BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 5, Day 5: Genesis 7

October 1, 2020October 3, 2020 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary of Genesis 7:

God tells Noah to enter the ark with the animals for in seven days He will send rain for 40 days and nights. Noah obeys. Noah was 600 years old when the flood happened. All the animals came to him. Then the Lord shut them in and the waters came. Everything perished. After the rain stopped, the earth remained flooded for 150 days.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 5, Day 5: Genesis 7

13) Personal Question. My answer: God always has hope, even though He knows what will happen. He created man, knowing that one day He would destroy them. He gave man 120 years to repent, and still nothing but evil. God’s judgement is swift, it’s absolute, and you are powerless beneath it. No questions are raised for me.

14) Personal Question. My answer: God is always faithful to His word, and if we have faith in the Word, we have faith in God.

15) Personal Question. My answer: It’s an encouragement because it shows there is retribution for all the wrongs done in the world. It’s a warning that God can judge whenever He wants. It’s both for me, to follow His ways always. I know God will punish and destroy the wicked one day. I know He will judge. And I need to be as prepared as I can be for when He judges me.

16) Personal Question. My answer: It shows how every day could be your last and that you should live each life — treating others as if it is your last.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 5, Day 5: Genesis 7

I love the story of Noah. Here’s a guy of faith who is told to build a big boat and save his entire family by God. How awesome and scary is that! Yet, he does it without fail, without question, showing us what a walk with God truly is.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 5, Day 5: Genesis 7

Genesis 7:

God was in the ark and would be with Noah in the ark, so He called Noah to come into the ark with Him.

“Notice that the Lord did not say to Noah, ‘Go into the ark,’ but ‘Come,”

In Genesis 6:20 God said the animals would come to Noah by migration.

Noah, the animals, and his family had to wait in the ark seven days for the rain to come. They had never seen rain up to this time. This was a real test of faith – to wait a week after more than 100 years of preparation.

The heavens containing the great waters that were above the firmament (Genesis 1:7) opened up. These waters formed the huge so-called blanket of water in the upper part of the earth’s atmosphere since creation. Waters came up from under the earth, too.

The Number 40 in the Bible

Here we see the first use of the number 40 in the Bible. It has become associated with testing and purification, especially before entering into something new and significant.

  • Moses’ time on Mount Sinai (Exodus 24:18, Deuteronomy 9:25)
  • The spies’ trip to Canaan (Numbers 13:25)
  • Israel’s time in the wilderness (Numbers 14:33, 32:13)
  • Elijah’s miraculous journey to Sinai (1 Kings 19:8)
  • Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness (Mark 1:13).

Note that God shuts the door. God has the final say in judgement. God shuts people out.

God kept the door open until the last possible minute, but there came a time when the door had to shut. Jesus is He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens (Revelation 3:7).

Of the more than 200 cultures that have their own account of the flood the following aspects of the story are common:

  • 88% describe a favored family.
  • 70% attribute survival to a boat.
  • 95% say the sole cause of the catastrophe is a flood.
  • 66% say that the disaster is due to man’s wickedness.
  • 67% record that animals are also saved.
  • 57% describe that the survivors end up on a mountain.
  • Many of the accounts also specifically mention birds being sent out, a rainbow, and eight persons being saved.

The water from the flood is collected in oceans today.

The Bible says that only the animals that had the breath of the spirit of life. The fish did not die in the flood; only animals with the breath of life in them died, the animals on dry land.

  • God may have put some or many of these animals into a period of hibernation for this period, meaning that less food, space, and supervision was be needed.
  • God provides many animals today with an amazing instinct for hibernation. It would be no difficulty for Him to miraculously impart a unique instinct for these particular animals.

Fun Fact: The flood is given more words in Scripture than Creation or the Fall.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 5, Day 4: Genesis 6-7

September 30, 2020October 3, 2020 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary of Genesis 6:

The sons of God married any daughters they chose. The Lord said His Spirit will not contend with (be with) man forever for he is mortal; his days will be a hundred and twenty years. The Nephilim were the heroes of old, men of renown and were on earth during this time when the sons of God were as well.

God saw how men’s hearts had become only evil and He was filled with pain. God said he would wipe mankind from the face of the earth for He is grieved (regretted) He created them. Except for Noah who was a righteous man and walked with God. Noah had 3 sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth.

