BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 21, Day 3: Matthew 20:17-34

map of Jericho healing blind men matthew 20 www.atozmomm.comSUMMARY OF MATTHEW 20:17-34

Jesus is heading to Jerusalem for his destiny of dying on the cross. He once again tells his disciples he will be betrayed, condemned to death, mocked, flogged, and crucified. Then, he will rise again on the third day.

The mother of Zebedee’s sons (James and John) asked Jesus to place her two sons on his right and left in the kingdom of heaven. Jesus responds that he cannot grant that request and only God can and they have already been prepared. The other disciples were indignant over this request. Jesus sais that to be great you must serve and to be first you must be your slave since he came to serve and not be served, as well as give his life for many.

Two blind men on the road outside of Jericho heard Jesus pass. They asked Jesus to have mercy on them. The crowd tried to silence them, but they merely cried louder. Jesus had compassion on them and granted their request to see again. They then followed him.

BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 21, Day 3: Matthew 20:17-34

6) I’m assuming the disciples probably don’t believe Jesus will die. He is telling them to ensure they understand that he will die.

7a) The mother of Zebedee’s sons (James and John) asked Jesus to place her two sons on his right and left in the kingdom of heaven. Since Jesus told them they would sit on thrones, Zebedee’s mother is asking they sit on thrones next to Jesus.

b) Jesus responds that he cannot grant that request and only God can and they have already been prepared. Those spots are reserved for others.

c) The other disciples were indignant over this request. They probably wanted these coveted spots, too.

d) Jesus came to serve, not to be served, meaning sitting next to him should not be their goal at all. It’s to serve others, too.

8 ) It’s always hard to serve others, I think. It goes against our selfish nature. It challenges me to look for more opportunities to serve, rather than be served.

9a) Jesus came to serve and so he did when asked to heal.

b) To keep praying for healing, for others, and keep asking for mercy.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 21, Day 3: Matthew 20:17-34

I love how if you are denied, you just shout louder. If you are not heard, you keep trying to be heard until you are heard. This is a great lesson in our lives with relationships, career, and more. You keep trying and never give up, especially if it’s something for which you believe you are right.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 21, Day 3: Matthew 20:17-34

Jesus was headed to Jerusalem for Passover. The law of Moses required all Israelites to attend Passover.

We are not told about any of the disciples reactions here when Jesus spoke of his impending death. Did they really hear Jesus? Or did they dismiss his words?

Jesus was very specific about his death, perhaps trying to get it through to his disciples that he will die soon.

The mother of Zebedee’s sons was with Jesus throughout his ministry. We see her mentioned that they followed Jesus from Galilee and were at Jesus’s crucifixion. Presumably, she was a follower, too. (Matthew 27:56).

Who will have the best spots? The mother of Zebedee asks for her sons to have them. Traditionally, those on the right and left hand are the most important and even share in power, prestige, and wealth of the ruler.

Jesus has said they have thrones. Just who will get the best thrones is the question here.

James would be the first martyr amongst the disciples, and John would live a long life and write many books in the Bible.

The fact they are even asking shows us they still don’t get the kingdom Jesus will bring. His kingdom is for others. The disciples repeatedly show they don’t quite get the kingdom Jesus is bringing. It’s not an earthly one, but one in heaven.

The other 10 disciples were probably mad because they didn’t ask first!

True greatness is service. Period.

Healing the Two Blind Men

The men ignored the crowd and instead screamed louder. We must ignore the noise around us, too, and listen for Jesus all around us as he passes by.

Obviously, Jesus was on a mission. Yet, he had compassion, stopped, and healed these men.

Jesus asks them a question he asks all of us every day, “What do you want me to do for you?”

God knows our needs, but He still wants us to ask Him to fulfill them.

BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 15, Day 5: Matthew 14:25-36

December 9, 2021December 4, 2021 by atozmom, posted in BSF Matthew 2021/2022

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 14:25-36

During the fourth watch, Jesus walked on the lake to his disciples. They thought he was a ghost and were afraid. Jesus identified himself and said don’t be afraid. Peter then asked Jesus to tell him to come to him, which Jesus did. He walked towards Jesus but was afraid again. Peter then began to sink. He asked Jesus to save him, which he did. Jesus told Peter he had little faith in him. They all got in the boat, the wind died down, and they worshipped Jesus, believing he was the Son of God.

