BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 24, Day 4: Revelation 19:11-16

Summary of Revelation 19:11-16

John sees a white horse and rider whose name is Faithful and True (Jesus). He judges with justice and wages war. His name is the Word of God. His robe is dipped in blood. He has heavenly armies that follow him riding white horses. Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword to strike down the nations. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: King of kings and lord of lords.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 24, Day 4: Revelation 19:11-16

9) Jesus. Jesus is faithful and true to his word and promises. He is the Word of God, being God himself. Jesus is God.

10) Jesus’ robe is dipped in blood, the blood that cleanses us of our sins so that we can be forever with God. This is important since this is Salvation, the ultimate sacrifice in this world. Jesus is faithful and true to his promises to punish evil doers and bring heaven on earth one day.

11) These attributes of Jesus give me courage when my days are dark and help me keep moving forward to what God has planned for my life.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 24, Day 4: Revelation 19:11-16

I love the visual John gives us of Jesus on a white horse with his army headed to punish unbelievers and bring heaven to earth once again. So amazing is our God!

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 24, Day 4: Revelation 19:11-16

Almost all Bible scholars see these verses as the Second Coming of Christ.

Jesus returns to Earth to reclaim it for us. Remember, in ancient times, not many people had horses, and most soldiers were foot soldiers.

Jesus will keep his promise to judge those on Earth after everyone has had time to repent of their sins.

Jesus’ judgment is righteous.

The many crowns show Jesus as the ultimate king. This is a far cry from the crown of thorns he wore the last time he was on Earth.

The blood could be Jesus’ blood he shed for our sins or the blood of his enemies.

The army is God’s people (Revelation 17:14Jude 1:14-15) (angels, too), and their weapons are essentially the cleansing received from Jesus himself.

The word of God is like a sword coming from Jesus’ mouth.

Jesus will come to reign on earth with an iron rod as predicted Psalm 2

No one knows Jesus’s name because no one can comprehend him. Many Bible scholars believe the name written is Yahweh, the sacred name of God.

Fun Fact: God has almost 1,000 different names in the Bible.

Fun Fact: Yahweh appears in the Old Testament more than 6,800 times. It appears in every book except Ester, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs.

BSF Study Questions John’s Gospel: The Truth Lesson 24, Day 4: John 18:39-19:7

Summary of John 18:39-19:7

Pilate bowed to political pressure and custom, allowing the Jewish people to decide if they wanted to execute Jesus or not. They did.

Jesus was flogged and had a crown of thorns placed on his head. He was clothed in a purple robe and beaten.

Pilate told the people that Jesus was innocent. But, the Jewish leaders and the people wanted Jesus crucified. Still, Pilate does not want to kill Jesus. But, the Jewish leaders insist.

BSF Study Questions John’s Gospel: The Truth Lesson 24, Day 4: John 18:39-19:7

10a)  “I find no basis for a charge against him. But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”

b) They asked for Jesus to be crucified.

11a) He was flogged. A crown of thorns was placed on his head. He was beaten.

b) I think it got the Jewish people even more determined to crucify Jesus since Pilate was trying to stop it.

12a) With shouts of crucify. They demanded Jesus be killed because he claimed to be the Son of God.

b) With love, compassion, and the truth.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions John’s Gospel: The Truth Lesson 24, Day 4: John 18:39-19:7

This whole scene is sad. Pilate being a weak leader. The Jews calling for an innocent man’s death. Human sin and man’s fallen nature can be so vile.

End Notes BSF Study Questions John’s Gospel: The Truth Lesson 24, Day 4: John 18:39-19:7

Pilate tries to release Jesus, but the crowd says no. Calling Jesus the King of the Jews was intended to get the people to release Jesus.

Barnabas was considered a terrorist and opposed the Romans. Therefore, he was a hero in the eyes of the Jews.

Next, Pilate whips Jesus and mocks him, hoping the crowd will set him free after that.

Being whipped or scourged often killed people. Yet, Pilate hoped this would satisfy the Jewish people and have Jesus set free. Ironic.

No leader wore a painful crown of thorns. The purple robe (only Roman leaders wore purple) was meant to mock Jesus.

Pilate’s role was to free Jesus. But, he did not.

Once more, Pilate presents Jesus to the crowd, bloodied and beaten. This sight did nothing to soften the Jews’ hearts towards Jesus.

Pilate tells the people to look at Jesus. The religious leaders’ cry to crucify Jesus was pure hatred of God.

Pilate says Jesus is innocent for the third time.