The earth was corrupt and the people were violent.

God tells Noah He is going to destroy the world, and he needs to build an ark. God enters a covenant with Noah. He tells Noah he will need to bring in two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive and every kind of food for him and for the animals.

Noah did everything God commanded.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 5, Day 4: Genesis 6-7

10) Noah did everything just as God commanded him. God told Noah exactly what to do, including the size and dimensions of the ark, so Noah knew what to do. God revealed information to Noah as needed, telling him to build the ark before telling him why.

11a) Noah did everything just as God commanded him.

b) Personal Question. My answer: We only exist by God’s grace, so when He decides to end life, there is nothing we can do about it and should be grateful for what life God has given us.

12) Personal Question. My answer: Unsure. We are about to move again. I’m homeschooling my son again. I’m working, living life the best I can. Praying as I go along.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 5, Day 4: Genesis 6-7

I love the story of Noah. Here’s a guy of faith who is told to build a big boat and save his entire family by God. How awesome and scary is that! Yet, he does it without fail, without question, showing us what a walk with God truly is.

Last go around, we had a lot of other Bible passage readings with Genesis 6 & 7: Hebrews 11:7, 1 Peter 3:20; 2 Peter 2:4-9; 3:1-10; Jude 5-7; Matthew 24:36-42; Luke 17:26-27. Matthew and Luke talk specifically how the people were eating, drinking, and marrying up until the day of the flood. This tells us that no one had a clue what God was doing, and if they were Godless, they didn’t care. They lived their lives day-by-day, which is how we are supposed to live, expect with an eye towards Jesus.

These are the extra readings I wish BSF would still include for those of us who crave more of God.

1 Peter 3:20 is a gem, describing how God waited patiently for His people to come to Him, like he does today. Instead of millions being saved, it was only 8.

One of the saddest parts of life is how all of Creation has to suffer the consequences of our sin, including animals, plants, and our beloved pets. If you’ve been alive long enough, you’ve experienced the death of a pet. Along with the death of loved ones, it’s one of lives’ hardest moments, especially once you know that it’s all your fault.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 5, Day 4: Genesis 6-7

Genesis 6:

Who Were the Sons of God and the Daughters of Men?

Many have believed the sons of God were those from the line of Seth, and the daughters of men were from the line of Cain, and this describes an intermarriage between the godly and the ungodly, something God specifically prohibits (Deuteronomy 7:1-4, 2 Corinthians 6:14).

Some believe that sons of God are either demons (angels in rebellion against God) or uniquely demon-possessed men, and the daughters of men are human women.

The phrase sons of God clearly refers to angelic creatures when it is used the three other times in the Old Testament (Job 1:6, 2:1, and 38:7). The translators of the Septuagint translated sons of God as angels. Those ancient translators clearly thought sons of God referred to angelic beings, not to people descended from Seth.

Jude 6 tells us of the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own habitation. Jude goes on (Jude 7) to tell us they sinned in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh. Here in Genesis 6, as in Sodom and Gomorrah, there was an unnatural sexual union. Jude 6 also makes it clear what God did with these wicked angels. They are reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day for not keeping their proper place. Their sinful pursuit of freedom has put them in bondage.

In Matthew 22:30, we see where Jesus said angels neither marry nor are given in marriage; but Jesus never said angels were sexless, and He was also speaking about faithful angelic beings (angels of God in heaven), not rebellious ones.

In sum, no one knows exactly who the sons of God and the daughters of men are referring to.

Satan could have sent his angels to intermarry in an effort to ensure the promised seed of Jesus was never born. And Satan almost succeeded. The race was so polluted that God found it necessary to start again with Noah and his sons, and to imprison the demons that did this so they could never do this again.

Take away from the flood: there is a point of sin where God will say “enough is enough.” Turn to God now because no other days are promised to us.

God said He would flood the earth 120 years before He did. Perhaps He is hoping some will turn to Him.

Giants on earth refers to the unnatural offspring of the union between the sons of God and the daughters of men, though there were people of unusual size on the earth both before and after the flood (and also afterward). These ones before the flood were unique because of the demonic element of their parentage. They were the mighty men of old, men of renown.

