BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 25, Day 5: Revelation 20:1-10

Summary of Revelation 20:1-10

An angel bound Satan for 1,000 years, throwing him into the Abyss (aka hell). Then, he’ll be set free for a short time.

John saw thrones where those who had been given authority to judge sat. Those who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God were there. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years.  This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.

Satan is judged after the 1,000-year period. He will be released. Satan will deceive the nations and gather his followers. They will come against God’s people, but God will devour them with fire from heaven, and Satan will be thrown into the lake of burning sulfur for all of eternity.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 25, Day 5: Revelation 20:1-10

12a) That Satan’s only mission is to try and tempt God’s people to follow him and sin — to defeat God, His purposes, and His people. That he won’t ever give up. But God will defeat Satan once and for all. God is in charge of all that Satan does.

b) God is omnipotent. He is in control. He uses Satan for his purposes, and Satan will suffer for his evil deeds one day.

c) Fundamentally, I will be with God forever, and it will be the most wonderful thing! My eternity is secure. It helps me to spread the Word and be most urgent about others turning to Christ today.

13) It truly is hard to imagine because it will be so different than ours. There will be no evil, no violence, no destruction, no crime, no sin, no suffering. Animals will be completely different. Truth and holiness will reign. There will be peace and worship. It will be incredible!

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 25, Day 5: Revelation 20:1-10

It’s good for us to ponder what life will be like in the future. It can give us hope when we are down and questioning life. It can encourage us when we are surrounded by evil and death. It’s important to remember God has a plan, and He’s got it (and us!).

Curious as to what the world will be like in the 1,000-year reign and its purpose? Check out this short read/video for a great answer/depiction HERE

Why does God allow Satan and evil in this world? Because Satan serves God’s purposes.

Satan is the ultimate deceiver. Our best weapon against deceit and lies is God’s Word.

We know that Satan is not currently bound because there is evil and sin in the world. In addition, Peter said that Satan is free still (1 Peter 5:8).

The 1,000 years is a Millennium. During this time:

So why 1,000 years?

The Millennium will give Jesus a chance to show his glory and show man’s true nature without Satan around.  It will show the true power and preeminence of God.

Great explanation on the first and second resurrections HERE

Those given authority to judge could be the 24 elders (Revelation 4:4), the apostles (Matthew 19:28), or the saints (1 Corinthians 6:2-3).

These people reign with Jesus while Satan is bound.

These people are those God resurrects before the Tribulation and the martyrs and those who come out of the Tribulation alive.

Fun Fact: The New Testament uses the word resurrection 40 times, which refers to the physical resurrection every time except in Luke 2:34.

The righteous will rise in phases:

  1. Christ rose first
  2. The “many”
  3. The church
  4. Tribulation saints
  5. Old Testament saints

All of the righteous rise before the wicked and before the Millennium.

The second death here means separation from Christ.

Some people during the Millenial and Jesus’ reign will only be outwardly conforming to God’s ways; they will never be committed to God. These are the people Satan will recruit.

After 1,000 years of perfection, man will still rebel. This shows that it’s our nature that causes sin, never God. We, at heart, are evil.

The rebellious will be those who survived the Great Tribulation and their descendants who don’t know God.

Gog and Magog here are symbols because these are prophetic enemies of Israel in Ezekiel 38-39.

Satan once again tries to destroy God’s people (what he always tries to do). God stops it before it starts.

Remember that the beast and the false prophet were cast into the lake of fire at the beginning of the thousand years (Revelation 19:20).

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 25, Day 4: Revelation 20:7-10

Summary of Revelation 20:7-10

Satan is judged after the 1,000-year period. He will be released. Satan will deceive the nations and gather his followers. They will come against God’s people, but God will devour them with fire from heaven, and Satan will be thrown into the lake of burning sulfur for all of eternity.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 25, Day 4: Revelation 20:7-10

9a) Satan will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—and to gather them for battle.

b) Satan never gives up. He is always evil and always trying to destroy God. Because Satan gathers followers, man is evil, too.

10) Fire from heaven will devour Satan’s army, and Satan himself will be thrown into the lake of burning sulfur to be tormented day and night forever.