They landed at Gennesaret. The people recognized Jesus, and they spread word. All the sick came and begged to be healed by touching the edge of his cloak. And so they were healed.

BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 15, Day 5: Matthew 14:25-36

12) They thought he was a ghost and were afraid. Jesus tells them to take courage and not be afraid. Jesus always wants to comfort us and meet our needs.

13a) He has faith and then it wanes. That’s like all of our faith and very human. It’s imperfect, and that’s okay.

b) I have peace when I rely on God. When I rely on myself, I have doubts.

14a) It revealed he was indeed the Son of God, that he had power over all the earth and its elements, and that he was there for them.

b) Jesus proved nothing was impossible for him, from feeding multitudes with very little to calming seas and walking on water. The disciples probably had no doubt whatsoever who Jesus was, which was important before Jesus died.

15) Many. Lately, with this last move. My job. Hard to see the purpose though.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 15, Day 5: Matthew 14:25-36

I love the whole idea of walking on water. I want to be able to do that and maybe that’s why Peter asked Jesus to call him — he thought it would be cool, too.

map of genneseret www.atozmomm.com

Great read here!

End Notes BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 15, Day 5: Matthew 14:25-36

The fourth watch was between 3 and 6 am. Mark (Mark 6:47-52) reveals that the disciples had been struggling against the waves all night.

Jesus could have just appeared in the boat, but he came to them in a way to grow their faith. Everything God does is for us.

Jesus takes us to places we’ve never been, and then he’s there to help us.

We have no idea Peter’s motivation for wanting to walk on water, but the disciples could do miracles, too,(Matthew 10:1) and Peter may just have wanted to try it.

When fear creeps in, we begin to sink.

Peter knew Jesus was there and cried out to him, as we all should.

We should examine why we doubt Jesus, so we can grow in faith.

Fun Fact: This is one of the first times Jesus is openly acknowledged as the Son of God and that the disciples worshipped him as such.

John tells us (John 6:21) that the boat was immediately whisked to shore after Jesus and Peter stepped in. Gennesaret was a region, not a town on the western side of the Sea of Galilee just south of Capernaum.

God uses physical objects, such as Jesus’s hem, hankerchiefs  (Acts 19:11-12), and even a shadow (Acts 5:15), to heal. God offers man mercy by providing physical items we can believe in.

Our Takeaways

  • Doubting God is human nature
  • Coming back to God is the key

BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 15, Day 4: Matthew 14:22-24

December 8, 2021December 4, 2021 by atozmom, posted in BSF Matthew 2021/2022

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 14:22-24

After everyone was fed, Jesus made the disciples go on ahead of him in the boat on the Sea of Galilee. He dismissed the crowd and then went up a mountainside to pray alone. A wind had come up against the boat.

BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 15, Day 4: Matthew 14:22-24

10a) The people began to call Jesus the Prophet. They wanted to make him king by force so he withdrew to the mountain by himself.

b)

For His disciples: he wanted to protect his disciples from an unruly crowd.

For the crowd: he wanted to escape the crowd and not get their hopes up about his earthly kingdom

For Jesus himself: he wanted to talk to His father alone and escape the hubbub, too.

11a) Jesus intentionally sends us into the storms in our lives so we can learn from them and grow closer to God.

b) I do not like living where I am living, and I’m trying to figure out how to move as quickly as possible. It’s an extreme let down here, but I’m trying to find God’s plan for me here until I can move again.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 15, Day 4: Matthew 14:22-24

I love how there can be so much packed into three verses in the Bible. We get more information when we read the same story in different Gospels. I love how Jesus needed to be alone as much as we sometimes need to be alone.

Great read!

End Notes BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 15, Day 4: Matthew 14:22-24

Jesus made his disciples leave for many reasons:

  • To escape the crowd who may have become exceptionally needy after this miracle
  • To ensure the messianic outcry did not burgeon out of control (John 6:15)
  • To be alone with His Father
  • To rest
  • To pray

Jesus needed to be with God and pray, as we all do in the midst of our daily lives and service.

Jesus controlled the storm he sent to the disciples in the boat. He let them row for many hours — till they point they had to rely on him. Perhaps Jesus was praying for them, too, on the mountainside with God.

BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 15, Day 3: Matthew 14:13-21

December 7, 2021December 4, 2021 by atozmom, posted in BSF Matthew 2021/2022

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 14:13-21

Hearing upon John the Baptist’s death, Jesus withdrew by boat to be alone. However, the crowds followed him. When Jesus landed, he had compassion on the people and healed the sick. When it was getting dark, Jesus’s disciples asked Jesus to send the crowds away so they could feed themselves. Jesus said the crowds could stay and asked the disciples to feed them. They said all they had was five loaves of bread and two fish.

Jesus had the loaves and the fish brought to him. Jesus then gave thanks for the food and broke the bread. The disciples distributed it. Everyone ate, and they had 12 basketfulls left over. 5,000 men ate in addition to women and children.

BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 15, Day 3: Matthew 14:13-21

7a) He wanted to grieve the loss of his friend alone, as well as pray for John’s soul.

b) There are still obligations that must be met despite grief.

8a) By turning what they thought impossible (feeding thousands of people) into the possible — and with leftovers to boot!

b) God loves to provide for us abundantly. If we ask him for the impossible, He can do it, and we should expect that as well as to exceed our expectations.

9) Jesus had compassion on the people and personally sacrificed to heal and feed them. He performed miracle after miracle, taking care of human needs and for humans only.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 15, Day 3: Matthew 14:13-21

I love how God gives you more than what you ask for in this world. I need to remember this when I become down in life.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Matthew Lesson 15, Day 3: Matthew 14:13-21

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

We will begin to see Jesus focus his ministry on growing the disciples’ faith.

I think most of us cannot fathom the depth of compassion Jesus had/has for his people. He fed the multitude not because he had to or it was expected, but because he wanted to.

Jesus challenged the disciples to have faith and to have compassion on others.

The bread and the fish were indeed from a little boy as told in (John 6:9). The disciples had no food as they relied on others to have compassion on them. Ironic, right?

Bible scholars suggest that this was a celebratory event. Perhaps Jesus was thinking this was a great way to remember John the Baptist.

Jesus thanked God for the food and again demonstrated his entire power over all of creation and the world.

God gave above and beyond to the people, which is what He wants to do for us.

Note there were 12 extra baskets of bread, one for each of the disciples. This miracle was about feeding people, but it was just as much for the disciples as for the people. Jesus needed to grow their faith in him as the ultimate provider of all things.

Bible scholars suggest the total number of people to be between 15,000 and 20,000.

Fun Fact: This story is recorded in all four Gospels, showing it’s importance as a miracle.

Many believed that the Messiah would restore manna. Here is that manna.

Jesus let the disciples be a part of the miracle, too, even though he didn’t have to. We are all a part of God’s plan, whether we know it or not.

Our Takeaways:

  • Give God what you have, no matter how little
  • God provides for all of our needs abundantly
  • Trust in His provision
  • Thank God for what you have

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 29, Day 2: Genesis 49:1-28

March 15, 2021March 14, 2021 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary of Genesis 49:1-28:

Jacob calls his sons together to bless them and tell them their future before he dies. He tells Reuben he will no longer excel because of his defilement of his father’s bed. Simeon and Levi will be scattered in Israel. They will no longer be leaders as punishment for the slaughter at Shechem.

Judah’s brothers will praise him and bow down to him. The scepter will not leave Judah’s hand until it comes to whom it belongs and obedience is his (reference to Jesus).  His (Jesus) robes will be washed in blood, his eyes darker than wine, his teeth whiter than milk.

Zebulun will live by the seashore and become a haven for ships. Issachar will submit to forced labor. Dan will provide justice for his people. Gad will be attacked, but he will attack back. Asher will have rich food. Naphtali is free.

Joseph is a fruitful vine that overflows. Enemies attack, but Joseph remains steady because of God who blesses him. His blessings rest on him, the “prince among his brothers.”

Benjamin devours and plunders.

These were the 12 Tribes of Israel.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 29, Day 2: Genesis 49:1-28

3) Benjamin’s is to me. He is like a ravenous wolf who devours his prey and divides his plunder. Since Benjamin is the youngest, I picture him as the most innocent, not as this is painted.

4a) Their descendents are punished because of them. Reuben he will no longer excel because of his defilement of his father’s bed. Simeon and Levi will be scattered in Israel. They will no longer be leaders as punishment for the slaughter at Shechem.

b) God holds people responsible for their actions, and sin can be passed down and perpetrated into next generations, which is why being a parent is so hard as we try not to pass our sins onto ur children.