Jesus said, as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be (Matthew 24:37). In other words, the conditions of the world before the coming of Jesus will be like the conditions of the world before the flood:

  • Large population (Genesis 6:1)
  • Sexual perversion (Genesis 6:2)
  • Demonic activity (Genesis 6:2)
  • Evil in the heart of man (Genesis 6:5)
  • Widespread corruption and violence (Genesis 6:11).

Even though God knew He would destroy mankind, He still felt grieved.

noah's ark www.atozmomm.com

Noah

Noah found grace; he did not earn it.  Noah had the righteousness that is of faith because as soon as the floodwaters had dried up and he left the ark, he offered sacrifices (Genesis 8:20). Noah’s three sons will figure into the account in a significant way. God will use them as a foundation for the rest of the human race.

Since the fall in Genesis 3, every human being has a death sentence. The timing and method of that death are completely in the hands of God.

Instead of wiping out the entire race, God preserved a remnant.

The Ark

  • The ark was as long as a 30-story building is high (about 450 feet or 150 meters)
  • 75 feet (25 meters) wide
  • 45 feet (15 meters) high.
  • The ark is meant to float, like a barge, not sail.
  • Was the shape of a shoebox, was plenty large enough (about the size of the Titanic)
  • Had a cubit-wide opening (18 inches, one-half meter) all the way around the top.

It was not until 1858 that a boat bigger than the ark was built. The ark was certainly big enough to do the job. If the ark carried two of every family of animals, there were around 700 pairs of animals; but if the ark carried two of every species of animals, there were around 35,000 pairs of animals.

The average size of a land animal is smaller than a sheep. The ark could carry 136,560 sheep in half of its capacity, leaving plenty of room for people, food, water, and whatever other provisions were needed.

Noah was not told why he was making this ark in the beginning; just to make it.

Throughout history, many people have reported seeing the ark and/or finding the ark. The pitch worked to waterproof the wood. God told Noah to cover it with pitch inside and outside, which makes it possible that the ark was preserved for a long time. It is possible God still has a purpose for the ark, to use it to remind the world of a past judgment shortly before a future judgment.

Fun Fact:  Because of this mention of pitch (a petroleum product) in what most people think is the Middle East, it is said that John D. Rockefeller looked for (and found) oil in that region based on this verse.

Despite the dramatic judgment coming, God will make a covenant with Noah, and he and his family will be saved. God will also use Noah to save a remnant of each animal so the earth could be populated with people and animals after the flood.

The Bible presents Noah as a great hero of God. He was an outstanding example of righteousness (Ezekiel 14:14), a preacher of righteousness (2 Peter 2:5), and Noah condemned the world by offering salvation in the ark that the whole world rejected (Hebrews 11:7).

Noah was a preacher of righteousness (2 Peter 2:5), yet in his 120-year ministry, it seems that no one was saved.

7) Man’s wickedness was great, and every inclination of the thoughts of his heart were only evil. The Lord was grieved that he had made man, and his heart was filled with pain. God decides to wipe his entire creation out because He is so grieved He made them.

8 ) Noah was righteous, blameless among the people, and he walked faithfully with God.

9a) Noah obeyed every command given to him from God without question. He 100% trusted God when He spoke to him although the request probably seemed outlandish at the time.

b) Personal Question. My answer: Too many things to list! Serving God unquestionably is challenging, even in the little things, let alone the big things.

Last go around in the study of Genesis, we were asked who the sons of God and the daughters of men were. Nehilim is explained HERE

We were also asked what we do to cause God grief and have we found favor in God’s eyes.

God could just have snapped His fingers, and Noah and his family could have been saved. Instead, He had Noah build an ark. God does the same thing to us. He doesn’t wave His magic wand and make our problems go away, but He does provide a way out and through that is most likely not our way.

The Number 40 in the Bible

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 5, Day 2: Genesis 5

September 28, 2020October 3, 2020 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary of Genesis 5:

A written account of Adam’s line.  God created man (Adam) in His likeness.  Then Adam had a son, Seth, in his likeness instead of God’s since Adam had ushered sin into this world.  Seth had Enosh.  Enosh had Kenan.  Kenan had Mahalalel.  Mahalalel had Jared.  Jared had Enoch.  Enoch had Methuselah.  Methuselah had Lamech.  Lamech had Noah.  Noah had Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Enoch walked with God so he did not die we are told.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 5, Day 2: Genesis 5

3) Everyone lived, had kids, and then died. This set the pattern for all of mankind.

