6) The Trespass (Adam’s work) with the Free Gift (Christ’s work):
1. The Origin & Representative Head
-
The Trespass: Stems from one man’s disobedience (Adam).
-
Insight: A single human failure can corrupt an entire lineage.
-
-
The Gift: Stems from one man’s obedience and God’s initiative (Jesus Christ).
-
Insight: Grace originates entirely in God’s sovereign love and Christ’s active obedience.
-
2. The Scope of Sins Covered
-
The Trespass: Sparked by a single sin (one trespass).
-
Insight: It takes only one violation to break fellowship and bring ruin.
-
-
The Gift: Operates in the face of many trespasses.
-
Insight: Christ’s gift is infinitely powerful—it isn’t overwhelmed by centuries of accumulated human sin, but actively covers millions of transgressions.
-
3. The Judicial Result
-
The Trespass: Results in judgment and condemnation.
-
Insight: Under Adam, humanity stands legally guilty and condemned before God.
-
-
The Gift: Results in justification and righteousness.
-
Insight: Christ cancels the legal penalty, declaring undeserving sinners righteous in God’s sight.
-
4. The Prevailing Realm & Power
-
The Trespass: Establishes the reign of death over humanity.
-
Insight: Sin creates a spiritual tyranny where human beings are helpless victims enslaved to death.
-
-
The Gift: Causes believers to reign in life through grace.
-
Insight: The gift does not just restore us to neutral; it elevates us to a position of royal victory and eternal life over death.
-
What We Learn Overall
-
The Trespass reveals human frailty, the spreading infection of sin, and the absolute necessity of a Savior.
-
The Gift reveals that God’s grace is asymmetrical—it does not merely match or balance Adam’s damage, but completely overwhelms and out measures it (“how much more!”).
7a) Adam’s trespass impacts all humanity through inherited sin, spiritual condemnation, and universal mortality. People access God’s gift of righteousness and eternal life by believing in Jesus Christ (John 3:16), confessing Him as Lord, and calling on His name in faith (Romans 10:9–13).
b) Justification from Christ because I know the Holy Spirit lives inside of me and I am a child of God!
One knows who reigns in their life by examining their trust, allegiance, and the fruit of their daily walk.
1. What You Rely On for Acceptance
-
Adam Reigns: You rely on self-righteousness, personal merit, or moral performance to feel acceptable. When you fail, you default to shame, despair, or self-justification because your security rests on human effort.
-
Jesus Reigns: You rely entirely on Christ’s finished work and imputed righteousness. When you sin, you run to Him for forgiveness rather than hiding, knowing your standing rests on His obedience, not yours.
2. The Direction of Your Desires and Fruit
-
Adam Reigns: Life is driven by self-sovereignty, pride, and the natural flesh—where sin, spiritual apathy, and fear of judgment have the final say (Romans 6:12; 8:5–6).
-
Jesus Reigns: Life is marked by a desire to obey God, a hatred for your own sin, and the presence of spiritual fruit like love, peace, and humility (Galatians 5:22–23). Obedience becomes an expression of gratitude rather than a burdensome duty.
3. Your Ultimate Allegiance and Confession
-
Adam Reigns: Self remains on the throne, determining right and wrong on personal terms.
-
Jesus Reigns: Jesus is actively confessed and submitted to as Lord (Romans 10:9). You surrender your will to His, letting His grace rule your heart and conscience.

Love this! Love how no matter how bad our sins are, Christ has them all covered! We accept His gift freely, and death then cannot contain us!
End Notes BSF Study Questions Romans: From Guilt to Grace Lesson 9, Day 3: Romans 5:15-19
We can sum up this passage as such: Adam brought death; Jesus brings grace and life.
Jesus and Adam are known as the two men. Both represent all of humanity. Each human is either Adam or Jesus. We are all born under Adam, but we can choose to be born again under Christ.
Sometimes, they are called federal heads, from our federal government. We choose to be represented by Adam, or we choose to be represented by Christ. Which one do you choose?
Disobedience makes us sinners; obedience makes us righteous.
Jesus can act on our behalf just as Adam acted on our behalf.
END NOTES SUMMARIZED
Having introduced Adam as a “type” or pattern of Christ in verse 14, Paul now explores the grand contrast between them. While Adam and Christ both act as corporate representatives (federal heads), the impact of Christ’s work vastly supersedes the devastation caused by Adam’s fall.
1. The Superiority of the Gift over the Trespass (vv. 15–16)
-
Asymmetry of Power: Adam’s trespass brought death, but God’s grace through Christ does not merely match Adam’s ruin—it “overflows” far beyond it.
-
One Sin vs. Many Trespasses: Judgment required only one sin to bring condemnation upon the human race. In contrast, Christ’s gift of justification covers and overcomes millions of accumulated human trespasses across history.
2. Reversing the Reign: From Death to Believers Reigning (v. 17)
-
The Dominion of Death: Under Adam, death acted as a tyrannical king ruling over helpless humanity.
-
The Dominion of Life: Those who receive Christ’s abundant grace and gift of righteousness are elevated from victims of death to kings in life. Believers do not merely survive; they “reign in life” through Jesus Christ.
3. Condemnation vs. Justification (vv. 18–19)
-
Representative Disobedience vs. Obedience: Adam’s singular act of disobedience constituted the “many” as sinners, legally and experientially positioning humanity under condemnation.
-
Representative Righteousness: Christ’s singular act of obedience (His life of sinless perfection culminating in the cross) constitutes the “many” as righteous before God, granting justification and eternal life.
Conclusion
Romans 5:15–19 highlights the ultimate triumph of God’s grace over human sin. Adam’s fall plunged humanity into condemnation and death, but Christ’s obedience achieves a far greater restoration.
The overarching conclusion is that Christ’s gift of righteousness completely dismantles and surpasses Adam’s legacy of ruin. Where Adam’s single failure brought universal death, Jesus’ finished work covers countless sins, bestowing justified standing and enabling believers to reign in life through Him eternally.
