BSF Study Questions Romans: From Guilt to Grace Lesson 10 Day 3: Reread Romans 6:1-4

October 27, 2026October 10, 2026 by atozmom, posted in BSF Romans: From Guilt to Grace 2026/2027

Summary of Romans 6:1-4

We should not go on sinning. We were raised from the dead just as Christ was and through him we may live a new life.

We cannot continue sinning, for we died to sin. United with Christ’s death and burial through baptism, we are raised to walk in new life.

7) Water baptism serves as an outward, physical sign pointing to the inward, invisible reality of a believer’s spiritual transformation and total union with God.

  • Union with Christ’s Death and Resurrection (Colossians 2:11-12; Galatians 3:26-27): Baptism visually represents a “spiritual circumcision” where the old sinful nature is decisively cut away. It signifies being buried with Christ and subsequently raised to new life through faith in God’s power. Believers are entirely enveloped in Christ’s identity, having “clothed themselves” with Him.

  • Cleansing and Forgiveness (Acts 2:38): It acts as a public seal of a believer’s repentance and the forgiveness of sins, illustrating that their past transgressions have been washed away by God’s grace.

  • Incorporation into the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13): Water baptism points to the unifying work of the Holy Spirit, who immerses every believer into one singular spiritual family—the global Church—breaking down all earthly, societal, and ethnic divisions.

  • Immersion into the Trinity (Matthew 28:19-20): Being baptized “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” demonstrates a total allegiance and submission to the triune God, marking the formal initiation into lifelong discipleship.

  • Internal Empowerment (Acts 1:5): Just as a person is physically immersed in water, the act points to the greater reality of being baptized with the Holy Spirit. This signifies the permanent, internal indwelling of God’s presence, empowering the believer for their new life.

8a) We died to sin when we were baptized into Christ and his sacrifice gave us new life. Believers died to sin through spiritual union with Jesus Christ in baptism. By sharing in his death, their former enslavement to sin is permanently and completely broken.

b) I want to sin less each and every day. I find myself avoiding sin and sinful situations. I live for Jesus and therefore live out the life he wants for me, not the life I want for myself.

Believers experience this death and step into a new life through a radical change in spiritual representation and identity.

Experiencing the Death to Sin Believers experience death to sin not through their own effort, but by being legally and spiritually united with Christ’s finished work:

  • Changing Lineages (Romans 5:12-21): Humanity originally fell under the dominion of sin and death through Adam’s disobedience. Believers experience death to sin by being transferred out of Adam’s doomed lineage and into Christ’s lineage of grace. The grip of sin is broken because believers are no longer represented by Adam, but by Christ.

  • Substitutionary Death (2 Corinthians 5:14): Paul argues that because “one died for all, therefore all died.” When a person places their faith in Jesus, they are credited with His death. The old self, bound to the penalty and power of sin, is considered legally dead.

Living the New Life With the old self dead, 2 Corinthians 5:15-21 describes the new life as an entirely different reality characterized by a new purpose, standing, and mission:

  • A Complete Re-creation: The believer is fundamentally remade. As Paul writes, “the old has gone, the new is here!”

  • Living for Christ: The resurrection empowers a shift in core motivation. Those who are alive spiritually “should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.”

  • Walking in Righteousness: Because God made Christ “to be sin for us,” believers now embody “the righteousness of God.” Rather than living under condemnation, they “reign in life” through God’s abundant grace (Romans 5:17).

  • Acting as Ambassadors: The new life is actively missional. Believers are entrusted with the “ministry of reconciliation,” serving as Christ’s representatives to plead with a broken world to be reconciled to God.

c) The power of Jesus in the form of the Holy Spirit.  Sin no longer is in control. We are God’s instruments to live a holy life that He wants for us.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Romans: From Guilt to Grace Lesson 10, Day 3: Romans 6:1-4

I love this analogy with baptism! The idea that as we entered the water, we were sinners and as we rose, we were a new creation into the arms of Jesus. So, so powerful!

End Notes BSF Study Questions Romans: From Guilt to Grace Lesson 10, Day 3: Romans 6:1-4

We die to sin when we accept Jesus’s death on the cross. So, why would you want to sin evermore?

Baptism means to be immersed or overwhelmed by something.

Here, Paul says we are immersed in Jesus. When we were baptized, we were buried. When we rose up from the water, we were born again.

Essentially, there is no way to accept Jesus into your heart and not come out on the other side completely changed. We died and rose with Jesus!

END NOTES SUMMARIZED

Paul’s argument in Romans 6:1-4 addresses a dangerous misunderstanding of his teaching on grace. Because he previously stated that where sin increased, grace abounded all the more (Romans 5:20), he anticipates critics arguing that his gospel encourages people to keep sinning so they can receive more grace.

Here is the breakdown of his counterargument in these four verses:

  • The Absurdity of Abusing Grace (Verses 1-2): Paul violently rejects the premise that grace is a license to sin with the emphatic phrase, “By no means!” (or “God forbid!”). He establishes a fundamental truth: a believer has “died to sin.” This does not mean believers are incapable of sinning, but rather that their fundamental relationship to sin’s authority has been severed. Just as a dead person no longer responds to physical stimuli, a person dead to sin is no longer enslaved to its demands.

  • Identification Through Baptism (Verse 3): Paul uses the imagery of baptism to explain how this death to sin occurs. Being “baptized into Christ Jesus” means being immersed into a profound spiritual union with him. Because believers are united with Christ, they share intimately in his history—specifically, they are baptized into his death. The penalty for sin was paid on the cross, and believers are credited with that death.

  • Burial and Resurrection to New Life (Verse 4): Paul brings the metaphor to its logical completion. Burial signifies the absolute finality of death; the old self is decisively put in the grave. However, the purpose of this spiritual death and burial is entirely forward-looking. Just as the glory of the Father raised Jesus from the grave, believers are spiritually resurrected right now so they can walk in “newness of life.” The focus shifts from the removal of sin to the empowerment of a transformed, holy life.

Conclusion

The core message of this passage is that the gospel is not merely a transaction for the forgiveness of sins, but a radical transformation of human identity. Grace does not leave a person where it found them. By uniting believers to the death and resurrection of Jesus, God permanently breaks the dominion of sin and supplies the resurrection power necessary to live a transformed, obedient life.
