BSF Study Questions Romans: From Guilt to Grace Lesson 9 Day 5: Romans 5:20-21

October 22, 2026October 10, 2026 by atozmom, posted in BSF Romans: From Guilt to Grace 2026/2027

Summary of Romans 5:20-21

The Law entered to expose multiplying sin, but where sin increased, God’s grace abounded all the more—reigning through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus.

BSF Study Questions Romans: From Guilt to Grace Lesson 9, Day 5: Romans 5:20-21

11) The Law increases the trespass by explicitly defining sin and provoking our rebellious nature to desire the forbidden (Romans 7:7–8). In daily life, rules expose hidden self-will and pride, showing our inability to earn righteousness and driving us directly to rely on Christ’s superabounding grace (Galatians 3:24).

12) The two reigns are Sin’s Reign in Death and Grace’s Reign in Righteousness.

Those in Sin’s kingdom remain trapped under darkness, guilt, and eternal judgment. Those transferred into Grace’s kingdom (Colossians 1:13–14) receive redemption, the forgiveness of sins, justified standing, and eternal life through Jesus Christ.

13) God keeps me from sin every day. He does so by reminding me of my incredible blessings in this life.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Romans: From Guilt to Grace Lesson 9, Day 5: Romans 5:20-21

If we can just remember that Christ’s sacrifice is supreme and we are saved, we’ll be on the right track!

End Notes BSF Study Questions Romans: From Guilt to Grace Lesson 9, Day 5: Romans 5:20-21

The law makes a contrast with God’s holy standard. The law makes sin abound because man, by nature, wants to fight against constraints upon us, such as good and evil.

God is so great that He is much greater than sin and the law. His grace is greater by leaps and bounds! We gain a life of grace in Jesus.

We will study in Romans 7 the idea more that the law was given so that our trespasses might increase.

END NOTES SUMMARIZED

Paul brings his grand exposition of justification and federal headship to its climax by addressing the purpose of the Mosaic Law and the ultimate triumph of God’s grace.

1. The Purpose of the Law: Increasing the Trespass (v. 20a)

  • A Secondary Entry: Paul uses the phrase “brought in” (pareisēlthen), indicating that the Law was an addition to human history, not the primary solution to sin.

  • Exposing and Magnifying Sin: The Law was not given to save or make people righteous; rather, it entered to expose humanity’s latent sinfulness, transforming implicit sin into explicit, conscious transgressions (“that the trespass might increase”).

2. Superabounding Grace (Super-Abundance) (v. 20b)

  • Grace Overpowers Sin: Where sin multiplied and reached its peak, God’s grace did not merely match it—it hyper-abounded (hypereperisseusen).

  • Infinite Divine Reserve: No matter how deep or widespread human sin becomes, God’s grace in Christ proves infinitely deeper and more powerful, completely overwhelming the devastation of sin.

3. The New Reign: From Death to Eternal Life (v. 21)

  • The Shift in Monarchs: Paul contrasts two opposing kingdoms. Previously, sin reigned in death, holding humanity under tyrannical power.

  • The Triumph of Grace: Now, grace reigns through righteousness. Grace is not passive tolerance; it is a sovereign, ruling force that secures justified standing for believers and culminates in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Conclusion

Romans 5:20–21 serves as the triumphant crescendo to the entire chapter. The Law was never designed to deliver humanity; it served to highlight the depth of human sin so that God’s mercy might shine brighter.

The overarching conclusion is that sin and death no longer have the final word. Where sin reached its absolute worst, God’s grace surpassed it entirely. Grace now reigns supreme, declaring believers righteous and securing eternal life solely through the person and finished work of Jesus Christ.
