit would come.

Now, Jesus could be with every believer all the time. We understand him better because he is with us and we have his words. We have a way to and a relationship with God.

The Holy Spirit can only come if Jesus left. We need the power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish the work God has for us.

Summary of John 15:18-25

The world hates the disciples, but the world hated Jesus first. The world hates them because they were chosen by Jesus. They will persecute them as they persecuted Jesus. But, if they obey, then they will obey them as they obeyed Jesus.

No one has excuse for their sin. Unbelievers hate God as much as they hate Jesus.

13a) Unbelievers, things of the world, sin, Satan

b) The world hates Jesus and Christians because they were chosen by Jesus to be believers; they were chosen for greater things and to bear fruit. Simply put, they are jealous of the lives Christians lead. I see this a lot in the way others want to constantly tear you down because they cannot have the happiness that you have.

14) Compassion, love, understanding, and with the message of the Gospel.

15) Teaching the world about Jesus. Continually fortifying themselves against the evil one with prayer and reading of the Word. Serve one another. Love others. Follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit in your life. Live by the teachings of Christ. Relate to others to bring them over to God. Do good, not evil.

It is always a good reminder to be in this world but not of it; to live according to Jesus and not according to the world; and to help and teach others in an effort to bring them over to Christ.

Jesus is preparing his disciples for persecution. The world will hate them, as they hated him. Their inner hypocrisy and sin is exposed, so it makes them angry and they lash out at believers.

There is no excuse for not knowing Christ. This makes them angry, too.

In short, expect hatred, but answer with love.

Summary of John 13:18-21

Jesus said, “Whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me,” meaning God.

He also says one of them will betray him.

9a) It was predicted that Jesus would be betrayed in Psalm 41:9: Even my close friend,
    someone I trusted,
one who shared my bread,
    has turned against me.

b) That if Jesus was betrayed, we can be betrayed, too. Yet, Jesus forgave Judas, as we must forgive those who betray us, too.

10a) The devil. The devil has a way to twist everything, even what we see with our own eyes. We must be wary of this and fortify ourselves with the power of Jesus in order to overcome.

b) Betrayal is a violation of your trust in someone else. Because it’s someone we know and care about (or someone we think we know), which hurts more than a stranger because we trusted them.

11) Another example of his omniscient powers to strengthen the disciples’ faith in him and for later generations to have more faith, too.

12) Because he loved Judas, and no one wants to see their loved one go down the wrong path of evil.

The religious officials tried to seize Jesus again when he explained that he is God’s Son and asked them why they don’t believe in the works since they don’t believe in him. Jesus crossed the Jordan where many came to him and believed.

12) Jesus uses Psalm 82, saying that the judges were called “gods,” as they administered God’s will, so in light of Jesus’ works, why can he not be called the Son of God.

SUMMARY OF JOHN 9:35-41

Jesus seeks out the blind man after his excommunication. He asks him if he believes in him. The man says yes and worships him. He tells the Pharisees they are responsible for their spiritual blindness.

12) Jesus is compassionate. He seeks us out when we need him the most. He cares, he listens, he helps.

13a) By giving him more information and teaching him.

b) He confessed his belief in Jesus, and he acted on it by worshipping Jesus.

c) Lord, I believe in you whole-heartedly — your goodness, your help, your healing, and your chastisement. I worship you with all that I am and all that I have.

14) He tells the Pharisees they are responsible for their spiritual blindness. He has come to judge the world for their unbelief. But, if you admit your spiritual blindness and need for a Savior, you can see. But those who say they are spiritual but aren’t can be made blind to the Word.

15) He has helped me to understand His word and to abide by it, as well as given me help in applying His truths to my own life.

The blind man is awarded for his faith.

Jesus used the title “Son of Man” often to refer to himself.

Note how Jesus’ interaction with this man is different than we’ve seen in other areas of the Bible. First, he was healed. Then, he was persecuted. Finally, he believed. All of our paths are different.

The man worshipped Jesus, and Jesus accepted his worship. This is another sign Jesus is God.

Jesus came as judge.

It all comes down to accountability. If the Pharisees would admit their blindness, they could see. Yet, they choose to remain spiritually blind.

Jesus offended many with his teaching that he is the flesh and blood that leads to life. He tells the people he is giving them Spirit and Life, yet they reject him. God enables people to believe in him.

9a) Accepting Jesus’ sacrifice gives you life. The physical body is not enough to give you life. You must accept Jesus’ teaching and his sacrifice (flesh and spirit) to receive eternal life. The spiritual gives life, not the physical.

b) Without being all it, it’s meaningless and oftentimes, insufficient. You must do things whole-heartedly for Jesus. Going through the motions is not enough.

10a) They just could not accept his teaching of the flesh and blood. They could not accept him as God’s Son.

b) No, not really. If it did, I would pray for a deeper understanding and seek resources that explained it to me.

11a) They reject him. Disdain. “Just another prophet.” They dismiss him.

b) With loving faith and wholehearted devotion.

There are always doubters and naysayers. Our job is to seek the Truth in God’s Word and in prayer and to ignore those who try to make you fall.