11a) You would think that people would believe in God after having Jesus reign for 1,000 years. But, no. This just shows how evil mankind really is. This shows me that I always must be close to God least my human nature takes over, too. I have to help others be close, too.

b) In so many ways. People want to do what they “feel” is good at the time and don’t care about the consequences. Some people thrive on drama rather than God’s peace. We must strive to do good and be good, but we have to want that.

c) Read God’s Word, pray, go to Bible study, surround myself with godly people, and continually strive to be like Jesus.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 25, Day 4: Revelation 20:7-10

I love seeing Satan get what he deserves! Go, God! Yet, I hate seeing how mankind is innately evil and some still go against God. We need to be prayer warriors always for the lost.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 25, Day 3: Revelation 20:4-6

Summary of Revelation 20:4-6

They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years.  This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 25, Day 3: Revelation 20:4-6

6a) They had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God. They were risen and reigned with Christ for the thousand-year period.

b) God is good and just, and He rewards those who serve Him.

7) The first resurrection is the raising of all believers. This takes place in various stages. This is before the second resurrection where the wicked will be judged by God. The second resurrection is the raising of the unbelievers. The Millenial kingdom divides these two resurrections. Those who have done what is good will share in it.

8a) The second death (that is eternal damnation to hell).

b) “The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.”

c) It gives me such hope that I will live again forever with Jesus.

d) It gives me the strength to get through my days.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 25, Day 3: Revelation 20:4-6

Such powerful news that believers will rise again and avoid the second death. Praise be to God and Jesus!

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 25, Day 2: Revelation 20:1-3

Summary of Revelation 20:1-3

An angel bound Satan for 1,000 years, throwing him into the Abyss (aka hell). Then, he’ll be set free for a short time.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 25, Day 2: Revelation 20:1-3

3a) John saw an angel coming down from heaven. He held the key to the Abyss and a great chain. He had the power to bind Satan.

b) Satan will be set free after the 1,000 years for a short time.

4) God has control over Satan and all of His enemies. They only act because God gives them permission to do so. God is sovereign over all.

5a) Satan only acts with God’s permission. Satan tells lies to deceive people. He blinds unbelievers so that they cannot see God. Satan is always looking to make us sin.

b) It increases my confidence in God’s power knowing God is in control of all, including Satan and all evil. I know that one day Satan and evil will be no more and that is encouraging in a world full of sin.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 25, Day 2: Revelation 20:1-3

Great lesson about how God is in control of everything, even evil. We must remember that God does not allow us to be tempted more than we can handle, as we saw with Job. In God is all strength to resist evil and sin.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 24, Day 5: Revelation 19:17-21

Summary of Revelation 19:17-21

An angel calls to the birds to eat the flesh of all those who have fallen before Jesus. The beast and the false prophet were captured and thrown into the lake of burning sulfur. The rest were killed and feasted on by the birds.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 24, Day 5: Revelation 19:17-21

12) They will be killed and birds will eat their flesh.

13) A false god is anything put above the real God, so this includes wealth, other people, etc. People choose sinful ways over God’s ways and don’t repent over them. They are blinded by their sins.

14) I aim to do God’s will every chance I get. I also intend to tell more people about God and Jesus in hopes they choose God before it’s too late.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 24, Day 5: Revelation 19:17-21

This is a sad picture of what will happen to unbelievers. It should spur you to spread the word more, especially to friends and family, so that all may be saved.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 24, Day 5: Revelation 19:17-21

It’s not in the NIV, but in other Bible translations, the word “flesh” is used 5 times. This shows the importance of choosing God over our sinful ways.

It seems foolish to us, believers, to wage war against God and Jesus since it’s obvious who will win. But, unbelievers are blinded by hatred of Jesus, so they try anyway.

John did not describe the war. Most likely, it was a pure slaughter by Jesus.

The beast and the false prophet are thrown alive into the lake of fire (which is hell) before the final judgment (Revelation 20:11-15).

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 24, Day 4: Revelation 19:11-16

Summary of Revelation 19:11-16

John sees a white horse and rider whose name is Faithful and True (Jesus). He judges with justice and wages war. His name is the Word of God. His robe is dipped in blood. He has heavenly armies that follow him riding white horses. Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword to strike down the nations. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: King of kings and lord of lords.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 24, Day 4: Revelation 19:11-16

9) Jesus. Jesus is faithful and true to his word and promises. He is the Word of God, being God himself. Jesus is God.

