Summary of Romans 11

Paul is speaking and talks about how God did not reject Israel and has preserved a remnant. Some Jews have believed in Christ as Savior (like Paul). He speaks of how the Gospel is now available to the Gentiles because of Israel’s sin. God has provided salvation for those who believe. However, Israel will be saved by God’s grace as well. The Messiah is for everyone.

8 ) God has preserved a remnant by grace. God loves the Jews and has not stopped loving them because they have rejected Him. He still calls for them.

9a) I think the root is Israel. Most Bible scholars believe the root is Abraham, the patriarch of Israel, although some say it’s Christ.

b) Many Bible scholars think that the wild shoots are the believing Gentiles. The branches are unbelieving Jews.

10) God always yearns for His people and the Gentiles to come to him. He will accept those who believe in Him once again.

11) Good question. I think he gives me grace and mercy every day despite my sins. He has shown me mercy by allowing me to believe in Christ and be saved and to help others do so as well. I respond by trying to do His will each and every day. Trying to be more Christ-like. That’s all we can do I think.

Definitely not an easy passage to understand with all of the symbolism, but one that shows the unending grace of our Lord and how He is always waiting for us with open arms.

We must understand that most Jews rejected Jesus as their Messiah. Yet, many have embraced Christ (the remnant).

The story of Elijah is that Elijah had thought that he was the only one left serving God, but God told him there was indeed a remnant.

The remnant was chosen by God’s grace alone (a gift from God).

God will enlighten or darken our understanding as He pleases (Isaiah 29 and Psalm 69).

God allowed the Jewish people to stumble/fall/not believe so that the Gospel could come to the Gentiles. The Gospel, remember, went to the Jews first (Acts 13:46, 18:5-6, 28:25-28) and then once the Gospel was rejected, it went to the Gentiles (which is everyone who is non-Jewish).

Hopefully, this would motivate the Jews to come to Jesus, too.

The Gentiles are grafted into the olive tree by God’s grace.

We are to continue in God’s goodness. And, the Israelites can be grafted back into the tree as well.

The Jews are blinded so that the Gentiles can come in. However, God plans to restore Israel, His people. The Jews’ blindness is temporary.

God still loves and calls for the Israelites.

Paul praises God for His goodness and gives him all the glory.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 7, Day 3: Acts 2:22-47

Summary of Acts 2:22-47

Peter addresses the crowd at Pentecost. He reviews Jesus’ life, saying how Jesus was raised from the dead as death could not hold him. He quotes David. Jesus was raised by God and now sits at his right hand. Jesus is now Lord and Messiah. Peter urges those in the crowd to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus and receive the Holy Spirit. 3,000 were baptized and saved.

The new believers bonded. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

6a) They realized that they had sinned and that they were the ones who had Jesus killed. They, as sinners, are the reason Jesus had to die to save them.

b) That Jesus is Lord and Savior to all, whether you believe it or not. All are sinners are are therefore in need of Jesus’ sacrifice and saving grace.

7a) “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” God’s plan has always been for us to be with Him, and Jesus was the only way.

b) Many accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior and were baptized. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

c) I believe that Christians do draw near one another, especially in church. They help each other and others in need. They meet together to grow in Christ. They praise Him for all He is.

I love the emphasis on how we are all sinners and responsible for the need for Jesus’ sacrifice, yet, we all come together and do better to be more like Jesus and walk in the Lord’s ways. Great stuff!

Peter now quotes Psalm 16, which is David speaking of the Messiah. Jesus bore the full wrath of God on the cross and was raised from the dead perfectly.

Peter then quotes Psalm 110 about the Messiah who is both Lord and Christ.

Fun Fact: Psalm 110:1. is quoted in the New Testament more than any other single verse (at least 25 times).

Everyone is responsible for Jesus’ death. Now, what to do about it?

Simple: Come to Jesus.

Repent (be sorry for your sins and turn your direction) and be baptized in Jesus’ name. The gift of the Holy Spirit would be given to them and their children to come.

The new Christians continued to learn from the apostles. They continued in fellowship. They broke bread, said prayers, and helped each other and others.

What a great example of how to live!

