Summer Bible Study: Sermon on the Mount: Week 3, Day 2: Matthew 6:1-4

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 6:1-4

Be careful to not do acts of righteousness before men; if you do, you won’t have any rewards from your Father in heaven. Instead, all you will have is man’s applause and recognition, when you really want/need God’s. Do not give to the needy for yourself and for recognition (let your left hand know what your right hand is doing). Instead, give in secret. The Father will know and will reward you.

Questions for Matthew 6:1-4

3) All of Jesus’s examples teach to do these things for God and not for man’s recognition. We should also not be trying to lift ourselves up and take credit for things that are only possible through God. When you do things only for pride, that is sin. This brings to mind how we should give all the credit to God for all of our actions because nothing is possible without God.

4) God is the only one who should be exalted by us, not ourselves. God is always number one. God rewards us when we do things for Him. We try to earn God’s favor or the approval of others. We must do good deeds for God alone.

5) Unsure here. I really don’t care what others think of me. Yet, I know I do this. I can prevent this by always having God at the center of everything I do.

Conclusions to Sermon on the Mount Matthew 6:1-4

Good lesson on doing all things for God’s glory and not ours.

One must give and expect nothing in return, this includes thanks, praise, or recognition. We should give to those in need and recognize what He has given to us.

Summer Bible Study: Sermon on the Mount: Week 3, Day 1: Matthew 6

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 6

Be careful to not do acts of righteousness before men; if you do, you won’t have any rewards from your Father in heaven. Instead, all you will have is man’s applause and recognition, when you really want/need God’s. Do not give to the needy for yourself and for recognition (let your left hand know what your right hand is doing). Instead, give in secret. The Father will know and will reward you.

Pray to God unseen so you are not trying to impress men in order to give the impression you are righteous. Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. Pray the Lord’s prayer. Forgive those who sin against you, and God will forgive you for your sins.

Do not fast in order to appear pious for men. Instead, don’t let others know you are fasting and look good while fasting. Your Father will see you and reward you.

Don’t store up treasures on earth that will eventually disappear. Instead, store up treasures in heaven where nothing can destroy or steal them. Your heart is where your treasure is.

Your eyes are the light of your body. If you have good eyes, you’ll be full of light. If your eyes are bad, you’ll be full of darkness.

You cannot serve two masters. You cannot serve both God and money.

Do not worry about life, food, your body, and clothes. God takes care of the birds, and you are more valuable to God than them. Will worrying add an hour to your life? (In fact, all it does is take away an hour or more from your life).

Don’t worry about your clothes. The lilies of the field are more splendid than Solomon’s clothes ever were. If God clothes the lilies as such, won’t he clothe you, too?

Do not worry about your basic needs; God knows you need them. If you seek God’s kingdom and righteousness, all things will be given to you. Thus, don’t worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself. Focus on the day at hand.

Questions for Matthew 6

1) We naturally worry because we don’t have 100% faith and we can’t see the future, such as knowing where our next meal will come from. God is all-knowing and all-powerful. He is in control; we are not. That is why we worry.

2) God provides everything. He works for our good. He thinks of me. I would live by God’s voice!

Conclusions to Sermon on the Mount Matthew 6

Good lesson on how we should now worry, but it’s in our nature to do so since we are not in control like God is.

We are to depend on God for everything.

God cares about who we trust with our lives, what we love the most, and us.

Summer Bible Study: Sermon on the Mount: Week 2, Day 5: Matthew 5:38-48

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 5:38-48

Jesus says that previously an eye for an eye was the rule, meaning if someone did you harm, you do them harm back. However, Jesus says the opposite. If someone does you harm, do not resist them. Give and lend to those who ask.

Jesus says to love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Love and greet everyone. God handles the evil.

Questions for Matthew 5:38-48

12) Naturally, we want revenge when evil was done to us. It’s hard to pray for others who have harmed you. But, as Christians, we must due to the Christ’s forgiveness of our sins. I’m sure there are many times I took revenge and regretted it. Not so much these days.

13) Jesus is purely holy with a forgiving and merciful heart. We must live up to Jesus’ standards with regards to others in order to shine God’s light wherever we go.

