BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 9, Day 4: Revelation 4:6b-8

Summary of Revelation 4:6b-8

There was a sea of glass in front of the throne. Four living creatures were surrounding the throne. They were covered in eyes. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.”

9) Four living creatures were surrounding the throne.

10) Holy, Holy, Holy: this means that God is holy, pure, perfect.

Lord God Almighty: God is Lord over all things.

Who was, and is, and is to come: God has always existed and will always exist. He is the Alpha and the Omega. He is eternal.

11a) Praising God means to worship Him. It expresses your gratitude for Him. You acknowledge his greatness and worth. You can praise God in worship, singing, dancing, prayer, studying His Word, and more.

b) I still have a job. I still have a home. I have my health and my family. I lead a good life. Everything is from Him. Be grateful for everything, and do everything in God’s name.

courtesy of https://theleapoffaith.org/

From Ezekiel 1:4-14 and 10:20-22, the creatures are cherubim. Satan used to be one of these till he was thrown out of heaven for his sins. You’ll find cherubim in the tabernacle (Exodus 25:17-22 and 26:1-31).

The eyes mean they see things and have a high intelligence and understanding.

Each has a different face. Of course, there is much debate about what these four faces represent, from each book of the 4 Gospels to virtues, angels, apostles, and more.

They do represent all of creation: animals (wild and domestic), birds, and mankind.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 9, Day 3: Revelation 4:4-6a

Summary of Revelation 4:4-6a

There were 24 other thrones surrounding God’s throne in heaven that John saw. 24 elders sat upon them. They were dressed in white with gold crowns on their heads. Lightning, rumblings, and thunder came from the throne. 7 lamps were lit (the spirits of God). A sea was in front of the throne. 4 living creatures were around the throne and they were covered in eyes.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 9, Day 3: Revelation 4:4-6a

6) 24 elders surrounded the throne. White symbolizes purity, so they were pure to be with God. They are either humans or angels.

7) God is all-powerful. He commands nature. He is the God of light. He commands all things, including the creatures.

8 ) Exodus 24:9-11: Pavement lay under God’s feet.

Isaiah 6:1-7: God was seated on a throne. His robe filled the temple. Seraphim were around him, singing to him and praising him.

Ezekiel 1: He saw a cloud with lightning and light. He saw 4 living creatures. He has a throne of lapis lazuli. Radiance was around God like a rainbow.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 9, Day 3: Revelation 4:4-6a

I personally can’t wait to see God. These visions are SO amazing!

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 9, Day 3: Revelation 4:4-6a

Bible scholars debate whether the 24 elders are human (Revelation 6:117:913-14) or angels (Mark 16:5John 20:12Acts 1:10. They say they represent the 12 tribes of Israel along with the 12 apostles.

Believers were crowns (1 Corinthians 9:252 Timothy 4:81 Peter 5:4).

Both saints and angels are depicted in white robes, which represents purity.

The 7 Spirits of God is the Holy Spirit seen Revelation 1:4 and Isaiah 11:2). Here, we see the Holy Spirit as the 7 lamps. The Holy Spirit can also be a dove (Matthew 3:16) and a flame of fire (Acts 2:3).

There is some sort of body of water before God.

Summary of Revelation 4:1-3

John enters God’s throne room. God had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow encircled the throne.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 9, Day 2: Revelation 4:1-3

3) John was invited to, “Come up here.”

4a) John entered through a door standing open in heaven. God saw God sitting on a throne. God had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow encircled the throne.

b) God because God would be the only one sitting on a throne in heaven (God and Jesus).

c) Jasper, ruby, emerald, rainbow

5) Amazement. Awe. Wonder.

I want to be invited into God’s throne room! What a sight!

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 9, Day 2: Revelation 4:1-3

“After this” marks another section in the book of Revelation. Now, we’ll be in heaven looking down on earth.

Fun Fact: “After this” is used 5 times in the Book of Revelation.

Many Bible scholars put Revelation 4-19 together as a section that focuses on God’s judgment on the world from heaven. Here, we’ll see the 7 scrolls, 7 trumpets, 7 signs, and 7 bowls.

Jesus is the voice, inviting John in.

Note, “church” never appears in this section in Revelation. Jesus addresses the churches in the first three chapters; now he focuses on individuals.

John was “in the Spirit” in Revelation 1:10. He’s in the Spirit here, too.

Jasper is white and ruby is red. John is describing the colors of light emanating from the throne.

The rainbow was God’s promise to Noah to never flood the world again. (Genesis 9:11-17)

This shows that although God can do whatever He wants, He won’t break his promises.

