Summary of Revelation 5:8-10

The elders and the four living creatures worshipped the Lamb when he took the scroll. They praised Jesus for purchasing for God believers who will reign on earth forever.

7a) They fell down before the Lamb and worshipped him with a new song.

b) The Lamb was worthy because he was slain and purchased for God persons from all over the world and made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve God and reign on earth.

c) That the Lamb/Jesus sacrificed himself so we could be purchased for God. This means everything to me as now I can spend eternity with God, worshipping him, too.

8 ) I know that Jesus has purchased me because I’ve prayed for Jesus to come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior. God has chosen me to be with Him forever. The Holy Spirit lives inside of me. He has purchased us from a life of hell and eternal damnation.

9a) Humans/believers in Christ. Praising the Lord and serving Him all the rest of my days. Telling others of Christ, our Lord and Savior. Living a Godly life so that others may see and believe.

b) This is a tough one. I would be more Godly and do more things Jesus would do. I think what I deem important would not be as much.

Incense usually smells good, it flows upwards towards heaven, and it requires fire! Amazing! Incense in the Bible is seen as carrying the people’s prayer up to God.

Vere dignus is Latin for “you are worthy.” The Roman emperors used this as a greeting. However, there’s only one who is worthy!

Our kingdom is heaven as we reign as kings with Jesus. Jesus is our mediator, allowing us to be priests.

Fun Fact: “New song” appears 9 times in the Bible.

Summary of Revelation 5:6-7

John sees a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. He [Jesus] went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne.

5a) Jesus. Jesus looked like a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes.

b) The Lamb was slain to cover our sins, so believers can be with God for all of eternity. This means everything to me, for I know where I’m going and where I belong and who I belong to.

6a) God and Jesus are one.

b) It symbolizes completion. Jesus fully sees and understands (omniscient). The horns represent power, so we see Jesus’ absolute authority (omnipotence) over all. The seven spirits are the Holy Spirit both the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ.

What a great picture! We see God’s plan coming to fruition with Jesus opening the scroll. How amazing!

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 10, Day 2: Revelation 5:1-5

Summary of Revelation 5:1-5

John sees God holding a scroll sealed with 7 seals. There was no one worthy to open the scrolls. John wept because no one was able to open the scrolls. Then, one of the elders said that the Lion of the tribe of Judah (Jesus) is able to open the scroll.

3a) John saw God holding a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. The angel asked, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?”

b) He wept. He was so overwhelmed with grief cause he knew the scroll needed to be opened since the angel was seeking someone worthy. He may have thought the future lay on it and he wanted to know it. Or, he thought that the world would end if it were not opened. Whatever John thought, it was profound enough to make him cry.

4a) The elder said, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

b) These are messianic titles or titles for Jesus. Judah is compared to a lion’s cub, and it is from the tribe of Judah that Jesus will come. Jesus will come from the line of David. He will establish the forever kingdom.

c) Jesus overcame sin to save all of humanity with his blood. He purchased us for God. It is encouraging and gives me hope when I am down.

Most scrolls at that time only had writing on one side. There were 7 strings that were sealed with wax creating the 7 seals on this one scroll.

No one knows what is on this scroll, and only Jesus can open it. Many Bible scholars say this seal holds the history of the world and is God’s final will because wills in Roman times had 7 seals on them.

The Messianic title Lion of the tribe of Judah comes from Genesis 49:9-10, Isaiah 31:4, and Hosea 11:10. Root of David comes from Isaiah 11:10 and is also used in Revelation 22:16.

The scroll is most likely God’s redemptive plan for mankind come to fruition, as well as His purposes for the world. If it’s not opened, none of it will be fulfilled.

Important Symbols in Revelation

The Number 7: The most repeated number in the book of Revelation, it represents wholeness and completion. John wrote to 7 churches. You’ll see 7 lampstands, 7 angels, and 7 stars, representing these churches. You’ll meet a lamb with 7 horns and 7 eyes that open the 7 seals of God’s scroll. Then, there will be 7 scenes with 7 trumpets and 7 bowls of wrath paralleling the 7 scrolls. God’s people will receive 7 blessings in this magnificent book.

Horn: Symbolizes a king or kingdom. They also represent power and strength.

Dragon: A depiction of Satan or enemies of Israel

Clouds: God’s presence and glory. Also, how Jesus will return to earth.

Fire: Judgment, purification

Stars: Ruling authority

White: Color of triumph and purity and righteousness

7 Lamps: Holy Spirit

God’s Throne Room: God’s power and rule

Thunder, Wind, & Lightning: God’s judgment

Eyes: Knowledge and wisdom

Lamb: God’s redemptive plan

Incense smoke: Carried the people’s prayers to God

Vines & Fig Trees: Prosperity

Sackcloth: Clothing of mourning and repentance

Scales: Scarcity

White robes: salvation, God’s righteousness

Earthquakes: God’s presence and judgment

Number 144,000: Completeness. A multiple of 12. Also represents Israel’s tribes and those marked with the Lamb or God’s name.

