BSF Study Questions Romans: From Guilt to Grace Lesson 11 Day 5: Romans 6:19-23

November 5, 2026October 25, 2026 by atozmom, posted in BSF Romans: From Guilt to Grace 2026/2027

Summary of Romans 6:19-23

Just as you once surrendered to sin, which produced shame and earned the wage of death, now surrender completely to God. Serving Him produces the fruit of growing holiness and ends in the free gift of eternal life through Christ.

BSF Study Questions Romans: From Guilt to Grace Lesson 11, Day 5: Romans 6:19-23

12) A slave to sin results in shame and death. A slave to God produces holiness and eternal life.
13a) Sin results in trauma, hurt, pain, broken relationships, disappointment, disillusionment, depression, and a lack of will to do much at all sometimes.
b) God can do anything. Hold on to that truth. God’s grace forgives failure, while His sovereign power transforms past mistakes into spiritual growth, lasting hope, and ultimate praise for His glory.
14) Gratitude, hope, forgiveness, and a will to do His will in your life. Meditating on eternal life fosters joyful gratitude, fearless humility, and profound generosity, driving believers to love sacrificially, reject earthly anxieties, and live with hopeful endurance.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Romans: From Guilt to Grace Lesson 11, Day 5: Romans 6:19-23

Very simple stated. Just remember sin results in death. Jesus leads to life.

This further explains the commands from Romans 6:11-13.

When you are tempted, lean on the truth of eternal life. We all know deep inside that sinful acts lead to consequences none of us want. Lean on God and His Word in these moments of your life.

Everything you do is work for Jesus.

God’s gifts are so much greater than the enemy’s “gifts.”

Since Jesus paid the price for us, he owns us.

Allow righteousness to lead us to God.

END NOTES SUMMARIZED

In Romans 6:19-23, Paul brings his entire argument concerning grace and obedience to a powerful climax. He moves from the daily commands of offering our bodies to God into a stark, final comparison of the absolute outcomes of serving sin versus serving God.

Here is the breakdown of his argument in these verses:

  • The Limitation of the Metaphor (Verse 19a): Paul pauses to acknowledge that comparing a relationship with God to human “slavery” is an imperfect analogy. He uses it only because human limitations make it difficult to grasp profound spiritual truths. God’s ownership is not abusive like human slavery, but the absolute devotion and allegiance it requires are total.

  • The Law of Spiritual Momentum (Verse 19b): Paul outlines a principle of progression. Just as yielding to impurity naturally spiraled into “ever-increasing wickedness” (sin compounds upon itself), believers must now proactively yield to righteousness. This new trajectory compounds as well, resulting in progressive “holiness” (sanctification).

  • The Bitter Fruit of the Past (Verses 20-21): Paul asks the Romans to honestly evaluate their old lives. When they were mastered by sin, they were entirely “free” from the control of righteousness. But what was the payoff? This supposed “freedom” only produced actions they are now deeply ashamed of, and its ultimate destination was death.

  • The Fruitful Present (Verse 22): In contrast, having been emancipated from sin and willingly bound to God, the believer’s life now produces entirely different fruit. The immediate result is a life of holiness, and the final, guaranteed destination is eternal life.

  • The Ultimate Contrast (Verse 23): Paul summarizes the entire chapter with one of the most famous verses in Scripture. He contrasts two masters, two payments, and two destinies. Sin is a cruel master that pays a strict, earned “wage”—death. God, however, is a gracious master who does not pay us what we have earned; instead, He grants a free, unmerited “gift”—eternal life, found exclusively in union with Christ Jesus.

Conclusion

Paul concludes that true neutrality is impossible; you are either earning death under sin or receiving life under grace. The ultimate difference between the two realms is the nature of the payoff. Hell is an earned wage for human rebellion, but heaven and eternal life can never be earned—they are the entirely free gift of God, secured solely through our union with Jesus Christ.