John 3:6-8: You must be born again in the Spirit

John 8:24:  If you don’t believe in Jesus, you will die in your sins

Romans 5:14:  Death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses.  Adam was the pattern of the one to come.

Romans 6:23:  The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus

4) Enoch was the only one who didn’t die. He was just taken by God. Hebrews tells us that “without faith, it’s impossible to please God” and to be with God, he has to please him. So Enoch was a man of faith. Jude tells us he was the seventh from Adam. Because his prophesy is recorded, one could infer that Enoch was special as being of faith and many others were wicked, meaning God’s judgement (the flood) was coming soon.

5a) To follow God’s commands in the Bible; to put God first in all that you do. To walk in friendship, love, and companionship.

b) Personal Question. My answer: Faithful. Not the best, most certainly. Sometimes He’s first; other times, He’s not.

6) Personal Question. My answer: It’s normal. If you are a believer, there is nothing scary about death.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 5, Day 2: Genesis 5

Here’s the first of the many lists of tracing Jesus’ descendents from Adam that are in the Bible. Dull reading, but super important.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 5, Day 2: Genesis 5

Bible scholars note that this is probably the end of Adam’s account and the rest of the book of Genesis is Moses’ writings. Adam wrote down the account of Creation, presumably given to him by God. From Genesis 2:4 to here is Adam’s writings.

Mankind is the name God gave humanity. There is nothing sexist in this.

Time Frame

If no one was left out, this tells us that it was between 4,000 and 5,000 years from the Creation of Adam and Eve to Jesus, which varies significantly with history. Many people believe humans did live that long pre-flood due to the fact mankind was “new” with no frailities yet and that a blanket of water vapor still surrounded the earth (Genesis 1:6-8).

If Adam had a lot of kids, there very well could have been one million people on the earth by the time he died, putting billions on earth by the time of the flood.

Every person has been born in Adam’s image and likeness except Jesus.

walk with God www.atozmomm.com

Enoch

Walking with God means walking by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7), walking in the light (1 John 1:5-7), and walking in agreement with God (Amos 3:3).

Enoch began to walk with God in a special way after the birth of Methuselah. The name Methuselah means, when he is dead, it shall come. Enoch had a special awareness from God that judgment was coming, and this was one of the things that got him closer in his walk with God.

Jude 14 also tells us Enoch was a prophet and that he could see the second coming of Jesus.

Noah was born only 14 years after the death of Seth, Adam’s son (Genesis 5:7-8). Seth died in year 1042 from creation and Noah was born in year 1056 from creation, if the genealogies are consecutive and without gaps.

Noah could have known and spoken with Adam’s grandson, Enosh, and his other grandchildren. Since Adam and Eve had sons and daughters after Cain, Abel, and Seth (Genesis 5:3-4), it is possible that Noah spoke with one of the unnamed sons or daughters of Adam and Eve.

In Genesis 5 we see that all these men died. They were all under sin and all subject to death. Some of them were great men, but none of them was the deliverer God had promised.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 4, Day 5: Genesis 4:17-26

September 24, 2020October 3, 2020 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary Genesis 4:17-26:

Cain got married and had sons who got married and had sons of their own. Lamech, one of the descendents of Cain, committed murder as well. Eve gave birth to another son named Seth.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 4, Day 5: Genesis 4:17-26

14) They lived in tents and raised livestock. They invented musical instruments, such as the harp and flute, and learned to play them. They learned to work bronze and form tools. They built cities.

15) Seems like the murder tendency runs in the family and that revenge is acceptable. Inferring from Cain’s relationship, it is probably not a close relationship and their activities make it seem more man-centered than God-centered. Lamech boasts and claims a greater retribution than God could deliver — a clear sign of self-centeredness rather than God-centeredness. From the murder, we can infer that they were okay with committing crimes.

16) Seth replaced Abel and the hope is that he will be closer to the Lord than Cain, God-fearing, and loving of God. God will answer those who call on His name.

17) Personal Question. My answer: God offers us grace no matter what we do or how much we turn from Him. Faith is what matters more than what you bring to Him. He wants your heart more than a token gift.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 4, Day 5: Genesis 4:17-26

The Bible is moving on, quickly running through many generations here so that we have a record of Adam’s line (and Jesus’s) before we move on to Noah in Genesis Chapter 5, our next lesson.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 4, Day 5: Genesis 4:17-26

Cain married his sister, which was not against God’s law until Moses (Leviticus 18:9, 18:11, 20:17, and Deuteronomy 27:22.

