BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 18, Day 2: Genesis 3; Romans 8:18-25

Summary of Genesis 3

The serpent questions Eve about what God said about the Tree of Knowledge. He tells Eve she will not die like God said when she eats the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. Instead, her eyes will be opened and she will be like God, knowing good and evil.

Eve saw the fruit as pleasing and she wanted wisdom so she ate. She gave the fruit to Adam, who was with her, and he ate too. Their eyes were opened and they realized they were naked, so they covered themselves with fig leaves. The next time God walked in the garden, Adam and Eve hid from Him. God called to them, wishing to see them. Adam responded that he was naked and afraid. God knew they had eaten from the Tree of Knowledge, and Adam blamed Eve. Eve admits she did eat the fruit.

God punishes everyone involved in the Fall. The serpent is cursed above all and made to crawl on its belly. Enmity is put between Satan and mankind. Jesus will crush Satan. The woman will have pain during childbirth, and Adam will rule over her. Adam will toil for food all the days of his life and God cursed the ground. He will return to the earth as dust (or eventually die).

Adam named Eve, and God made them garments of skin to wear. Because of Adam’s disobedience, knowledge, and sin, Adam would not be allowed to live forever. God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, stationing cherubim and a flaming sword to guard the way to the Tree of Life.

Summary of Romans 8:18-25

Sufferings are not worth comparing to our coming glory. We await our adoption and redemption into heaven. We wait for heaven patiently.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 18, Day 2: Genesis 3; Romans 8:18-25

3) All people suffer as punishment for Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden and ushering in sin to the world. Also, Christ suffered, so we do, too.

4) Loss and grief. Prayer and time.

5) No matter our earthly sufferings, we can look forward to the glory that awaits us in heaven. I know that days are full of work and suffering, but I strive to do God’s will for my life through it all.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 18, Day 2: Genesis 3; Romans 8:18-25

Great reminder that we do not belong on this side of heaven, and that no matter what happens here, it cannot compare to the glory we will experience one day!

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 18, Day 2: Genesis 3; Romans 8:18-25

The serpent deceived the woman who then told the man to eat. This brought in sin, pain, work, and suffering to all of humanity and the world.

Life in the spirit allows us to understand and endure suffering. We patiently await our future glory.

Suffering on earth is temporal; heaven is eternal.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 5: Reread Revelation 13:1-18

Summary of Revelation 13:1-18

John saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. The beast resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast. People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?”

The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months. The beast slandered and blasphemed God and all those in heaven. It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them.  All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life.

John saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. It exercised all the authority of the first beast and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast.  This beast performed great signs, and it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast. The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast. It forced all people to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name, 666.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 5: Reread Revelation 13:1-18

12a) Dragon, The First Beast from the Sea, The Second Beast from the Earth. The Second Beast is attempting to imitate Jesus, who is the Lamb of God. He is trying to appear meek and mild in order to deceive believers into thinking he is Jesus. He needs to appear unintimidating in order to succeed.

b) God’s message is one of love, peace, compassion, and gratitude. The deceptive trinity is trying to deceive everyone in order to get them to fall and turn to evil ways. It’s one of bullying, sin, and evil.

13a) Deuteronomy 13:1-4: We must not listen to false prophets who ask us to follow false gods. It is a test to see if we love God with all of our hearts and souls. We must obey God, keep His commands, and hold fast to Him. Matthew 7:15-20: False prophets will come to us in sheep’s clothing, but we will recognize them by their fruits. Mark 13:22-25: False prophets will perform signs and wonders we must we wary of. 1 John 4:1-3: False prophets say that Jesus is not from God.

b) Wisdom. From God, through prayer, and in His Word with the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 5: Reread Revelation 13:1-18

Great warning of false prophets. We must test those who perform signs and miracles. We must always go back to God’s Word and His character to ensure what we see is in line with who He is! We must always be vigilant!

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 5: Reread Revelation 13:1-18

The Jewish people saw the sea as a frightful place. This may be because most people could not swim and people did not know there were others across the wide ocean from them. Therefore, the sea was seen as evil and chaotic in ancient times.