BSF Study Questions People of the Promise: Kingdom Divided Lesson 24, Day 4: Zephaniah 1:1-3:8

SUMMARY OF ZEPHANIAH 1:1-3:8

Zephaniah warns of judgment against Judah and Jerusalem, as well as the judgment of the surrounding nations.

God will judge the entire planet on the day of the Lord (Second Coming of Christ). God will destroy all idol worship, punish the officials and the king’s sons, and all who fill the temple with violence and deceit.

Judah is asked to repent. All of the surrounding nations will face judgment, including Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Cush, and Assyria.

Jerusalem has been given chances to repent, but still does not.

BSF Study Questions People of the Promise: Kingdom Divided Lesson 24, Day 4: Zephaniah 1:1-3:8

9) During the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah. Josiah entered into a new covenant with God and issued reforms after reading the Book of the Law, which was found. He wiped out pagan cults and removed idolatry from the temple.

10)

Zephaniah 1:2-3: “I will sweep away everything from the face of the earth,” declares the Lord.“I will sweep away both man and beast; I will sweep away the birds in the sky and the fish in the sea—    and the idols that cause the wicked to stumble. He will destroy all mankind on the face of the earth.

Zephaniah 1:4-5: “I will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all who live in Jerusalem. I will destroy every remnant of Baal worship in this place, the very names of the idolatrous priests— 5 those who bow down on the roofs to worship the starry host, those who bow down and swear by the Lord and who also swear by Molek,[b]

Zephaniah 1:12-16: God will punish those who are complacent. Their wealth will be plundered, their houses demolished.
Though they build houses, they will not live in them. though they plant vineyards, they will not drink the wine.” That day will be a day of distress, anguish, trouble, ruin, darkness, gloom, clouds, blackness, trumpets, and battle cries.

11) Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Cush, and Assyria. God judges both believers and unbelievers. Everyone will be accountable to God for their actions.

12) They are disobedient, oppressors, rebellious, and defiled. They don’t trust God nor do they draw near to God. The officials and rulers are corrupt. The prophets are unprincipled. They are treacherous people. The priests do violence to the law. The people are unrepentant for their actions.

13) I think people today don’t think about God’s judgment and live their lives ignoring God. Or, they sin and believe that doesn’t matter because God will forgive them. This is because people don’t believe in God or they only believe the parts of God’s word they want to believe.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions People of the Promise: Kingdom Divided Lesson 24, Day 4: Zephaniah 1:1-3:8

Love this lesson! Love the tender judgment of God and His constant call to have His people repent.

End Notes BSF Study Questions People of the Promise: Kingdom Divided Lesson 24, Day 4: Zephaniah 1:1-3:8

Zephaniah preaches what the other prophets did: he condemned the people of God for their sins and predicted their coming judgment. However, he also predicted the day of the Lord for a small remnant. Zephaniah was the last of the prophets, so by now, he is merely repeating the others warnings of judgment.

Zephaniah promised judgment to idolaters, royalty, merchants, and the complacent. The judgment will be intense, and it is certain.

Fun Fact: The Day of the Lord is used more than 25 times in the Bible.

Now, is the day of the man; the Day of the Lord is when God reigns again on earth.

God calls his people to repent while there is still time.

All the nations will be judged: the Philistines, Moabites, Ammonites, Cush (Ethiopia), and Assyria.

Jerusalem is wicked, but God is righteous. God offers everyone a chance to humble themselves and repent. They offer a way of salvation for those who seek Him.

God speaks to cubearer and baker in a dream www.atozmomm.com

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 24, Day 4: Genesis 40:1-8

Summary of Genesis 40:1-8:

Pharaoh’s cupbearer and baker offended Pharaoh and were put in the same prison as Joseph. Both men had a dream that they could not interpret. Joseph saw that they were sad and asked them why. They said they could not interpret their dreams, so Joseph told them God could and to tell them the dreams.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 24, Day 4: Genesis 40:1-8

11) Joseph noticed that they cupbearer and the baker were sad and asked them why. They said they could not interpret their dreams, so Joseph told them God could and to tell them the dreams. This shows that Joseph knew the men well enough to know when they were dejected and cared enough to ask and to offer help.

12) My family. Be more present with them, ask more questions, listen more.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 24, Day 4: Genesis 40:1-8

I’m wondering about the repeated phrases here I never noticed before: the repetition of their positions and the fact they were in prison. No word in the Bible is wasted, so there has to be some reason here.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 24, Day 4: Genesis 40:1-8

The cupbearer was responsible for tasting all of the drink and food before Pharaoh ate it to make sure it was not poisonous. The baker cooked Pharaoh’s food. Scholars believe there was a plot against Pharaoh, and these two were accused. However, the cupbearer and the baker were in prison for God’s reasons and plans.