5) Judah’s brothers will praise him and bow down to him. The scepter will not leave Judah’s hand until it comes to whom it belongs and obedience is his (reference to Jesus).  His (Jesus) robes will be washed in blood, his eyes darker than wine, his teeth whiter than milk.

6) God can do whatever He wants. He is God. It is not on us to question Him, His authority, or what He does.

7) It would take many pages to type this one out. Suffice it to say that every choice brings you to where you are at today, and it is all in God’s plan to honor and bless you in that way. Nothing should be regretted You are here because God has let you be here.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 29, Day 2: Genesis 49:1-28

This lesson was much condensed from last time we did this study and was much improved. It’s interesting to me how sin is perpetuated and many people don’t have kids because of this fact. But there is nothing you can do about it. All you can do is your best.

fish photo www.atozmomm.com

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 29, Day 2: Genesis 49:1-28

You can safely say that many of these are not blessings but prophecies (unsure how telling your kid you won’t be a leader, you will be scattered, and you won’t excel is a blessing).

Fun Fact: This is the first prophecy spoken by a man (not God) in the Bible.

Note that Jacob refers to himself by both names (Jacob and Israel). He is recognizing both sides of himself (the good and the bad here).

Reuben’s sin:  Genesis 35:22. No one of note came from Reuben’s line (Matthew 19:30). No king, prophet, or judge would come from Reuben. His tribe was the first to be conquered by the Assyrian and Babylonians, and he would settle east of the Jordan, which was not well fortified.

Simeon and Levi’s sin: (Genesis 34:25-29). Forgiven sins can still haunt us. Their sin is anger and retribution in anger.  This is not a godly anger Ephesians 4:26), but an ungodly one.  Ephesians 4:31)

Simeon’s tribe shrank when they wandered in the wilderness after the parting of the Red Sea. They went from the 3rd largest (Numbers 1:23), to the smallest (Numbers 26:14) in 40 years. They had to share their piece of the Promise Land with Judah  (Joshua 19:1). They would be enveloped into Judah’s tribe.

Levi, however, gained blessing despite his sin and was chosen to be the line of the priesthood because of their faithfulness during the Golden Calf episode (Exodus 32:26-28). They gained God as their inheritance (Joshua 13:33). It pays to draw near to God when you’ve been reprimanded by Him. However, they were scattered as priests had to live all over Israel in order to preach to the people.

Judah made many mistakes and committed many sins (like all of us),  (Genesis 37:26).,(Genesis 38:26),,(Genesis 38:18), but he had good in his heart. (Genesis 44:18-34). God’s grace is good.

Because Judah inherited the ruling position, the kings of Israel (including Jesus, the ultimate King) would come from him. Revelation 5:5, Lions in scripture symbolize power, victory, and dominion. His tribe would prosper.

Shiloh is another name for Jesus, meaning “he whose right it is.” David partially fulfilled this prophecy, but it was Jesus a full 1600 years later that sealed the deal.

Zebulon settled next to the Mediterranean Sea and the Sea of Galilee — both places for ships. His tribe is noted in the Bible for being faithful to David (1 Chronicles 12:33). His name means “honored dwelling.”

Issachar was a large tribe, but they became slaves. Numbers 26

bear picture ww.atozmomm.com

From the tribe of Dan came the judge, Samson (Judges 13:2). Dan menas “he judged.”

The Bible records the tribe of Dan as one of sin and idolatry.  (Judges 18:30). (1 Kings 12:26-30), (Amos 8:14).

Some Bible scholars believe the Antichrist will come from the tribe of Dan (based on Daniel 11:37 and Jeremiah 8:16).

Dan is left out of the listing of tribes in Revelation 7:5-8 B nor in 1 Chronicles 2-9. but Dan is the first tribe listed in Ezekiel’s list (Ezekiel 48).

Jacob calls out for Jesus (the Hebrew word for salvation is “yeshuwah.”). Cool, isn’t it?

Gad helped David (1 Chronicles 12:14). They settled on the east side of the Jordan and had to fend off constant attacks.

Asher was known as a land of luxury Deuteronomy 33:24, near Phoenicia. Anna, a prophetess from Asher, saw Jesus (Luke 2:36-38)

Naphtali’s land bordered the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus spent much of his time (Matthew 4:12-16)

Joseph had already received his blessing. Perhaps this was a repeat for the benefit of the other brothers Genesis 48. God gave Joseph the strength of will for the bow. Joseph’s tribes of Mannsseh and Ephraim were some of the biggest. Joseph overcame much.