Note that the beast is not the dragon. Therefore, this beast is not Satan as we’ve seen in Revelation 12:3. It’s separate from the dragon/Satan.

Note the dragon has the same number of heads and horns as the beast (Revelation 12:3)

Remember horns are a symbol of strength and power in the Bible. Therefore, the beast/dragon would be hard to kill with 7 heads.

Fun Fact: The word Antichrist only appears in the Bible five times in four verses (1 John 2:182:224:3, and 2 John 7). The beast is believed to be the antichrist. This thing will be the opposite of Christ.

Note that the 10 crowns of the beast is different than the 7 of the dragon. Remember, 7 is the number of completeness. Here, Bible scholars believe the 10 refers to the number of nations that the beast rules over, which comes from Daniel’s vision of the antichrist (Daniel 7:24). Bible scholars are divided over which head/heads are wearing the crowns. Many see this as the beast that Daniel saw due to the 10 horns Daniel 7:7

The description of the beast also connects with Daniel’s vision Daniel 7  Daniel’s beasts represent governments, so many think that this beast does so as well.

Since the beast is worshipped, he is considered a man here who is supported by Satan. This is the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit (Revelation 11:717:8). Therefore, he is some sort of evil spirit.

The beast has been wounded, most likely by God, but the beast healed as mentioned here, too (Revelation 13:12 and 13:14)

The people are worshipping the dragon along with the beast since the dragon gave the beast authority. This is similar to God and Jesus, too. This is Satan worship, but people don’t like to acknowledge they are devil worshippers.

The dragon and beast will be strong, but not for long.

42 months is the 3.5 year time frame that Revelation keeps mentioning. The beast rules for the first half of the 7 years but under God’s authority. He is against those that God has saved.

Those who do not worship the beast will be persecuted/killed.

Those who do worship the beast will not be saved. Their names will be omitted from the Book of Life.

All of this happens according to God’s good plans. God is in control, and those who were saved were pre-chosen, too (Revelation 17:8).

John then says to listen up. If you lead others astray, you will pay the consequences for your actions.

God’s people must have faith and endurance to prevail.

This second beast is subordinate to the first beast and comes from the earth, not the sea.

This beast is a false prophet. (Revelation 16:1319:2020:10)

This makes 3 evil beings we’ve seen (dragon, the beast from the sea, and the beast from the earth) that form a perverse trinity.

It is important that we are made aware of these false prophets and their signs because we don’t know when they will show themselves. We must always be vigilant for them.

We must all be careful because the image of the beast will appear very real to us. It is what is referred to as the abomination of desolation (Daniel 9:27Matthew 24:15, and 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4).

If you don’t have the mark of the beast, you will most likely die because you can’t buy or sell goods.

Letters were assigned numeric values in ancient times, which is why the beast’s name is 666.

Bible commentators have put forth dozens of theories on who the person may be with numbers that add up to 666. Interestingly, the letters of Jesus add up to 888. 666 falls way short of Jesus (obviously). No doubt it is an unholy Trinity.

The beast is impersonating Christ. That is all it can do. It has no originality whatsoever.

Satan is mocking God.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 4: Revelation 13:11-18

Summary of Revelation 13:11-18

John saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. It exercised all the authority of the first beast and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast.  This beast performed great signs, and it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast. It forced all people to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name, 666.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 4: Revelation 13:11-18

9)  The second beast exercised all the authority of the first beast and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast. It performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people, which deceived them. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast. The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed.

10a) To deceive believers.

b)

Moses (Exodus 7:1-5): To make himself known and to rescue His people

Elijah (1 Kings 18:30-39): To show the world and His people that God is the One True God

Jesus (John 11:41-44; 20:30-31; Acts 2:19-21): To show others that God is God, to show others that Jesus is indeed the Son of God who has come to redeem God’s people so that people may have everlasting life. To bring others to God so that they can be saved from eternal damnation.