Summary of Acts 2:1-21

Pentecost came after Jesus’ death. All of the believers who were gathered were filled with the Holy Spirit as violent winds came from heaven and tongues of fire came to rest on them. Each heard their own language being spoken and were amazed.

Peter quotes Joel and explains that the Holy Spirit has been poured out on them. They have been saved!

3a) Jesus prophesied that the Holy Spirit would come upon all believers when they believe in his sacrifice for them on the cross. The Holy Spirit lives inside of every believer. He will teach us all things and remind us of Jesus’ words. The Holy Spirit will testify about Jesus. The Holy Spirit will come once Jesus goes away. The Holy Spirit will prove the world wrong about sin, righteousness, and judgment.

b) They were believers in God and Christ all waiting for the promised Holy Spirit. They will then be saved due to Jesus’ death and receive the Holy Spirit.

4a) It speaks about how believers can and will prophesy. God has and will show wonders in heaven and signs on the earth before the Last Days. Everyone has and will call on the name of the Lord and be saved.

b) Most definitely. I believe I’d be a base, selfish person without the Holy Spirit and God’s guidance. I am doing the Lord’s work, not my own.

5) Many of my husband’s relatives. I believe the best way to show God’s word and love is by the way you act and how you shine the Lord’s Spirit to others. So, I will continue to be forgiving, gracious, helpful, evangelical, etc to them.

Pentecost was an annual Jewish festival that took place 50 days after Passover. It celebrated the harvest (Numbers 28:26).

Interestingly, Pentecost also marked the day the Law was given to God’s people. Thus, it’s fitting that the Holy Spirit was now given on this day, too.

It’s been 10 days since Jesus went to heaven (Acts 1:3).

The word for Spirit in Hebrew and Greek is the same as for wind. Thus, the sound of heaven is a wind-like noise. The Holy Spirit is a breath from God.

Fire is purification, as seen in fire from heaven in other parts of the Bible.

Here is where we see the speaking in tongues. Many Christians do communicate in another language in prayer (1 Corinthians 14:14-15).

Peter, representing the apostles, speaks. He is bold and confident. He quotes the prophet Joel to explain Pentecost to his listeners.

Fun Fact: This is the first of 3 Old Testament passages Peter will quote in his speech.  Joel 2:28-32, Psalm 16:8-11, and Psalm 110:1.

SUMMARY OF JOHN 5:40-47

The religious leaders refused to come to Jesus. They do not have the love of God in their hearts. They accept and seek glory form other, but they don’t seek the glory that comes from God.

Moses is their accuser. They don’t believe Moses because Moses wrote about Jesus and they don’t believe him.

13a) The religious leaders could have believed in Jesus. But it was by choice that they would not come to him. They did not have the love of God in their hearts (aka they were unbelievers).

b) For them to accept Jesus into their hearts.

14) We need to believe in Jesus and have God in our hearts. It’s a choice.

15) Because God and Jesus are the same. They are inextricably intertwined as part of the Trinity. If you reject one, you reject both.

The religious leaders did not believe all of the overwhelming testimonies before them (John the Baptist, his works, Scripture, and God), so they would not believe Jesus’ word either.

They did not love or honor God.

If another comes (the Anti-Christ), they would embrace him instead.

The religious leaders cared only about honor from others. Their pride got in the way.

Moses wrote about Jesus (Deuteronomy 18:15), and the leaders still rejected him when he came. Therefore, the religious leaders don’t believe Moses, either.

The testimony was overwhelming, and the religious leaders still did not believe. Very sad, indeed.

Jesus says that John testifies for him. Also, the works that he is doing (given to him by the Father) testifies for him. God testifies to Jesus. God’s Word testifies to him.

5:33-35: John the Baptist. John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

5:36: The works Jesus is doing given to him by the Father. This proves he is God’s Son.

5:37-38 (See also Matthew 3:13-17, 17:5): God. This proves Jesus is God’s Son. Matthew tells us that the Spirit of God descended upon Jesus for his baptism with God declaring Jesus as his Son.

5:39 (See also Luke 24:27): God’s Word/Scripture

12) If you don’t, you won’t be saved. And, because Jesus and God are one ultimately.

It was super important in ancient times and in Jewish culture to have others vouch for you. This was established in Deuteronomy 19:15.