Note the 5 Titles Jacob calls God:

  1. Mighty One of Jacob
  2. Shepherd
  3. Rock of Israel
  4. Your father’s God
  5. Almighty

Benjamin’s tribe will be one of great warriors: Ehud (Judges 3:15-23), Saul (1 Samuel 9:1, 14:47-52), and Paul (Acts 8:1-3).  Judges 19 and 20.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 27, Day 2: Genesis 45:1-15

March 1, 2021February 28, 2021 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary of Genesis 45:1-15:

Joseph sent all of his attendants away, and he revealed himself to his brothers. He wept so loudly that Pharaoh’s household was informed. His brothers were scared, thinking retribution would be coming. Instead, Joseph explained to them that this was God’s plan to send Joseph ahead so that he could save lives and preserve a remnant for the future. God sent him to Egypt and has made him lord over Pharaoh’s entire household and ruler of all of Egypt.

Joseph tells his brothers to go back to return to his father, Jacob, and bring him here. Bring everything they have, and they shall live in Goshen near him. He tells them he will provide for them; otherwise, they will not make it for there is still 5 more years of the famine left. He hugged and kissed Benjamin. He kissed all his brothers, and they talked.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 27, Day 2: Genesis 45:1-15

3a) He tried to calm their fears that he would enact retribution by explaining that God had sent him to Egypt, not them. It communicated love for them and forgiveness, not evil or revenge.

b) Joseph gives God all of the credit always. He is able to see God’s plan in his circumstances. Although we don’t know the future like Joseph, we should be able to see God’s purposes in our lives.

c) At first they were terrified, and probably a little shocked. It had been over 20 years, and they thought he was dead. They probably still felt guilty for what they had done and how they had lied to Jacob. They probably all thought they deserved retribution.

4) The hurt and the pain make it hard to forgive. Prayer, God, and remembering how God forgives us when we don’t deserve it.

5) There is always hope for reconciliation for family. Look at Joseph. Odds are, our hurts from family members don’t include them trying to kill us and selling us into slavery. If Joseph can overcome all that pain and still see God’s hand in it, then so we should be able to overcome that of our family members.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 27, Day 2: Genesis 45:1-15

It must be so cool to know the future as Joseph did. This reference to the remnant reminded me of Revelation. How amazing is the Bible!

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 27, Day 2: Genesis 45:1-15

This is the third time Joseph has cried with his brothers, but the first time publicly.

It is understandable that the brothers were in shock and afraid. Here is the man who is the second most powerful person in all of the ancient world at that time, so Joseph could have them all killed with one word.

Joseph is over what his brothers did to him, and he wants his brothers to know that. It was all God’s divine plan. Do note that Joseph does not dismiss their role when he says “whom you sold into slavery.” The brothers still have to repent of their evilness. However, Joseph forgave because he understood God’s plan for all of this. He had a Godly-perspective that many of us need to adopt as well.

Joseph knew that the reason he was second to Pharaoh was not to save Egyptians, but to save his family, God’s people, and those who would bring forth Jesus. God used the most powerful nation on the planet to preserve His people. Simply beautiful. God always goes ahead of us, orchestrating our lives, too.

Man acts but God overrules these actions. Man has free will; God’s plan still prevails despite man’s evils. All things work for our good.

Jacob needed to hear that his favorite son, Joseph, was still alive. Joseph loved all his brothers, even the ones most cruel to him. He must have had a great time catching up on the happenings of the last 20 years with his brothers.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 17, Day 5: Genesis 27:42-46

December 24, 2020December 20, 2020 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary of Genesis 27:42-46:

Rebekah sends Jacob off to live with her brother, Laban, in Haran once she hears that Esau is plotting to kill him. She tells Jacob to stay until she sends for him that it’s safe to return. She then complains to Isaac about Esau’s Hittite wives and says if Jacob takes a Hittite wife, her life will not be worth living.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 17, Day 5: Genesis 27:42-46

13) He would then be the only one whom God’s original promise could go through. He’d in effect have the birthright and all the wealth that entails. No one knows the consequences of this action, but it could have been severe. God might have killed Esau as retribution. No one knows, but when you go against God, you should expect the utter worse in consequences.