Necessity demanded that Adam’s sons marry his daughters. The gene pool of humanity was pure at this point. However, as time went on, God decreed there no longer be marriage between close relatives because of the danger of inbreeding.

Other examples of sibling marriages: Abraham married his half-sister Sarah (Genesis 20:12).

Advancement of Man Amidst Spiritual Decline

We see humanity’s rapid advancement here. Cities were founded (Genesis 4:17), homes were built, music and the arts were innovated, and metalworking began.

The name Lamech may mean conqueror. He was the seventh from Adam on Cain’s side. Lamech’s arrogance (Genesis 4:23-24) is a contrast to Enoch, who was the seventh from Adam on Seth’s line (Jude 14).

cities progress of man in genesis bsf www.atozmomm.com

Biblical first: Lamech was the first bigamist in history, going against God’s original plan for one man and one woman to become one flesh (Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:4-8). The names of his wives and daughter show the emphasis in his heart: Adah means, “pleasure, ornament, or beauty.” Zillah means, “shade” probably referring to a luxurious covering of hair. His daughter’s name was Naamah, which means, “loveliness.” Lamech’s culture was committed to physical and outward beauty.

Lamech boasted about his murder, believing he could deliver a greater retribution than God. This shows just how far man has fallen and how far they have pulled away from God in a short amount of time.

The Devolvement of Humanity

The city was Cain’s city; the focus of Lamech was his beautiful wives and his own perceived strength. But for all of Lamech’s boasting, neither he nor his descendants are ever heard of again in the Bible. He came to nothing.

Adam and Eve had many children who were not specifically named in the Biblical record, but Seth replaced Abel in some sense and was the one to whom the promise of a deliverer from the seed of the woman (Genesis 3:15) would be passed.

Some have called Genesis 4:26 the first revival, because it was the first indication of a spiritual resurgence after a clear decline.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 4, Day 4: Genesis 4:13-16

September 23, 2020October 3, 2020 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary of Genesis 4:13-16:

Cain protests his punishment to God, saying he won’t be able to bear it and he’ll be killed (which, no offense, seems just retribution to me). God, once again in His infinite mercy, puts a mark upon Cain so that no one will harm him. So Cain is exiled to the land of Nod, east of Eden.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 4, Day 4: Genesis 4:13-16

11) He’s a victim. Everyone is against him. Life is not fair, and he’s complaining about it.

12) Personal Question. My answer: I think I accept it much better than Cain. Confess and be forgiven then you move on with life, trying to do better and be better. That’s all God asks of us as we move towards Him.

13) Personal Question. My answer: God is infinitely merciful. It’s comforting to know that no matter how sinful I am, God is there, holding me up, forgiving me, and still caring for me.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 4, Day 4: Genesis 4:13-16

I don’t feel sorry for Cain and his victim mentality. He still is being cared for by the Lord when he did deserve death as well. Wondering who these “others” are who will kill him and where they cam from. I also always thought the mark of Cain was a bad thing because of what Cain did and his sin. Turns out, the mark of Cain is God’s protection over him.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 4, Day 4: Genesis 4:13-16

Still, Cain has no remorse. He’s mad about his punishment, not that his brother is dead by his hand. This is so many people today. They hate that there are consequences for their sin; they don’t hate the sin itself.

Cain could not die; after all, there was not a lot of people on earth.

No one knows what this mark was God placed on Cain.

Future note: We’ll learn in Genesis 5:4 that Adam had other sons and daughters, which could be the “others” Cain was talking about. Remember that Adam and Eve lived hundreds of years. This means that Cain’s future relatives could kill him.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 4, Day 3: Genesis 4:8-12

September 22, 2020October 3, 2020 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary of Genesis 4:8-12:

Cain lures Abel out to the fields and murders him. God knows what happened and questions Cain, who claims he has no idea where Abel is. God curses Cain to be a restless wanderer on the earth and that no food will grow for him.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 4, Day 3: Genesis 4:8-12

7) Cain lures Abel out to the fields.