Fun Fact: God’s throne appears 16 times in Revelation 4 & 5.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 8, Day 5: Daniel 7

Summary of Daniel 7

In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream of the four winds of heaven and four great beasts: a lion, a bear, a leopard, and one with 10 horns. Next, he sees the Ancient of Days who defeats the beasts. The Son of Man was given authority, glory, and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

The four great beasts are four kings that will rise from the earth. But the holy people of the Most High will receive the kingdom and will possess it forever—yes, for ever and ever.’ The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it. The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings. He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time. Then the beast will be defeated, and the kingdom of the Most High will be everlasting.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 8, Day 5: Daniel 7

11a) Daniel sees the Ancient of Days who is seated on a throne attended by thousands. He defeats the beasts. The Son of Man was given authority, glory, and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

b) He took his seat to judge all of mankind.

12) God will win. There is no doubt. I have confidence in this by God’s words and in who He is.

13) His visions are full of violence and evil. There will definitely be more violence before the Second Coming and Jesus’ reign forever on earth. This should trouble everyone. However, knowing in the end God wins is the ultimate peace and comfort.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 8, Day 5: Daniel 7

I love how God is so good to give us previews of what is to come to encourage us.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 8, Day 5: Daniel 7

The Babylonians still reigned during this time.

The Great Sea is probably the Mediterranean Sea.

These four beasts represent kingdoms that rule over the earth.

  1. The first is the Babylonians, which is often represented by a lion with wings.
  2. The bear represented the Persian empire.
  3. The leopard is the Greek empire.
  4. The horrible beast is the Roman Empire.

The Ancient of Days is God, but there is some debate if this is God the Father or God the Son. However, most believe it is God the Father.

We see God in all of His glory here. He comes in judgment and with thousands of angels.

There may actually have been wheels on God’s throne as this was the case in some royal chambers. It could also represent God’s activities.

The books that were opened could have been the book of living (Psalm 69:28), remembrance(Malachi 3:16), and Life Revelation 3:5.

Jesus comes to destroy the fourth beast and set up his dominion on earth. Some nations will continue.

Fun Fact: The title “Son of Man” is used more than 80 times in the New Testament to describe Jesus.

The four kingdoms are conquered and are given to the people of God.

The ten kings that the ten horns of the fourth beast represent are not literal unless they are in the future. Some see this as the Roman emperors; others don’t. Truth be told, we are unsure.

The little horn shall come and reign for 3.5 years (time and times and a half). We see this in Revelation (11:2-3, 12:6 and 13:5).

Still, all will be given to the Saints at the End Times.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 8, Day 4: Daniel 6

Summary of Daniel 6

Daniel became extremely powerful in his position with the king, so much so that others plotted against him who wanted his power.  They tricked King Darius to put a decree in place that made it illegal to pray to any god or human except him in the next 30 days.  Daniel ignored the decree and prayed to God anyway. The king was forced to throw Daniel into the lions’ den. However, God protected Daniel.

Those who plotted against Daniel, their children, and their wives were thrown into the lions’ den instead. The king issued a decree that all of his kingdom must revere the God of Daniel. Daniel prospered during the reigns of Darius and Cyrus.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 8, Day 4: Daniel 6

8a) Daniel continued to distinguish himself in the service of the king as God blessed him.

b) Daniel’s enemies tricked King Darius to put a decree in place that made it illegal to pray to any god or human except him in the next 30 days. Daniel ignored the decree and prayed to God anyway. The king was forced to throw Daniel into the lions’ den.

c) Daniel did not change his ways. He remained true to God by giving God worship and praise despite the decree. God protected Daniel for his loyalty by sending his angel and shutting the mouths of the lions.

9) Those who plotted against Daniel, their children, and their wives were thrown into the lions’ den instead. The king issued a decree that all of his kingdom must revere the God of Daniel. Daniel prospered during the reigns of Darius and Cyrus.

10) It’s encouraging to know that God rewards His faithful servants no matter what else is happening in the world around them.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 8, Day 4: Daniel 6

I love this story! God is so good and so faithful, and Daniel proves what a faithful life can look like.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 8, Day 4: Daniel 6

There is no record of a Darius ruling during this time. However, Darius could be an alias (perhaps for Cyrus).

Daniel lived such a pure life that the only way to get at him was to go after his God.

King Darius signed the decree not thinking it was a trap for Daniel.

Daniel’s custom was to pray privately, which he did. Still, they found him in prayer.

We have to own our own decisions, which Darius did, and oftentimes they can haunt us. Luckily, we have a more powerful God than that.