14a) Hebrews 12:6-11 shows that discipline is for our good so that we can grow in righteousness with God. Jacob has to work to earn Rachel as his wife. He also was tricked into marrying Leah, Rachel’s sister. That causes much pain and rift in the family. Rebekah disappears after this incidence in the Bible, skipping over her death as well, except to mention her burial place  Genesis 49:29-31. Suffice it to say, with Jacob gone and her relationship with Esau strained, she probably led a very lonely life at the end of her years.

b) Things work out as God had planned them despite our bumbles. Although there may be consequences for our actions, we are to learn from them and grow in Him despite of ourselves. We turn towards God in these situations, not away from Him.

15) I’m just gonna throw this out there, but since we are all sinners, God has no choice but to use us as part of His plan if He is using humans at all. You should look at this as God using us despite our sins and flaws, and we should be privileged that He does. God uses us to teach us lessons, to grow our faith, and to draw us closer to Him. Otherwise, He could do it all Himself without the messes.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 17, Day 5: Genesis 27:42-46

Because of previous actions of manipulation, Jacob must flee, most likely to never see his mother again. All because of a scheme to receive Isaac’s earthly blessing. We need to strive for God’s heavenly blessing, not earth’s.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 17, Day 5: Genesis 27:42-46

We must remember that travel during ancient times is rough and takes a long time with no real paved roads and all of it mostly on foot. Thus, when Jacob leaves to Haran, odds are, he wouldn’t be back soon.

Jacob ended up staying in Haran for 20 years, marrying Leah and Rachel, Laban’s daughters. Rebekah tells Isaac that Jacob is leaving to find a wife, not to save his life from Esau. The tragedy here is that she may have died without ever seeing Jacob again (her death is not recorded in the Bible).

It seems like such a waste of time, effort, and energy to go against God. So why do all of us do it?

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 13, Day 5: Genesis 21:22-34

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Summary of Genesis 21:22-34

Abraham makes a treaty wtih Abimelech and his commander, Phicol, to stay in the land for years. Abimelech approaches Abraham for the treaty. Abraham swears he will deal with his descendants fairly since they are aliens in his land. Abraham complains to Abimelech about a well of water his servants had seized.  Abimelech said he knows nothing about it. Abraham gives Abimelech seven ewe lambs, sayng he dung the disputed well. This place was called Beersheba, meaning the well of seven or the well of the oath. Abimelech leaves to his land (Philistine). Abraham plants a tamarisk tree and calls upon God.

12a) Abimelech approaches Abraham for the treaty, saying God is with Abraham in all that he does. He is looking for a fair shake since Abraham is living in his land. Abraham swears he will deal with his descendants fairly.

b) Those around Abraham understand the power of God from the testimony of Abraham’s life. This is power. So what I say and do does matter to others as a testimony of God’s power.

13) Abraham plants a tamarisk tree and calls upon God. He also makes the treaty and offers 7 ewe to Abimelech in good faith. Abraham recognizes that Abimelech is making the treaty over fear of God as well.

14) Just do the best I can every day to honor God with my work, my words, my life, and let Him do the rest.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 13, Day 5: Genesis 21:22-34

Great little story here of the power of the testimony of your life and the grace we can show others.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 13, Day 5: Genesis 21:22-34

Bible scholars believe this was a different ruler than the Abimelech of Genesis 20. Abimelech was a popular title given to Philistine rulers at that time.

Abimelech noticed Abraham’s abundant wealth and blessings, so he approached him for a treaty out of fear of Abraham’s God.

When you have God, everything else falls into place.

Remember Abraham lives in the middle of the desert where water is a precious commodity indeed. A well had been seized by Abimelech and Abraham wanted it back. By sacrificing animals and giving some to Abimelech, Abraham is making it abundantly clear that this is his well.