11a) The mark was on their right hands or on their foreheads, and it was the number 666. The mark allowed them to buy and sell goods.

b) The mark is our name written in the Book of Life, the seal of the Holy Spirit. The benefits are immense. We receive the Holy Spirit so that we can have the mind of Christ, so that we can understand God and His Word and live by God’s laws. It means our sins are forgiven, we can be with God, and we receive eternal life with God in heaven. It means we are redeemed!

c) God protects us by giving us no more temptations than we can handle. He gives us weapons to avoid sin, such as prayer, His word, and the Holy Spirit to guide us. He intervenes when He needs to to keep us safe. He sends others to us with messages from God and to protect us from others. He is so, so good! I have way too many times when God has protected me. He has given me an innate feeling when something is not right, and I have bolted, which has saved me many times!

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 4: Revelation 13:11-18

I love the graciousness of God to make Himself known! I love the idea in Ephesians of us being God’s possession. What else could you want besides God to have and hold you?

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 3: Revelation 13:5-10

Summary of Revelation 13:5-10

The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months. The beast slandered and blasphemed God and all those in heaven. It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them.  All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 3: Revelation 13:5-10

6a) He uttered proud words and blasphemies. He was given the power to wage war against God’s people and to conquer them.

b) All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s Book of Life (unbelievers).

7) The Lamb’s Book of Life is where all of the names of those saved by the blood of Jesus are written. The Book of Life contains the names of all God’s redeemed (Revelation 20:15)

8a) They will face captivity and death. They will need patient endurance and faithfulness to endure their suffering.

b) The world is hard. Circumstances are hard and life is hard. We need God’s word and strength to make it through each and every day. I get through by God’s promise to endure in faith and in Christ so that in the end, I will get to stand with Him. I need all of God’s help (his Word, power, hope, and promises) to succeed in what He has given me to do.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 3: Revelation 13:5-10

It’s helpful to know that the beast succeeds only because God allows him to. It’s also helpful to know that believers are spared worshipping the beast by God’s strength.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 2: Revelation 13:1-4

Summary of Revelation 13:1-4

John saw a beast coming out of the sea. BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 2: Revelation 13:1-4

3) John saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. The beast resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority. What stood out to me the most was the details and the fact that these creatures are given authority by God.

4) The dragon gives the beast his power, throne, and authority like God gives his Son, Jesus, the same. The people worship the dragon because of this like they worship God and ask who is like the beast and who can wage war against it. God and Jesus are extremely close, which the dragon and the beast emulate as well. Note that the dragon and the beast have the same number of horns and heads, so they are similar beings. The beast imitates Jesus because it has been mortally wounded but is healed (just like Jesus was killed and then risen, too). The people are worshipping the dragon along with the beast since the dragon gave the beast authority. This is similar to God and Jesus, too.

5a) The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast. People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?”

b) Evil influences. Influences of unbelievers. Societal influences. The need to put the world’s things above Godly things. Distractions. An easier like than what God has called you for.

c) Unsure if I stood my ground in Christ that others would see, but I definitely have in my own life and choices for myself, such as doing God’s work and choosing Him over sin’s temptations. The results are that I am stronger in Christ for it all and I am closer to God as well.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 2: Revelation 13:1-4

I love the details here and how God is gracious enough to allow us to “see” these things through John.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 5: Revelation 12:13-17

Summary of Revelation 12:13-17

The dragon pursued the woman. The woman was given wings to escape the dragon. The dragon tried to sweep the woman away with a river, but the earth saved the woman. The dragon was enraged that he could not get to the woman, so he targeted believers instead.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 5: Revelation 12:13-17

13) The dragon pursued the woman who gave birth to the male child.  He waged war against the rest of her offspring or the believers who keep God’s commands and hold fast to their testimony about Jesus.

14a) God gave the woman wings to escape the dragon. He also allowed the earth to swallow up the river the dragon had sent against her. He waged war against the rest of her offspring or the believers who keep God’s commands and hold fast to their testimony about Jesus.

b) The belief in Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross to save all believers allows us to overcome Satan, sin, and death. God’s gift of Jesus brought us righteousness and justification before God forever, making Satan’s powers nothing to us. This means so much. I can live forever with Jesus in heaven. I can worship him now and forever, be forever grateful for this, and do my best to live out God’s calling on my life.