Trumpets: Announced a war or called God’s people together. They also announce God’s impending judgment.

Women: Religion in the Book of Revelation

Number 12: The 12 Tribes of Israel or the 12 Apostles. It also is a number of completeness and wholeness

Firstfruits: Hope of the harvest and a praise offering to God

Hail: judgment against mankind

Bowls: images of judgment

Clothing: character, God’s gift of a transformed life

Scarlet and Crimson: Sin

Babylon: Rebellion against God

Waters: people or armies. Waters and living waters symbolize blessings from God’s presence

Light: God’s glory

Wilderness or Desert: a place of testing and evil

Mountain: the place God makes Himself known

Washed robes: experiencing God’s grace through forgiveness of sin

Dogs: those who shut God out of their lives and reject His righteousness

The living creatures and the 24 elders worship God forever, saying He is worthy of their praise, glory, power, and honor as the Creator of all things.

12) The twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:

“You are worthy, our Lord and God,
    to receive glory and honor and power,

    and by your will they were created
    and have their being.”

They do this because God is creator of all things.

13a) Worship of God

b) It shows me that all of life should be about praising God.

14) God, you are worthy of all praise as the Creator of the universe. Nothing happens without your knowledge. You are in charge of all things. Everything is yours. Thank you, Lord. Summary of Revelation 4:6b-8

There was a sea of glass in front of the throne. Four living creatures were surrounding the throne. They were covered in eyes. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.”

9) Four living creatures were surrounding the throne. They were covered in eyes. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.”

10) Holy, Holy, Holy: this means that God is holy, pure, perfect.

Lord God Almighty: God is Lord over all things.

Who was, and is, and is to come: God has always existed and will always exist. He is the Alpha and the Omega. He is eternal.

11a) Praising God means to worship Him. It expresses your gratitude for Him. You acknowledge his greatness and worth. You can praise God in worship, singing, dancing, prayer, studying His Word, and more.

b) I still have a job. I still have a home. I have my health and my family. I lead a good life. Everything is from Him. Be grateful for everything, and do everything in God’s name.

From Ezekiel 1:4-14 and 10:20-22, the creatures are cherubim. Satan used to be one of these till he was thrown out of heaven for his sins. You’ll find cherubim in the tabernacle (Exodus 25:17-22 and 26:1-31).

The eyes mean they see things and have a high intelligence and understanding.

Each has a different face. Of course, there is much debate about what these four faces represent, from each book of the 4 Gospels to virtues, angels, apostles, and more.

They do represent all of creation: animals (wild and domestic), birds, and mankind.

Summary of Revelation 4:4-6a

There were 24 other thrones surrounding God’s throne in heaven that John saw. 24 elders sat upon them. They were dressed in white with gold crowns on their heads. Lightning, rumblings, and thunder came from the throne. 7 lamps were lit (the spirits of God). A sea was in front of the throne. 4 living creatures were around the throne and they were covered in eyes.

6) 24 elders surrounded the throne. White symbolizes purity, so they were pure to be with God. They are either humans or angels.

Isaiah 6:1-7: God was seated on a throne. His robe filled the temple. Seraphim were around him, singing to him and praising him.

Ezekiel 1: He saw a cloud with lightning and light. He saw 4 living creatures. He has a throne of lapis lazuli. Radiance was around God like a rainbow.

Bible scholars debate whether the 24 elders are human (Revelation 6:11, 7:9, 13-14) or angels (Mark 16:5; John 20:12; Acts 1:10. They say they represent the 12 tribes of Israel along with the 12 apostles.

Believers were crowns (1 Corinthians 9:25; 2 Timothy 4:8; 1 Peter 5:4).

Both saints and angels are depicted in white robes, which represents purity.

The 7 Spirits of God is the Holy Spirit seen Revelation 1:4 and Isaiah 11:2). Here, we see the Holy Spirit as the 7 lamps. The Holy Spirit can also be a dove (Matthew 3:16) and a flame of fire (Acts 2:3).

There is some sort of body of water before God.

“After this” marks another section in the book of Revelation. Now, we’ll be in heaven looking down on earth.

Fun Fact: “After this” is used 5 times in the Book of Revelation.

Many Bible scholars put Revelation 4-19 together as a section that focuses on God’s judgment on the world from heaven. Here, we’ll see the 7 scrolls, 7 trumpets, 7 signs, and 7 bowls.

Jesus is the voice, inviting John in.

Note, “church” never appears in this section in Revelation. Jesus addresses the churches in the first three chapters; now he focuses on individuals.

John was “in the Spirit” in Revelation 1:10. He’s in the Spirit here, too.

Jasper is white and ruby is red. John is describing the colors of light emanating from the throne.

The rainbow was God’s promise to Noah to never flood the world again. (Genesis 9:11-17)

This shows that although God can do whatever He wants, He won’t break his promises.