14) We cannot be perfect, but we can walk in the ways of Chrirst and thought his righteousness strive to be more Christ-like. We are set apart, and we can live in the power of Christ with the help of the Holy Spirit. We can work on being holy with each passing day.

Conclusions to Sermon on the Mount Matthew 5:38-48

Love is more powerful than evil. We hold others accountable, but not in excess. We surrender our rights as Jesus did.

We cannot save ourselves. We cannot be perfect. We boast in Jesus. He transforms us to be like him.

Summer Bible Study: Sermon on the Mount: Week 2, Day 4: Matthew 5:31-37

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 5:31-37

Jesus says that the only reason for divorce is unfaithfulness. Otherwise, if you divorce, if you remarry, you will be committing adultery. Jesus says there is not a need for an oath at all since your word should be strong enough.

Questions for Matthew 5:31-37

9) We uphold the Bible’s standards for marriage and don’t compromise based on society’s rules. We teach this to others, and we live this in our own marriages. We help those going through divorce. We can pray for them, listen, and help in any way we can. Many innocents are hurt through divorce, like children, so we must help in any way we can.

10) It is important that we follow through by doing what we say we will do. However, Christians don’t need to swear an oath; your word should be good enough. I find it more difficult to keep my word when it’s something I don’t want to do.

11) It’s important to know God’s word and use it throughout your days to stay pure and walk in God’s ways. When we know God’s words, we can speak it better.

Conclusions to Sermon on the Mount Matthew 5:31-37

Lying is sin. Period.

We must control our thoughts, our hearts, and our words as much as our actions.

You cannot earn God’s love; He gives it freely. When you embrace that, you embrace freedom.

We must love what God love and want what He wants. Do you?

Summer Bible Study: Sermon on the Mount: Week 2, Day 2: Matthew 5:17-20

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 5:17-20

Jesus is still on the mountain, preaching. He says that he has come to fulfill the Law of the Prophets, not to abolish it. The Law will remain until God’s plan is accomplished. Those who preach and follow these commands will be called great in heaven; those who break the command will be called least. Only those righteous will enter the kingdom of heaven.

Questions for Matthew 5:17-20

3) The Law will be fulfilled in him and the Law is perfect. The Old Testament is necessary as it’s the history of God’s people and everything in it points to Christ. The New Testament is the fulfillment of this Law in the person of Jesus.

4) Jesus is the only person to have lived who was free of sin. His sacrifice fulfilled the requirements of the Old Testament for sacrificial blood. Jesus will ultimately fulfill the prophecy of the Bible in his Second Coming. Dear Lord, thank you for your Son who died for all of our sins, so we can live righteously with you. Thank you for the Old Testament and how it points to Jesus. Thank you for your wisdom, so we can live better lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

5) The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law believed that if they went through the motions of the law, they would be forgiven. However, we all fall short and need a Savior, which we know and understand a bit more each and every day.

Conclusions to Sermon on the Mount Matthew 5:17-20

Thank God for his Words to us! There are approximately 613 Old Testament laws.

We are righteous because of our faith in Christ. He alone grants us righteousness, or being able to stand with our Holy God.

We cannot do it/life alone. We need a Savior in order to have any hope at all. Our acts won’t make us holy; only Jesus can. Embrace him today!

Those who preach and follow these commands will be called great in heaven; those who break the command will be called least. Only those righteous will enter the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus says that you can commit murder in your heart when you are angry with others and you will then be subject to judgment. Be reconciled with those who you are angry with. Settle matters before it goes to court because going to court could land you in jail. Jesus says you commit adultery if you look at someone with lust. Gouge out your eye and cut off your hand if it causes you to sin. Losing a part is better than losing yourself.

Jesus says that the only reason for divorce is unfaithfulness. Otherwise, if you divorce, if you remarry, you will be committing adultery. Jesus says there is not a need for an oath at all since your word should be strong enough.

Questions for Matthew 5:17-48

1) God says to love those who hate us and to do more than others. Our natural inclinations is to treat these people poorly and ignore them, rather than embrace them.