8 ) Again, God gives humanity (in this case, Cain) a chance to confess their sins and accept responsibility for what they have done. Cain basically spits in God’s face with his denial.

9a) Because then we would have to admit that we are wrong, and for some reason, that’s exceedingly difficult to do.

b) Personal Question. My answer: A big impact. Definitely less ill will towards others and smoother relationships all around.

10) God always provides us a way out (1 Corinthians 10:13). Sin is a choice. Oftentimes, God will “speak” to us (like our conscious) in an effort to get us to not sin. Still, it’s a choice to choose God or choose sin.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 4, Day 3: Genesis 4:8-12

It amazes me how people lie outright to God even though God knows the answer. You can almost feel how sin has consumed Cain since he has no remorse for what he has done. Here’s where the saying, “I’m not my brother’s keeper” comes from.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 4, Day 3: Genesis 4:8-12

Cain Murders Abel

This was premediated murder, even worse that murder. Still Cain could have changed his mind. It was too late; evil and sin had consumed his heart.

Biblical First: Murder. Cain knew how to kill animals. And it seems man inherently knows how to kill others.

So ends Eve’s hope of Cain as the redeemer.

Cain was supposed to be his brother’s keeper. After all, he was the oldest son; he was supposed to look after his brother.

Cain killed out of jealousy alone, which shows just how poweful it truly is.

Jude 11 warns us of the way of Cain, or unbelief and empty religion that leads to sins such as persecution, murder, and revenge.

People will have a form of godliness but deny its power (2 Timothy 3:5).

cain's punishment for mudering abel bsf genesis chapter 4 www.atozmomm.com

God’s Punishment of Cain

We see blood crying out to God from the ground in Numbers 35:29-34 where the blood of unpunished murderers defiles the land.

The blood of Abel spoke; the blood of Jesus speaks, of grace and redemption as sin is judged (Hebrews 12:24).

Cain’s curse was worse than Adam’s. If farming was hard for Adam (Genesis 3:17-18), it would be impossible for Cain. Adam was merely driven from Eden (Genesis 3:24); Cain would find no resting place on earth (a fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth is other Bible translations).

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 4, Day 2: Genesis 4:1-7

September 21, 2020October 3, 2020 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary of Genesis 4:1-7:

Eve gave birth to Cain and then Abel. Cain was a farmer; Abel was a shepherd. Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to God. Abel brought his choicest fat portions from the firstborn of his flock to God. God looked more favorably upon Abel because of this. This angered Cain. God saw Cain’s heart and spoke to him about his anger, offering advice to turn away from sin.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 4, Day 2: Genesis 4:1-7

3) Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to God. Abel brought his choicest fat portions from the firstborn of his flock to God. Abel brought God his best, while Cain just brought God some of his crops. God wants our best always.

4) Abel brought his best to God because he loved God and had a heart for God. Cain did not. Abel had faith according to Hebrews; Cain apparently did not.

5a) Cain was angry that Abel’s gift was accepted by God and God showed Abel more favor. He was mad because Abel made him look bad. He blamed Abel and not himself. He was full of pride.

b) Personal Question. My answer: I usually get defensive at first. It takes me a minute to admit I was wrong. This is human nature. As a broken human, we want to be right and think we are right because we are proud.  It is from our broken nature.

6) Personal Question. My answer: God knows our hearts. He knew Cain was thinking about wrong-doing against Abel, and in His infinite mercy, He tries to prevent Cain from following through and giving in to sin. God never gives up on us. He has hope for us up until the choice to sin has been made.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 4, Day 2: Genesis 4:1-7

No one likes leftovers, especially God. Cain it seems brought God his leftovers. We learn that God wants our best always, whether it’s tithing to the church or giving our best to others as Jesus did.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 4, Day 2: Genesis 4:1-7

Biblical First: This is the first mention of sex in the Bible. In other versions of the Bible besides NIV (BSF’s chosen version), the term know is used for this moment. “To know” is used often in the Bible in this sense (Genesis 4:17, 4:25, 38:26, Judges 11:39, 1 Samuel 1:19). It shows how sex is used to enhance the bonding between man and woman. Most likely, Adam and Eve did have sex before the Fall.

The name Cain meant, I’ve got him or Here he is. Eve probably thought that Cain was the seed that God promised, the deliverer who would come from Eve  (Genesis 3:15). There is a sense in which Eve said, “I have the man from the LORD.”