Beersheba

Beersheba is known for a lot of Bible happenings:

  • Isaac digs a well here and builds an altar  (Genesis 26:23–33).
  • Jacob stops here as he leaves the promised land (Genesis 28:10–15, 46:1–7).
  • Beersheba becomes the territory of the tribe of Simeon and Judah (Joshua 15:28, 19:2).
  • Samuel’s sons were judges in Beersheba (I Samuel 8:2).
  • King Saul fortifies Beersheba (I Samuel 14:48, 15:2–9).
  • Elijah goes to Beersheba when Jezebel ordered him killed (I Kings 19:3).
  • Beersheba in known for idolatry (Amos 5:5 and 8:14).
  • From Dan to Beersheba described the entire land of Israel Judges 20:1, 1 Samuel 3:20, 2 Samuel 3:10, 1 Kings 4:25,

Abraham keeps talking to God his entire life, as seen here as he calls upon God. A tamarisk tree is a symbol of longevity here. Abraham plans to stay here a long time.

a well of water in the desert for hagar and ismael www.atozmomm.com

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 13, Day 4: Genesis 21:14-21

November 25, 2020November 22, 2020 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary of Genesis 21: 14-21:

Abraham set Ismael and Hagar off one day, and they wandered the desert of Beersheba. When they ran out of water, Hagar left Ismael under a bush, and she went a bit away so she would not have to watch him die. Ismael began to cry, and God heard. An angel of God called to Hagar from heaven. He tells her that God will make Ismael a great nation. A well of water appears so they could drink. God was with Ismael as he grew up. He became an archer and got married.

9) An angel of God called to Hagar from heaven. He tells her that God will make Ismael a great nation. A well of water appears so they could drink. God was with Ismael as he grew up. He became an archer and got married.

10) Personal Question. My answer: God hears us when we have given up all hope. God takes care of us always even when we don’t realize it. God cares for all people.

11) Personal Question. My answer: We should pray for all people as God does. Pray for blessing and prosperity.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 13, Day 4: Genesis 21:14-21

God is there even if we are not.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 13, Day 4: Genesis 21:14-21

God responds to Ismael’s weeping. Ismael is protected, as he is the descendent of Abraham. Ismael is the father of the Arabic people, which God blessed.

God provides for their needs, as he does ours when we are in our own wilderness. Note that God is near for believers and unbelievers alike; sometimes you just have to see it.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 13, Day 3: Genesis 21:1-13

November 24, 2020November 22, 2020 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary of Genesis 21:1-13:

Finally, Isaac arrives in God’s timing when Abraham is 100 years old. His name means “he laughs.”  Isaac is circumcised at 8 days old. Of course, Ismael is jealous of Isaac. Abraham threw a big feast for Isaac when he was weaned, and Sarah told Abraham to get rid of Ismael and Hagar. God confirmed that they should go, so Abraham set them off one day and they wandered the desert of Beersheba. God tells Abraham that Ismael shall be a great nation as well.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 13, Day 3: Genesis 21:1-13

6) Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did what he had promised at the very time God had promised.

7) Isaac will be recknoned and will be made into a great nation as well. Hagar bears children who are to be slaves. Galations 4 is Paul noticing the difference between those born of the flesh and those born of the promise. Of the promise is a gospel of faith, not one of reliance on your own power. Ismael represents those who rely on human power to accomplish tasks, which leaves people enslaved to the law and sin like Hagar. Isaac represents those who by faith alone are blessed and are set free to obey God.

8 ) God told Abraham to do what Sarah says and that He will handle the rest by making Ismael into a great nation.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 13, Day 3: Genesis 21:1-13

God has got everything.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 13, Day 3: Genesis 21:1-13

The Birth of Isaac

God fulfilles His promise with the birth of Isaac, 25 years after He first made the promise. This was an unconditional promise that Abraham had to do nothing to earn.

Isaac’s birth mirrors Jesus’ birth in many ways.

  • Miraculous
  • In God’s timing
  • Both were promised by God
  • Both were joyful (Genesis 21:6; Luke 1:46-47; 2:10-11).
  • The births were assured (Genesis 18:13-14; Luke 1:34, 37).

god fulfills his promises www.atozmomm.com

Obviously, Ismael would be jealous. Isaac was the promised one, not him. Most Bible scholars agree that Isaac is three years old here.

Ismael was cast out because he was a son of the flesh, which cannot co-exist with those of the spirit.

While your family is a strong bond, God’s bond of faith is stronger. Sometimes, you have to make a tough decision and separate from the flesh, no matter the relationship, and trust that God will handle the rest. God will take care of Ismael, which is why they were given only a few supplies. Here, Abraham acts in faith, as opposed to the lie of Sarah as his sister in Genesis 20. Abraham may have wanted Ismael as a backup plan if Isaac died (remember in ancient times, many children never made it to adulthood). God says to separate completely.