Note how Potiphar, who is the captain of the guard, assigned these men to Joseph. Potiphar probably believes Joseph is innocent as indicated by this action. (Genesis 39:1).

Here’s we see Joseph’s heart is like Jesus’s. He helps others and pays attention to their feelings. Most people would not have cared about the sadness of these two men. After all, they were all leading desperate lives as prisoners, so why care about others?

Joseph had a sincere desire to help these men feel better about their dreams. He knew God used dreams to foretell the future like the dreams God had given him.  (Genesis 37:5-11), Note how it’s God who knows. Joseph takes no credit for these dreams.

God Uses Dreams To Foretell the Future in the Bible

Fun Fact: The Bible records God speaking to almost twice as many nonbelievers as believers. God uses all people in His plans the world.

Not all dreams are prophetic (Ecclesiastes 5:35:7). and some are from false prophets (Deuteronomy 13:1-5Jeremiah 23:25-28).

We know God speaks to us in the Bible for sure. He can speak to us individually as well in other ways.

BSF Study Questions Genesis Lesson 24, Day 4: Genesis 32:20-32

Summary of passage:  Jacob sends pacifying gifts to Esau ahead of him while he stayed behind.  He sent his family and possessions across the River Jabbok.  He was left alone and he wrestled with a man all night.  The man touched the socket of Jacob’s hip as they wrestled.  Jacob asked for a blessing from the man before he let him go.  The man asked his name and then changed it to Israel because he had struggled with God and men had overcome.

He was blessed by the man and the place was called Peniel.  Jacob was limping from his battle.

Questions:

9)  He hasn’t yet fully trusted in God.  He hasn’t submitted his will to God’s.  He hasn’t surrendered nor died to self.

10)  We are told Jacob struggled with the angel and overcame him.  Jacob then wept and begged for the angel’s favor.  We are told this took place near Bethel.

11)  The man was God in the person of Jesus for we know God himself never appeared to man (Exodus 33:20; John 1:18; John 6:46).  Verse 28 says it clearly when the man speaks and tells Jacob “you have struggled with God”

12)  Ok.  A bit presumptuous, isn’t this question?  No one “forces” God to do anything.  So just knowing that one fact about God you know the answer to this question.

Jacob is accepting God’s blessing.

13)  When we fight His will for our life.

Conclusions:  Like Day 2, I’m left with mixed feelings on this lesson (as you may have been able to tell by their brevity). This is a very famous passage in the Bible.  My Bible heading is “Jacob Wrestles With God” and it seems as though BSF focuses too much effort on getting us to realize this is God (the obvious) instead of focusing on the end results and how Jacob needed God to show up in his life again (as I do right now)–and the not-so-obvious.

I would have preferred more questions like 13 instead of like 11 and 12.  My opinion, of course.  This passage has such depth and meaning as it shows how we all wrestle with God until we finally submit to Him.  Instead, we are left hanging.  A missed opportunity by BSF.

We all need to surrender our will and our self-reliance (hard to do in America) to God.  It is God’s way on His “Way of Holiness(Isaiah 35:8) or the other highway.  God must be our center.  God must be in control.  God must conquer us.  When we are defeated by this world and all that happens to us, we weep to God for His blessings as Jacob did.  We come crawling to Him, broken.  Right where we need to be in order to move forward into the Promised Land.  As Jacob shows us.

“I will not let you go unless you bless me”.  Jacob grasps the Lord with all his strength, knowing how much he needs God.  We must do the same.  All the time.  Hold onto God and never let go.

Jacob’s enemy is not Esau.  It is self.  It is death to self that Jacob is struggling against.

The name change signifies the passing of Jacob’s old life into his new life of trusting God 100%.  Of being ALL in.

God graced Jacob with a limp as a reminder for the rest of his life to turn to Him.

“Why do you ask my name?” God asks.  For we all should know His name.

Analysis of Genesis 32 and Jacob:  You can see why Jacob needed to wrestle with God from this passage.  It starts out with God’s army camped next to Jacob.  Still, he is afraid.  Then Jacob prays to God.  Still, he is afraid.  Next, God wrestles with Jacob. Finally, he surrenders.

Good lesson for all of us how God never gives up on our unbelief and how He does whatever it takes to get us to SEE and turn and fall to the ground at his awesomeness.