15) God provides all comfort. One day we will be rewarded in heaven for all that we do here on earth. We don’t have to fear death or sin. We are forgiven once and for all. This provides the ultimate comfort and peace to believers.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 5: Revelation 12:13-17

I love how no matter what the devil does, God always beats him. No matter what the devil hurls at us, we win. So great!

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 5: Revelation 12:13-17

Many say the woman represents Israel or the Jewish people in particular. Satan attacks the Jews because they are God’s chosen people and the people who brought forth Jesus. By attacking the Jews, Satan hopes to thwart God’s plan for all of humanity.

We see the wings of the Eagle in (Exodus 19:4)

The 3.5 year period is mentioned again here.

We see the fury of the devil here as mentioned by Jesus as the abomination of desolation Matthew 24:15-22, but God ultimately is in charge and protects His people.

When the dragon loses, he turns towards humanity. This, again, takes place during the time of the Tribulation.

Many people believe the devil knows our thoughts. However, there is no evidence of this, so we can assume that only God knows our every thought.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 4: Revelation 12:10-12

Summary of Revelation 12:10-12

Jesus now comes to rule after the accuser/dragon has been hurled down.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 4: Revelation 12:10-12

9) “Salvation, power, kingdom of God and authority of Jesus” has come. The accuser has been hurled out of heaven to earth.

10)

“They triumphed over him”: Believers beat the devil by the blood of Jesus.

“By the blood of the Lamb”: Jesus’ blood saved believers from God’s wrath.

“And by the word of their testimony”: By God’s word and testimony of what Christ did for us, we are saved and have life.

“They did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death”: Jesus gave up his life so that believers could gain life with Jesus.

11a) There was a war in heaven until Satan was hurled to earth. Those on earth must fight the devil who is attacking them, but those in heaven are free now. Note Satan’s time is limited to attack humanity.

b) That time is of the essence since no one knows when Jesus will return.

12) I know that I have the strength to defeat Satan with God’s strength in me. I have confidence that Satan will not win over my life. I worship God all the more for this!

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 4: Revelation 12:10-12

Such a picture! Satan being hurled out of heaven and all the saints rejoicing for Jesus’ victory!

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 4: Revelation 12:10-12

Note the voice is not God because of the words “our brethren” referring to humans.

The saints and believers overcame Satan in heaven because of:

  1. The blood of Jesus
  2. Testimony
  3. Our desire to give up our physical lives for our spiritual life with Jesus

If we don’t cling to our physical lives, Satan cannot harm us. We are God’s spiritually.

Satan’s time and influence on earth is limited. This should encourage every believer when they are under attack by the devil.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 3: Revelation 12:7-9

Summary of Revelation 12:7-9

Satan/red dragon and his angels were thrown out of heaven by Michael and his angels.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 3: Revelation 12:7-9

6) Michael and his angels fought the dragon and hurled them down to earth.

7) Satan only has power that God has granted him. Satan operates under God’s control. Satan’s power is limited by God. God rules over Satan.

8 ) I find comfort and courage knowing that God is always in control, that he won’t give me more than I can handle, that I can defeat Satan through the power of the blood of Christ, that I am stronger than Satan since I have the Holy Spirit within.

Love the emphasis here that Satan is not as strong as God, and God always wins. A great reminder that we can win, too.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 16, Day 3: Revelation 12:7-9

Bible scholars believe this battle happens at the mid-point of the Great Tribulation, or the 7-year period as explained by Daniel (Daniel 12:1).

Bible scholars are unsure if this is a real battle or a spiritual one.

Note that Satan can enter heaven, but only at God’s allowance.

Note the many names that Satan is referred to as. This emphasizes his nature.

Fun Fact: Satan falls 4 times in the Bible. This is the 2nd fall.

Satan falls:

  1. From glory (Ezekiel 28:14-16)
  2. From heaven (here),
  3. To the pit/Abyss (Revelation 20).
  4. To the lake of fire (Revelation 20).

Demons/demonic spirits are really fallen angels, as stated here.