10) Jesus’ robe is dipped in blood, the blood that cleanses us of our sins so that we can be forever with God. This is important since this is Salvation, the ultimate sacrifice in this world. Jesus is faithful and true to his promises to punish evil doers and bring heaven on earth one day.

11) These attributes of Jesus give me courage when my days are dark and help me keep moving forward to what God has planned for my life.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 24, Day 4: Revelation 19:11-16

I love the visual John gives us of Jesus on a white horse with his army headed to punish unbelievers and bring heaven to earth once again. So amazing is our God!

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 24, Day 4: Revelation 19:11-16

Almost all Bible scholars see these verses as the Second Coming of Christ.

Jesus returns to Earth to reclaim it for us. Remember, in ancient times, not many people had horses, and most soldiers were foot soldiers.

Jesus will keep his promise to judge those on Earth after everyone has had time to repent of their sins.

Jesus’ judgment is righteous.

The many crowns show Jesus as the ultimate king. This is a far cry from the crown of thorns he wore the last time he was on Earth.

The blood could be Jesus’ blood he shed for our sins or the blood of his enemies.

The army is God’s people (Revelation 17:14Jude 1:14-15) (angels, too), and their weapons are essentially the cleansing received from Jesus himself.

The word of God is like a sword coming from Jesus’ mouth.

Jesus will come to reign on earth with an iron rod as predicted Psalm 2

No one knows Jesus’s name because no one can comprehend him. Many Bible scholars believe the name written is Yahweh, the sacred name of God.

Fun Fact: God has almost 1,000 different names in the Bible.

Fun Fact: Yahweh appears in the Old Testament more than 6,800 times. It appears in every book except Ester, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 24, Day 3: Revelation 19:6-10

Summary of Revelation 19:6-10

The celebration in heaven continues after the fall of Babylon with the great multitude shouting and praising the Lord. The wedding of the Lamb has come. The angel says blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 24, Day 3: Revelation 19:6-10

6a) Jesus’ salvation of those who believe in him and their final dwelling place in heaven.

b)

John 14:15-21: Jesus asked God to send us the Holy Spirit to guide us. Jesus died so that we may live.

John 15:9-17: Jesus loves us as much as God loves him. We are Jesus’ friends and he has given us knowledge of him to guide us. Jesus chose us to bear fruit. He gives us what we ask for. He offers us love and compassion.

2 Corinthians 11:2: “I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him.” Godly jealousy is intense, showing us God’s continued love for us. We will be pure when we are married to Christ forever.

Ephesians 5:25-33: God gives us spouses to love one another as Christ loves us.

7) Believers

8a) Angels are below Jesus and God. We are not to worship anyone but the Lord and Jesus.

b) Nothing should be above God, so I try to ensure that nothing is.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 24, Day 3: Revelation 19:6-10

I’ve always loved the picture of believers/the church as Christ’s bride. It’s such a relatable image, and it’s wonderful that one day the final wedding will take place and we’ll be with Jesus forever!

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 24, Day 3: Revelation 19:6-10

We see the concept of the church as Christ’s bride often in Scripture (2 Corinthians 11:2Ephesians 5:25-32)

We see Israel/God’s people as God’s wife in the Old Testament (Hosea 2:19-20Isaiah 54:5Ezekiel 16)

Being clean is being pure, loyal, and faithful.

We are to be presented to Jesus as pure.

Nothing created (including angels) should ever be worshipped. Angels worship Jesus (Hebrews 1:6)

Prophecy reveals Jesus.

Fun Fact: The bride is the 4th and last woman mentioned in the book of Revelation in the Bible.

Here, we see the 4th beatitude or blessing in Revelation: “Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper.”

Beatitudes of Revelation:

  1. Revelation 1:3
  2. Revelation 14:13
  3. Revelation 16:15
  4. Revelation 19:9
  5. Revelation 20:6
  6. Revelation 22:7
  7. Revelation 22:14

The bride is the church, and the wedding guests are believers.