Many found Jesus’ teaching hard to understand and accept that he would die for them. Jesus understood their confusion, but did not break. Many probably were looking for a messianic king, not a sacrificial lamb.

Better to accept now that to face Jesus on judgment day in all his glory as an unbeliever and receive condemnation.

Many came for bread and not for the spirit, and Jesus knew that. They had not then truly come to him.

Many left because they only wanted material gains from Jesus. Perhaps, many were confused by the religious leaders  (John 6:52).

It was the first apostasy Jesus faced. Yet, many would come back. We all have highs and lows in our beliefs. Yet, you must stay faithful even when things are rough.

SUMMARY OF John 6:52-59

Jesus says that unless the people accept his flesh and blood sacrifice on the cross, they will not have eternal life. Those who do accept his sacrifice will have Jesus remain in them. Jesus’ bread is eternal, unlike the manna bread their ancestors ate.6)

6) The blood protected the people from God’s judgment when they were in ancient Egypt. The blood covered the people, so God did not see their sins and passed over them, rather than judging/killing them.

7) The people ate the meat. When the people ate the meat, they believed in God’s instructions to save them. When people accept Jesus’ flesh sacrifice on the cross, they believe in Jesus and in his promise to save them.

8a) Eternal life. That Jesus would always abide in them. They will be raised up on the last day.

b) It makes it more concrete; accept what Jesus did on the cross and you’ll have life.

Great explanation of Jesus of what he meant by “eating” his flesh and blood. Accept his sacrifice; that is all. Albeit, it was hard for the people of the day to grasp this idea since it was so very new.

Bible scholars believe that the Jewish leaders did understand Jesus here but chose to use the face-value meaning of actually eating and drinking Jesus’ blood rather than the symbolism here to help condemn Jesus. This causes confusion amongst others.

Jesus continues his explanation in order to refute the Jewish leaders’ interpretation.

It in internalizing the metaphor that leads to life. Then, we abide in him and him in us.

Once you receive Jesus (eat his flesh), you will have everlasting life.

All this took place at a synagogue on a Sunday in a church in Capernaum.

SUMMARY OF JOHN 6:10-15

Jesus had the people sit down. There was about five thousand men in total. Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. Once everyone had eaten their fill, the disciples gathered the leftovers, so there would be no waste. They filled twelve baskets.

The people intended to make Jesus, the Prophet, king, so he retreated again.

BSF Study Questions John’s Gospel: The Truth Lesson 8, Day 4: John 6:10-15

9a) Jesus gave specific instructions to the disciples, which they followed. It’s good to follow exactly what Jesus says to do.

b) He prayed and gave thanks. This should always be the first thing we do with anything in life, from getting out of bed to major and minor life decisions.

10) Jesus makes a bunch of food from nothing. Jesus can make our nothings into something, too. I can have faith in what He will do in my life and for me even when I can’t see it. I pray a lot, but I can remember to pray for everything all the time.

11a) He always gives us everything we need in abundance, including what we need for spiritual health and wellness. By oversupplying the people’s physical needs, he points to how he can meet our spiritual, too.

b) By speaking about Jesus to others; by giving Jesus all the credit for the goodness in my life; by having faith in all that he is and all that he does.

12a) They wanted to make him king to rule over them and be their leader, as well as defeat their enemies. Jesus’ kingdom was spiritual, not physical and of man.

b) When I want something and he doesn’t. When I want the easy way and not the hard way.

Love this miracle! It epitomizes who Jesus is: his caring, compassion, and provision for all of us.

Sitting down is like lying down in green pastures.  Psalm 23:1-2 Jesus is the host here. He is in no hurry. He is our shepherd and provider of everything we need.

We not told how the division of the food happened, and the people weren’t even aware of it at the time. Jesus simply distributed food that was never ending — like his love for us.

Everyone ate their fill. They were satisfied, and the leftovers were more than what the boy had brought. Remember, that eating and drinking in the Old Testament was a great event and signified prosperity and happiness.

The disciples participated by distributing the food.

Jesus likes to give in abundance. He more than meets our needs.

Calling Jesus “The Prophet” is a reference to Moses’ prediction of the coming Prophet/Jesus. (Deuteronomy 18:15)

Jesus also provided the people with food like Moses did in the wilderness with manna.

The people wanted to use Jesus to throw off the Roman powers. They were only interested in what Jesus could do for them. Jesus, of course, wanted nothing to do with this, so he retreated to be with His Father.

Jesus is our King, just not in the way we think of a king.

Jesus explains that his purpose is to do the the will of him (God) who sent him and to finish God’s work.

3a) John 17:4 says Jesus’ food is to finish God’s work and bring him glory.

b) Good question. I’m unsure. It should be to do the work God has set in front of me. My kids and family bring me inner joy. Helping others. Praying for others. Being useful, purposeful. Doing His work.

4a) They were talking about physical food, not spiritual food, so they were confused by his answer.

b) Give to others. Pray for them. Serve God. Bring others to Christ. Teach others God’s ways.

5a) What I have to do in the moment. Work. Eating. Planning. My daily goals. Tasks.

b) He reminds me that my calling is His calling for me, not others’ calling for me. He wants me to prioritize him and others.
