Jesus prays for us to be in God and Jesus, to have glory, to have unity, to be with Jesus, and to see Jesus’ glory. Jesus has made the Father known to all so that the love of God may be in people and Christ be in us, too.

Unity among the body of Christ is important to Jesus. This helps others come to Christ when they see all believers together and acting as one.
Jesus wants to be with us and for us to see God’s glory.
Fun Fact: 17:24 is the only time Jesus says “I want” to God recorded in the Bible.
Jesus prays for our glory. It helps with unity, too.
The idea that the unity of God’s people would show the world that Jesus was sent from God the Father is repeated here. Unity also demonstrates Jesus’ love.
Jesus prays to be with us. Love has existed since the beginning.
Jesus’ work declares God’s name and reveals him.
Jesus prays that the love he receives from the Father would be in us, too, and that he would be in us.
Jesus’ mission was to reveal God’s glory so that we can share eternal life with Him.
Jesus continued his prayer for his disciples, asking for God to protect them so that they may be one as they are one. Protect them form the evil one. Sanctify them by truth.
The world hates them as they are not of the world any more.

9a) They were not in the world any more, as they now lived for eternal purposes. Their beliefs transformed them so that they could do God’s will and work in this world. They were holy.

10a) Sanctify means, “The process or result of being made holy; to set apart for a sacred purpose; to free from sin.” Christ sanctifies us (makes us holy), so we can be with God. We are set apart for God’s purpose and use.

c) The truth that I do have a God-given purpose to use for Him.
Great prayer. Great analysis of our sanctification by Jesus for God.
We all must be kept in Jesus in order to resist the evils of the world.
They are to be kept in God’s name and kept together.
Jesus prayed for the disciples’ joy in life. He wants us to have joy, too.
We should be in the world, but not of the world. We are to shine Jesus wherever we go: shine his light, be his witness, serve others, and show God’s grace.
Yet, while we’re in the world, Jesus prays for our protection from the evil one.
Sanctification is God’s work.
Jesus prays for his disciples. They have obeyed him and know everything comes from God. They accept Jesus and know he is from God. They are God’s and his. They glorify him.

Jesus lived out God’s goodness and righteousness.
God gave Jesus the disciples. Jesus then gave them to the world.
Believers belong to both God and the Son. We have Jesus glorified in us.
Jesus prayed to God to glorify him so that he could glorify God. He says eternal life is granted to those that know God and himself. Jesus is finishing the work God sent him to do.
3a) Glorify means “to make glorious by bestowing honor, praise, or admiration; to elevate to celestial glory; to praise and worship God.” Believers glorify God by praising his name, bringing an offering, worshipping Him, and keeping his commands.
b) When Jesus is glorified, so is God, so by glorifying Jesus, God is glorified, too. He will bring God’s glory to those on earth to see, and, especially, to believers.
4a) Most people know about Jesus, meaning they know who he is. Christians know Jesus personally, as in they believe in him, worship him, does God’s will in their life, and grow closer to him by following his laws and decrees.
b) Having Jesus in my life gives my life meaning. It gives my work meaning, too. It motivates me to do His will.
5) Jesus had the same glory as God. However, after his death, Jesus’ glory grew because he became nothing for us. He was given the highest place next to God and his name is above all names. Every knee will bow before Jesus. “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” Hebrews 1:3
I love contemplating the glory of God and Jesus because I can’t fully understand it.
Many Bible scholars consider this the greatest prayer recorded in the Bible.
Fun Fact: This is the only, continuous prayer of Jesus in the Gospels.
Note Jesus lifted his eyes to heaven, whereas most Christians bow their heads to pray today.
Jesus prayed for himself, but it was for God. Jesus can only be glorified if God is.
God’s glory is revealed when His worth and character are shown.
We should give reasons for our prayers, too. Glorifying God in some way.
We see the glory of God in Jesus’ death, as it was God’s plan.
Jesus has authority over us and is the one to grant eternal life.
We are God’s gift to Jesus. How magnificent!
Jesus glorified God his entire life with his faith, obedience, and work. Can we say the same thing?
Now, our work just needs to be done, too.
Jesus wants the same glory he had before he became human — a pristine glory.