John the Baptist may already have been executed by Herod when this scene was recorded because Jesus uses the past tense when speaking about him.

  1. John the Baptist testifies to who he is.
  2. His works/signs/miracles testify to who he is. These are signs only God could do previously.
  3. God testifies to who Jesus is.
  4. The Scriptures speak of Jesus everywhere.

SUMMARY OF JOHN 5:16-30

The Jewish leaders began to persecute Jesus because he healed on the Sabbath. Jesus said that God is always at work, and so is he. He called God his Father, which they did not like either.

Jesus explained that he can do nothing by himself. He can only do what God does. Both God and Jesus give life. Jesus is the judge. Those who believe in Jesus will have eternal life. The dead will hear his voice and live. He seeks to please God only.

6) The Jewish leaders began to persecute him. They tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

b) It is comforting to know God has my back and is working for my good. I can rest easy and not worry as much.

5:19-20: The Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.

5:21, 24-26:  For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 5:22, 27-30: The Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.

28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. 30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.

5:23: That all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.

The Jewish leaders are so petty in their persecution of Jesus, so much did they feel threatened. Yet, Jesus always has the right things to say, and he is always right and makes sense.

The Jewish leaders simply hated Jesus so much did they feel threatened. They used the fact he claimed to be God. And, they used their interpretation of the Sabbath against Jesus. The Sabbath was meant to rest in God and all He does for us. Instead, it became a burden when the religious leaders distorted its meaning with so many restrictions.

God worked on the Sabbath, and he will, too.

Jesus’ Explanation of His Relationship With God

  • The Son does as the Father does
  • The Son can do nothing of Himself
  • Whatever God does, the Son also does in like manner
  • The Father loves the Son
  • As the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will
  • More divine power would be revealed
  • Jesus judges so that all will honor him
  • He who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life
  • The dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live
  • Jesus has life of his own

In short, Jesus is equal with God, and they act together always. Jesus is the only way to God.

From here on, the Jewish leaders will be working hard to kill Jesus.

Summary of John 5:1-15

Jesus went up to Jerusalem. There was a pool called Bethesda, and a great number of disabled people used to lie near it. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” The man said he had no one to carry him to the pool. Jesus told him to pick up his mat and walk, and he did!

3) The man could not walk. He had been an invalid for 38 years. He was in need of spiritual healing since Jesus told him to stop sinning. He was hopeless since no one would help him into the water.

4a) Jesus asked the man if he wanted to get well. He asks this because some people don’t want to get well. It is also asking the man if he had faith in him to get well. The man explained his situation, which was hopeless.

b) Jesus said to the man, “Get up! Pick up your mat, and walk.” The commands required the man to do something (get up, pick up your mat, and walk) and required faith in Jesus’ words.

c) “Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” It shows Jesus’ concern for the man’s spiritual health as well as his physical health. He is warning the man to stop sinning especially since he now has a new life.

5) I feel in time, answers reveal themselves. In the moment, it is extremely difficult to keep moving forward!

I love this miracle/sign of Jesus that John records. The power of Jesus when he speaks!

John 5 begins a new section in the Book of John. We’ll see a shift to more public disputes rather than Jesus as an unknown prophet.

The pool of Bethesda was a purported to be a place of healing.

Out of the multitude waiting, Jesus picked this man to heal. Spurgeon speculates that this was because no one else looked to Jesus for healing; instead, they looked at the water only.

The man responded out of faith, for he does what Jesus commands.

Jesus’ command to walk was to choose a new life.

Note the Jewish leaders asked the man who told him to walk, not who healed him. They didn’t care about the healing; all they cared about was who broke their man-made laws.

Jesus was just as concerned about the man’s spiritual health as he was for his physical health; in fact, more so, since this is infinitely more important.

The man reported Jesus out of fear of the religious leaders.

SUMMARY OF 2 CHRONICLES 20:31-21:3

Jehoshaphat reigned in Jerusalem 25 years. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. The high places were not removed, and the people still has not set their hearts on God. Later, Jehoshaphat made an alliance with the evil king Ahaziah, king of Israel, to build trading ships. The Lord destroyed the ships as punishment for this alliance.

Jehoshaphat died and Jehoram his son succeeded him.