The fact that Cain grew crops and Abel was a shepherd shows that man did not spend hundreds of thousands of years as hunter-gatherers. They always farmed and tended animals.

Some Bible scholars believe that Cain brought his offering to the tree of life because cherubim guarded the way to the tree of life (Genesis 3:24), and cherubim are always associated with the dwelling place or meeting place with God (Exodus 25:10-22). It’s possible that Cain, Abel, and later others met with God at the tree of life, where the cherubim guarded access to the tree and prevented any from eating its fruit. However, this is not proven.

While some may say that Abel’s sacrifice of animals was why he was favored due to the blood aspect, grain offerings are accepted in the Old Testament ( Leviticus 2) as well. God’s favor is a heart matter, not a physical matter.

dark cloud looming sin in bsf's study of genesis www.atozmomm.com

Cain’s Sinful Heart

(Hebrews 11:4) clears up the matter. Abel had faith; Cain did not.

The fat of the animal was prized and was to be given to God when the animal was sacrificed (Leviticus 3:16-17 and 7:23-25). The burning of fat in sacrifice before God is called a sweet aroma to the LORD (Leviticus 17:6).

In the beginning, one animals was needed as atonement for each perons. Later, at the Passover, it will be one lamb for a family. Then, at the Day of Atonement, it was one lamb for the nation. Finally, with Jesus, there was one Lamb who took away the sin of the whole world (John 1:29).

Presumably God said or showed His favor of the sacrifices in some way. Perhaps they were consumed by fire from God (Judges 6:21; 1 Kings 18:38; 1 Chronicles 21:26; 2 Chronicles 7:1) from heaven or from the flaming swords of the cherubim (Genesis 3:24).

God graciously warns Cain to resist sin and not give in. He knows that Cain is contemplating. God has to be our master, or we will be slaves to sin.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 3, Day 5: Genesis 3:20-24

September 17, 2020October 3, 2020 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary of Genesis 3:20-24:

Adam named Eve, and God made them garments of skin to wear. Because of Adam’s disobedience, knowledge, and sin, Adam would not be allowed to live forever. God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, stationing cherubim and a flaming sword to guard the way to the tree of life.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 3, Day 5: Genesis 3:20-24

13) Because of Adam’s disobedience, knowledge, and sin, Adam would not be allowed to live forever. God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, stationing cherubim and a flaming sword to guard the way to the tree of life.

14) Personal Question. My answer: Even in our downfall, God loves us. He personally made Adam and Eve clothes to wear before they were banished from the Garden. What other creator would do such a thing? As we know, He never abandons His creation. How amazing is that?!

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 3, Day 5: Genesis 3:20-24

Great overall lesson where we see God’s great love for us all.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 3, Day 5: Genesis 3:20-24

Eve was called a female (Genesis 1:27), a helper comparable (Genesis 2:18), a woman (Genesis 2:22, 23), and a wife (Genesis 2:24, 25; 3:8) before Adam named her. This does not mean God did not have a name for Eve, but we are told what the name is in Genesis 5:2: He called them Mankind.

The idea that the woman takes her name from the husband, and the idea that both genders are encompassed in terms like mankind, humanity, and chairman is Biblical.

Adam named Eve in faith, trusting God would bring forth a deliverer from the woman because God said He would defeat Satan through the Seed of the woman (Genesis 3:15).

In order for Adam and Eve to be clothed, a sacrifice had to be made. An animal had to die. Without shedding of blood there is no remission (Hebrews 9:22). This, together with the expression of faith in God’s promise indicated in the naming of Eve (Genesis 3:20), indicates that Adam and Eve were rescued from their sinful condition.

In mercy, God protected Adam and Eve from the horrible fate of having to live forever as sinners by preventing them from eating from the tree of life.

Cherubim are always associated with the presence and glory of God (Ezekiel 10, Isaiah 6, Revelation 4). When cherubim are represented on earth (such as in the tabernacle, Exodus 25:10-22), they mark a meeting place with God. Though Adam and Eve and their descendants were prevented from eating the fruit of the tree of life (by God’s mercy), they could still come there to meet God. This was their “holy of holies.” Therefore, it was important to send cherubim and a flaming sword to guard the way to the tree of life.

god's promise rainbow www.atozmomm.com

What Happened to the Garden of Eden?

