BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 13, Day 2: Genesis 20

November 23, 2020November 22, 2020 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary of Genesis 20:

Abraham had been staying near the great trees of Mamre (Genesis 18) and now has moved on to the Negev between Kadesh and Shur. He stayed in Gerar for a time and again lied about Sarah being his sister.  So, of course, the king of Gerar, Abimelech, took her for his wife.

God rescued Sarah (again) when he came to Abimelech in a dream and told him he had taken a married woman unbeknownst and that is why God has kept him from touching her. God tells him to return Sarah and Abraham will pray for him so that he may live. Otherwise, he will die.

Abimelech called in Abraham and chastized him (like Pharaoh did) and asked him why he lied to him.  Abraham again gave his lame excuse of how he was afraid and he wasn’t really lying because Sarah is his half-sister. Abraham, as the head of the household, told Sarah to lie for him on their travels.

So afraid of God was Abimelech that he gave Abraham sheep, cattle, slaves, and whatever piece of land he wanted. He gave silver to Sarah’s “brother” so she would be vindicated for the wrongs he did.

Abraham prayed and God healed Abimelech and his household so that they could have kids again (God had closed their wombs because of Sarah).

3a) In Egypt where Abram went due to a famine. Abram told Sarai to tell the Egyptians she was his sister in order to protect himself because he was afraid the Egyptians would kill him while they were there. So Pharaoh married Sarai (thinking she wasn’t married) and treated Abram well because of it.  He was given sheep, cattle, donkeys, servants, and camels.

The Lord was angry at this so he punished Pharaoh and Pharaoh asked Abram why he lied to him. Pharaoh sent them out of his land.  They returned to the Negev much wealthier from his lie to Pharaoh.

b) Personal question. My answer: In this instance, I can’t. I’m unsure how you give your spouse to someone else. I can understand being afraid of death and doing irrational things. But this specifically, I can’t. Also, I’m wondering if because in Egypt Abraham was made a wealthy man because of Sarah, he tried this same thing again, and indeed, it worked again! Abraham was given a lot of wealth.

c) Personal Question. My answer: Unsure. Selfishness perhaps.

4) God once again stepped in to solve the situation and put things right. He came to Abimelech in a dream, told him the truth about Sarah, and told him waht to do. He also told him the consequences of not doing as He says.

5) Personal Question. My answer: my move, my career, my job.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 13, Day 2: Genesis 20

It seems Abraham made out in both these situations wtih Sarah, and God was the one who rectified the situation. I never see a sign of remorse from Abraham because he uses his fear of death as an excuse.

Why move somewhere where you suspect the people are pagans and where your fear for your life? This doesn’t make sense.

Abraham, as the protector of his wife, abandons her — again. I’d be mad as his wife.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 13, Day 2: Genesis 20

Abraham moved after Sodom and Gomorrah had been destroyed. Sarah was related to a wealthy man, which made her valuable in those days. Collecting wives was what rich people did in ancient times. Plus, this lie worked for Abraham before (he walked away wealthy), so why not use it again?

God could not let Sarah’s womb be compromised when it was about to bear Isaac, and the beginning of Jesus’s line. God protected Abimelech as well because he acted in good faith. God rescues us even when we make the same mistakes. He shows mercy and does not abandon us.

Abimelech was upset — and righfully so. Aren’t you upset when you are lied to? He also chastized Abraham (a man of God), while he was a pagan. Most definitly not a way to live here.

Abraham’s Excuse for Sin

Abraham was afraid, but not of God as he should have been. Instead, he relied on his own power (again, never a good thing) and half-truths that backfired again. Then, of all things, Abraham blames God (by God calling him to wander. Wander here means a negative way to wander, which is used 50 times in scripture to describe drunks and lies).

Here, Abimelech gives Abraham gifts and wealth to make up for the grievance. Abraham accepts (note he did not in Genesis 14:21-24)

I see no remorse here from Abraham. Do you?

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 12, Day 2: Genesis 18:16-33

November 16, 2020November 15, 2020 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary of Genesis 18:16-33:

Abraham just got done hosting God and two other men. He says that Abraham will become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him. They will keep the way of the Lord and the generations afterwards as well.

God announces His plan to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because it is so wicked. But Abraham intercedes and pleads with God not to, arguing that God cannot kill the righteous along with the wicked, treating them the same. Abraham says what if there are 50 righteous people? So God agrees that if He finds 50 righteous people He will not destroy them. Abraham keeps pleading with God, asking for 45, 40, and so on down the line till the number agreed upon is 10. Abraham returns home.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 12, Day 2: Genesis 18:16-33

3) That God walked with Abraham, and God hid nothing from Abraham. God has faith in Abraham to walk in His ways and to teach his children to do so as well.

4) Lot lives in Sodom, his nephew. Abraham is compassionate. God listens and shows mercy.

5) Abraham knew that God was righteous and would not destroy righteous believers because God would do what is right.