2) All those around me will benefit. The fact that Jesus loves everyone is encouraging, as we all know this is incredibly hard to do.

Conclusions to Sermon on the Mount Matthew 5:17-48

Jesus came to fulfill God’s plan and the law.

While it sound simple, putting God first is hard in our daily struggles, circumstances, and experiences. I think if we paused more, we’d hear God more and remember to put Him first in everything we do. Our lives (and the lives of those around us) would be enriched. So, pause more, and see what happens!

Summer Bible Study: Sermon on the Mount: Week 1, Day 6: Matthew 5:16

Passage: Matthew 5:16

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 5:16

Reflection Questions for Matthew 5:16

15) I was convicted by: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Lord, will you help me to thirst for you, to long for you, to want more of you in my life and to guide me. Help me to go to you first when I need anything. Help me to stop and pray. Help me to find you everywhere I go.

16) It challenges me to put God first in every aspect of my daily life. To look for opportunities to help others and to shine Jesus’ light into the world. It inspires me to be more present and there for my family. It challenges me to put myself out there for him.

Conclusion to Week 1 of Sermon on the Mount: Matthew 5:1-16

Great study of the Beatitudes! There is so much here that we all can learn from and implement into our daily lives. And, the words are so simple, but the actions are not so simple.

If you are feeling overwhelmed right now by the depth of these verses, I think a good place to start is to desire more of God in your life. Simply pray, “God, I want more of you,” and see what He does. Sometimes, the simple things is all God asks of us and what we can do in our lives.

Will you pray that right now?

Summer Bible Study: Sermon on the Mount: Week 1, Day 5: Matthew 5:13-16

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 5:13-16

Jesus calls believers the salt of the earth, but we must maintain our salt or we will be lost.

Jesus calls believers the light of the world, and like a city on the hill, your light cannot be hidden. Let your light shine as a testament to God so that others may come to know him.

Questions for Matthew 5:13-16

12) Salt preserves food and enhances the taste of food. It also prevents decay of the food. Salt is also necessary for humans to live. Christians help prevent decay by helping others find Christ. We also are distinct from others.

13) Light allows us to see. Christians are to illuminate or make visible Christ. Our good works are to shine for all to see. We are to be the light, the TRUTH, in a dark world.

14) Humble, God-centered, living out the Gospel, speaking God’s truth, spreading the Word. We shine our light to others by living a Godly life.

Conclusions to WordGo Sermon on the Mount Matthew 5:13-16

God puts us where He wants us to be to make a difference in this world.

We guard against being diluted and being too harsh to offend others.

When we surrender to God and are made holy, we can grow strong in Him. Every day we grow stronger with prayer, Bible study, speaking to other Christians, and helping others.

We must use our circumstances (no matter how much we do not like them) to shine beauty into the world and those around us.

Slowly, you will become who God created you to be. God will bless you. Hold on to that fact no matter what anyone or anything tells you.

Summer Bible Study: Sermon on the Mount: Week 1, Day 4: Matthew 5:9-12

SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 5:9-12

Blessed are the peacemakers who will be called the sons of God. The persecuted will have the kingdom of heaven. You are blessed when you are insulted. Your reward in heaven will be great. The prophets were persecuted, too.

Questions for Matthew 5:9-12

9) We have made peace per se with God by accepting his Son, Jesus, as our Savior. Therefore, we are reconciled to God. We want to help others become reconciled to God, which is why we are peacemakers.

10) I truly don’t know anyone like this. However, I would like to be better at helping others make peace with God by finding Him and Jesus. I can do this by just being open to the opportunities when they present themselves.

11) We are persecuted because we have God. Others are jealous when they see God in us and are convicted of their sins. They feel guilty over their sins, and they don’t want to feel that way; therefore, they persecute Christians. I would say I get this sometimes at work although it’s subliminal.

Conclusions to WordGo Sermon on the Mount Matthew 5:9-12

As we grow in sanctification or in holiness, we receive God’s blessings and are able to bless others.

Growing with God takes a lifetime; it’s a slow process, but with each step, it happens. Reflect back on yourself a year ago, and you’ll see it.

Jesus is our peace. Find it with him.