This is the last historical mention of the Garden of Eden in the Bible. We can speculate that God did not destroy it, but left it to the effects of the curse so it probably deteriorated from its original condition, blending into the surrounding geography.

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 3, Day 4: Genesis 3:14-19

September 16, 2020October 3, 2020 by atozmom, posted in BSF Genesis 2020/2021

Summary of Genesis 3:14-19:

God punishes everyone involved in the Fall. The serpent is cursed above all and made to crawl on its belly. Enmity is put between Satan and mankind. Jesus will crush Satan. The woman will have pain during childbirth, and Adam will rule over her. Adam will toil for food all the days of his life and God cursed the ground. He will return to the earth as dust (or eventually die).

BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 3, Day 4: Genesis 3:14-19

10) Life got hard. The woman will have pain during childbirth, and Adam will rule over her. Adam will toil for food all the days of his life and God cursed the ground. He will return to the earth as dust (or eventually die).

11) Jesus will crush Satan. We are healed by Jesus’ wounds, and will be save when all have come to repentance. “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet”  (Romans 16:20)

12) We all die; those who accept Jesus as their Savior will live again.

Jesus was sent to redeem his people, bring grace, and offer justification through his death so that we may have eternal life.

We were born sinners.  But Jesus can redeem us.  The results and consequences for us today are we have a choice:  to choose or reject Jesus.  Choose Jesus=life.  Reject Jesus=death.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 3, Day 4: Genesis 3:14-19

I find it interesting that God could have killed Adam and Eve right then and there and ended humanity and given up on us. But He doesn’t because He loves us. It’s interesting how God created man knowing we would sin and He created us as weak humans without the power to resist sin. Such a dichotomy to chew on.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Genesis: Lesson 3, Day 4: Genesis 3:14-19

First the creature used in the temptation is cursed. From beauty to ugly in an instant. Adam and Eve were probably terrified. There is a dislike between snakes and humans and between Satan and  humans.

Satan will forever be defeated  (Isaiah 65:25, Micah 7:17)

In Jesus, we share in the victory over Satan: And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly (Romans 16:20).

Enmity has the idea of ill will, hatred, and a mutual antagonism.

The First Gospel

God announces Jesus’ final defeat of Satan.

The heel is the part within the serpent’s reach. Jesus, in taking on humanity, brought Himself near to Satan’s domain so Satan could strike Him.

This prophecy also gives the first hint of the virgin birth, declaring the Messiah – the Deliverer – would be the Seed of the Woman, but not of the man.

Genesis 3:15 has been called the proto-evangelium, the first gospel. Martin Luther said of this verse: “This text embraces and comprehends within itself everything noble and glorious that is to be found anywhere in the Scriptures” (Leupold).

“This is the first gospel sermon that was ever delivered upon the surface of this earth. It was a memorable discourse indeed, with Jehovah himself for the preacher, and the whole human race and the prince of darkness for the audience.” (Spurgeon)

Food for Thought: God’s plan wasn’t defeated when Adam and Eve sinned because God’s plan was to bring forth something greater than man in the innocence of Eden. God wanted more than innocent man; His plan is to bring forth redeemed man.

Redeemed man – this being who is greater than innocent man – is only possible because man had something to be redeemed from.

Food for Thought: Women bring forth children with more pain than just about any other creature.

Your desire shall be for your husband: This is true of women in a way that it is not true for men. Barnhouse explained: “The desire of man toward his wife alone is solely by God’s grace and not by nature.”

The word for desire is used in Genesis 4:7 of the desire of sin to master over Cain. Because of the curse, Eve would have to fight a desire to master her husband, a desire that works against God’s ordained order for the home.

Adam’s headship as a husband was established before the fall (see Genesis 2:18 and 2:22).

Because of Adam, there is a curse upon all creation.

The curse promised thorns and thistles, and we remember that Jesus was crowned with thorns (Matthew 27:29). In this way, Jesus bore the curse for us.

Adam’s work was now cursed. End of labor would be death.

Because of Adam:

  • Sin entered the world (Romans 5:12).
  • Death came to all mankind (Romans 5:15, 1 Corinthians 15:22).
  • Death reigned over man and creation (Romans 5:17)
  • All men were condemned (Romans 5:18).
  • All men were were sinners (Romans 5:19).