6) We can ask God to do what is right because we know God is good to do so. We also see how God answers prayers and requests here.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 12, Day 2: Genesis 18:16-33

We see the power of prayer firsthand. Because Abraham was bold and asked for God what was on his heart, a whole city was spared. Think of what you are hesitant to ask God and ask! He can do anything, especially if we ask.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 12, Day 2: Genesis 18:16-33

God reveals to Abraham what is about to happen to Sodom and Gomorrah for two reasons:

  1. Because God would bring forth a great nation from Abraham
  2. Because Abraham would teach his descendants about the One, True God

We can only assume what a huge outcry this was against Sodom and Gomorrah for God to want to destroy them. Possible sources of outcry include creation, angels, victims inside the cities, and God’s holy nature.

Obviously God knows the outcries are true against Sodom and Gomorrah since God knows everything. He says this for our purposes only so we know He is a just God. (Psalm 19:9, Revelation 16:7)

We can infer the two men were the angels whom will address Lot in Genesis 19.

What We See As Abraham Asks God to Spare Sodom and Gomorrah

  • Abraham draws near to God, as we should
  • Abraham reminds God of who He is
  • Abraham understands God’s nature
  • God agrees
  • Abraham is specific in his prayer (note the number of righteous people found)
  • Abraham asks with the right heart
  • Abraham is humble

This is a powerful passage of those before Jesus still being conformed in his image (Romans 8:29),

If Abraham persisted from 50 down to 10, why stop at 10? Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because only 4 righteous people (Lot’s family) were found. Would history have been different if Abraham had persisted? Perhaps Abraham himselfe believed that there were surely more than 10 people who were righteou there.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 11, Day 2: Genesis 17:1-8

November 9, 2020November 7, 2020 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary of Genesis 17:1-8:

When Abram was 99 years old, God appears to Abram again to confirm His covenant with him, saying again how he will increase his numbers and how he will be the father of many nations. He changes Abram’s name to Abraham (means father of many). God will make nations of him, and kings will come from him. The covenant will be an everlasting covenant with Abraham and his descendants, and the whole land of Canaan will be an everlasting possession to him and his descendants as well.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 11, Day 2: Genesis 17:1-8

3) God doesn’t just appear to anyone. He appears to Abraham who responds appropriately by falling facedown, showing submission. They had a very close relationship, one full of reverence and awe.

4a) To be blameless is to not be able to be accused of wrongdoing before God ( Psalm 15:2 ; 18:23 ). Through the death of Jesus and by God’s infinite grace and power, He declares that all believers in Christ are blameless in His sight. Col 1:22 1 Cor 1:8 ; Jude 24 Blameless also means whole, so God wants our entire being committed to Him.

b) Simply by believing in the saving power of Christ. Matthew 5:43-48 says to love your enemies. Philippians 2:13 says it’s God who works in us according to His good purpose. Colossians 1:26-29 says it’s Christ in us.

5) God promises that Abraham will be the father of many nations. God will make nations of him, and kings will come from him. The covenant will be an everlasting covenant with Abraham and his descendants, and the whole land of Canaan will be an everlasting possession to him and his descendants as well.

6) Personal Question. My answer: All of the promises in the Bible apply to me, and yes, I trust God to keep them. Even this covenant applies to me; it’s just renewed with Christ’s New Covenant. I trust God because He has always been faithful. He does what He says He will do.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 11, Day 2: Genesis 17:1-8

I love when God appears to people in the Bible, mainly because I picture God appearing to me. I love this repetition. I love how God cares enough to appear so many times for reassurance.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 11, Day 2: Genesis 17:1-8

It has now been 13 years since God last appeared to Abram (Genesis 16:15-16)., at least that is recorded in the Bible. Ninety-nine is still old, even for ancient times, so God is reassuring Abraham that soon he will have a son. Just for reference, if you remember Abram was 75 when he was called out of Haran, which we saw in Genesis 12:4. and 86 when Ismael was born, which we saw in  (Genesis 16:15-16)

Bible scholars believe that this was God in the form of Jesus.

The Hebrew for “I am God Almighty” is El Shaddai, which the exact meaning is still debated. Some say it means “I am God sufficient,” or “One who has His hand in everything.” It could have the connotation of poured out as well or rich and abundant.

Next we are to be blameless. Once we know who God is, this is possible.

Fun Fact: This is the first name change recorded in the Bible. We will see Jacob changed to Israel here soon (Genesis 32:28) and, of course, there’s Simon Peter Mark 3:16.

We are promised a new name too! (Revelation 2:17).

Names are significant in the Bible, so we should dive deep into them when we can.

Note: Every time God makes a promise to Abraham, it’s better than the last. Now, many nations will come and so will kings. We can apply this by thinking every time we are faced with a situation, God will make it/us greater. The land and the covenant is for everyone. And if you doubt God’s word, the nation of Israel is living proof that God keeps His promises.