13a) Both. It was corrective as a consequence of aligning with a wicked king and protected Judah and Jehoshaphat from having to deal with Israel and risk more pagan ways introduced to their country.

b) He has many times moved me away from those who would cause me to sin. God is good.

14) For the most part, Jehoshaphat did right in the eyes of the Lord with only a few stumbles. As humans, we all do this. That is our goal. To walk most of the time with the Lord, and when we fall, to get right back on the path of the Lord.

I loved learning about Jehoshaphat. Didn’t know/remember much about him. Great king with some faults like we all have. Great examples of God being with His people. Good stuff.

The writer of Chronicles does not set the fault of the people still not walking in the ways of the Lord as Jehoshaphat’s fault, which is true. There’s only so much control you have over your people as a king.

1 Kings 22:48-49 is the parallel passage of the wrecked ships. Another offer of alliance with Ahaziah after this failed one was refused by Jehoshaphat. He learned his lesson (which is a great lesson for us, too!).

God’s mercy shown through when he wrecked the ships. This prevented Jehoshaphat from an ungodly alliance — something none of us want.

It is presumed that the gift of fortified cities to Jehoshaphat’s other sons got them away from the influence of Jehoram, so they would not be seen as a threat.

SUMMARY OF 2 CHRONICLES 20:14-30

The Lord spoke via the prophet Jahaziel in response to Jehoshaphat’s prayer. He told them that they should go out to meet the army tomorrow and to not be afraid. The battle is the Lord’s battle, and they won’t have to fight it. The Lord will deliver them to Judah. Everyone bowed down in worship of the Lord.

The next day, Jehoshaphat and the people went to meet the enemy, singing praises to the Lord. The Lord set up ambushes and turned the armies of the enemy against one another. They slaughtered each other, leaving no one left alive to fight. Jehoshaphat found lots of plunder amongst the men and carried it way, taking three days to do so. They praised God for what He had done.

When the other neighbors of Judah heard how the Lord had destroyed the enemies of Judah, the fear of God came upon them and Judah was at peace.

10) God rewarded Jehoshaphat’s prayer handsomely, completely annihilating the enemy without Jehoshaphat having to lift a finger. The Lord set up ambushes and turned the armies of the enemy against one another. They slaughtered each other, leaving no one left alive to fight.

11) Stand firm in the Lord, and God will deliver your enemy. Do not be afraid or discouraged. God will be with you.

12a) They sung praises to God, thanking Him. They had total faith God would do what He said He would do. And God did! They never lost faith; they never wavered.

b) Thank God for His faithfulness each and every day. That He is in control and will work things out as they are meant to be worked out. And, He will answer prayers in unexpected ways.

Powerful stuff! God shows up when asked and delivers more than expected. God is good.

It still took faith to show up even if the people didn’t have to battle. Oftentimes, the Lord gives us work to do to help strenthen our faith even though He has got it.

Jehoshaphat still consulted with his people, as a good king should. Since the singers went first, this showed that Jehoshaphat believed in God with total faith since they would be the first to be killed if God had not shown up.

Faith won the battle, but it was the praise that exhibited faith.

Jesus fought and won our final battle for us over sin; all we have to do is have faith in Jesus and believe.

SUMMARY OF 2 CHRONICLES 20:1-13

Jehoshaphat inquired of the Lord about the threat from the Moabites, Meunites, and Ammonites. The people fasted to ask the Lord. Jehoshaphat prayed to God, praising God and telling Him how they had spared Moab and Ammon when they came out of Egypt and now they are repaying them with war. He says he does not know what to do, but our eyes are on you. Every man, woman, and child stood before the Lord, waiting.

6) The Moabs and Ammonites were threatening war against Judah, and they did not know what to do.

7a) The people fasted to ask the Lord. Jehoshaphat prayed to God, praising God and telling Him how they had spared Moab and Ammon when they came out of Egypt and now they are repaying them with war. He says he does not know what to do, but our eyes are on the Lord.

b) Panic usually. Then a calmer mind. Then ask others. And ask God for help.

8 ) “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you.” This is most of us most of the time. Even when you don’t know what to do, God does, so lean on Him.

9) Moving. Unsure what to do, so I’m just praying and waiting for His timing.