Jesus tells his disciples he is about to die, but he will resurrect for them (they did not understand this at the time.)
God will give you whatever you ask in Jesus’ name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. God loves you because you have believed in Jesus. You will be scattered, but you will have Jesus. You will have peace even when you have troubles, for Jesus has overcome.
11a) “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.” ‘Because I am going to the Father’?
b) They will weep and mourn, but their grief will turn into joy. He gives them the analogy of a woman giving birth. Birth is painful but afterwards, she has her baby, and she forgets all about the pain.
c) His resurrection and reappearance to them.
12a) Jesus will tell you plainly about God. In that day you will ask in my name. The Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. In essence, there will be no barrier to God any more.
b) Jesus knows all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.
c) God has all of it, so we don’t have to. We cannot control others or what happens around us; all we can control is ourselves. This offers us peace.
13) We can overcome our troubles because Jesus has already done so. He gives us the strength we need, so we can have peace.
We have strength through the power of Jesus, and we have peace because of it.
The disciples needed to be prepared for the coming crisis. He knew their sorrow would become joy. There would be greater joy when the disciples had access to God after his death.
Jesus’ death gives us access to God. God loves us.
Jesus is God who came to the world as man, would die, and then rise again.
God is always with Jesus.
Jesus offered his disciples peace and said they would have troubles. He left, but overcame all for us, giving us peace.

The Spirit of Truth/Holy Spirit will guide you, speak to you what he hears, and tell you what is to come. He will glorify Jesus.

9) The Spirit guides believers to do His will and reveals Jesus to us, and God and Jesus influence non-believers as well. All work together to ensure God’s plan unfolds. Everything that is Jesus’ is God’s, which reveals God to us, too.
10) The Holy Spirit helps us to understand what we need. He leads us to the right scripture passages to study that will speak to us and that we need to hear. Today, I need help to stay healthy and uninjured and to accomplish my goals.
The Holy Spirit is such a calming presence in our lives.
The Holy Spirit testifies to Jesus (John 15:26) and reveals him to us. That is his job.

We grow as more of God’s Truth is revealed to us through the Holy Spirit.

When the Holy Spirit comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment.
6a) John 3:19-21: Light exposes evil deeds, and those in the light live by the truth of the Holy Spirit that exposes sin/darkness.
Romans 3:23: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. The Holy Spirit reveals our sins, so we can ask for forgiveness.
b) Isaiah 64:6: All of us are unclean due to our sins, and the Holy Spirit reveals to us our own uncleanliness.
Romans 3:19-20: The law makes us conscious of our sin, and we are cleansed though Jesus, whom the Holy Spirit reveals to us.
c) John 3:36: Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them. The Holy Spirit reveals Jesus to us.
Ephesians 2:1-3: Everyone deserves judgment due to our sins, but the Holy Spirit works inside believers to show us Jesus.

The Holy Spirit allows us to know God’s word and to know right from wrong.
Conviction of sin is rejection of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit leads us to belief in Jesus.
The Holy Spirit convicts us of our sins.
The Holy Spirit shows the righteousness of Jesus.
The Holy Spirit shows us that there will be a reckoning or judgement of others who don’t believe in Christ as their Savior.

The Holy Spirit will testify about Jesus. Jesus warns his disciples that they will be persecuted and put out of the church. He has to go away so that the Holy Spirit will come and be with them.
3a) Advocate: reveals that the Holy Spirit will speak for them to the Father. Spirit of Truth: reveals that the Holy Spirit will speak truth to them/you.
b) The Holy Trinity work together for our good so that we can be close to God forever. The job of the Holy Spirit is to tell us and show us who Jesus is. Jesus intervenes on our behalf, so we can be with God. Being with God is the end-all.
4a) The disciples will be put out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
b) Be prepared for it. Pray about it when it happens. Ask for the power of the Holy Spirit to help and intervene.
c) Jesus loves believers. He wants us to be prepared for hardships, and he equips us with the tools to persevere through them.
5a) It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
b) Gosh, too many to list here. He guides me in all of my griefs and struggles, and I lean on His understanding not my own for them.
I love how God always provides for our needs by giving us everything we need to make it through this world.
John 13-17 is Jesus’ instruction and prayer for the disciples and for us.
Jesus warned his disciples of the coming persecution, so they could be prepared for it and fortify themselves and not stumble on their mission to spread the Gospel.
Recall that Peter had asked this question (John 13:36) and Thomas (John 14:5).
Despite all the grief and suffering, the disciples would be better when Jesus left them. They will grow in Christ, and the Holy Spirit would come.
Now, Jesus could be with every believer all the time. We understand him better because he is with us and we have his words. We have a way to and a relationship with God.
The Holy Spirit can only come if Jesus left. We need the power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish the work God has for us.