Daniel is rescued from the lions’ den by God, who is faithful. Daniel’s faith saved him.

Daniel did no wrong to the king by worshipping his God.

Punishing the children and wives of those who plotted against Daniel may seem severe. However, that was the custom of that time and culture. If one was guilty, all paid the price.

This proved to be a powerful testimony for God’s kingdom. Because of Daniel’s faithfulness, he is rewarded by God, and others see and convert.

We saw this when Daniel interpreted Nebuchadnezzar’s dream and gave all the glory to God.

You can see how Daniel’s story parallels Jesus’. He was sentenced to death but rose again!

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 8, Day 3: Daniel 2

Summary of Daniel 2

Nebuchadnezzar was troubled by dreams that his magicians, enchanters, sorcerers, and astrologers could not interpret. The king became angry that no one could interpret it, so he gave an order to put all wise men to death, including Daniel and his fellow Jews. Daniel asked the king to interpret his dream. He and his friends, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, prayed to God for the answer. God answered Daniel in a prayer, and Daniel gave God praise.

Daniel interpreted the dream, giving God all the credit. Daniel tells Nebuchadnezzar that more kingdoms will arise after his. Then God will set up His kingdom, which will never be destroyed and will endure forever.

Nebuchadnezzar then declared Daniel’s God the God of all gods. Daniel was given many gifts and was made ruler over all of Babylon and the wise men. Daniel’s friends were promoted, too.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 8, Day 3: Daniel 2

6a) Daniel was facing execution. His response was to turn to the Lord Almighty for help to solve the king’s problem so that him and his friends could survive.

b) For God’s name, wisdom, power. For how God changes times and the seasons. How he controls earthly kings. How He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge. How He reveals deep things. He knows what is in darkness. Daniel thanks God for the wisdom and power he has given him and for making the king’s dream known to them.

c) God decides who is in power, when, and for how long.

d) He has renewed my faith in one of my purposes for my life. He has given me hope that I will continue in this purpose.

7a) That earthly kingdoms will rise out of God’s will, but that God’s kingdom is the only one that will endure forever.

b) God’s kingdom is what we all live and hope for. It gives me the strength to continue each and every day. It is the best.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 8, Day 3: Daniel 2

Love how Daniel turns to God to save him. Great message for all of us, even if death is not on the line.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 8, Day 3: Daniel 2

Fun Fact: This is the only section of the Bible written in Aramaic (Daniel 2:4-7:28), which was the language of the Babylonians.

Since no one could interpret nor tell Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, he wanted to kill all of his wise men. Daniel once again poses a solution. This is a great lesson for all of us when we come upon a problem. Rather than complaining about it; find a solution.

Daniel prays. God being God answers and saves Daniel, his friends, and others. God rewards Daniel for his faithfulness. God is, indeed, good.

Bible commentators disagree over which kingdoms Daniel is referring to there. Many think it was: the Medo-Persian, the Greek, and the Roman Empire. Some separate out Media and Persia as separate empires. Many believe these kingdoms are still future.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 8, Day 2: Daniel 1

Summary of Daniel 1

Israel had been conquered by Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians. Daniel was chosen to learn the language and the literature of the Babylonians so that they could then serve the king.

Daniel refused to compromise his beliefs about God when it came to eating tainted food and wine. He offered a test up and passed it and was granted the exemption to eat his own food.

To these four young men (Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah) God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds. They were wiser and  ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 8, Day 2: Daniel 1

3a) The conquering of Israel by the Babylonians.

b) He faced the challenges of food. He did not want to eat the food and drink that was defiled, so he came up with a test that showed his food was just as healthy as the king’s. He was granted the exemption.

c) To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds. They were ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.

4) God rewards those who stand for Him with amazing gifts, blessings, and abundance.

5) I try to stay away from social media and the news as much as possible (without being totally oblivious to what’s going on in the world). I try to fill my mind with God’s word as much as possible. I pray to God for strength to follow His ways and be faithful to His words and decrees.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 8, Day 2: Daniel 1

I love Daniel. He’s one of my favorite characters of the Bible. So strong in his faith, and God rewards him for it. Great stuff!

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 8, Day 2: Daniel 1

Daniel lived in the 6th century B.C.

The Jewish people were conquered by the Babylonians for 2 reasons:

  1. Idol worship
  2. Working on the Sabbath (Leviticus 25:1-7 and 26:2-35)

Nebuchadnezzar took the best and brightest young men to teach them his ways so that they would not rebel against him in the future.

Fun Fact: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are the Babylonian names given to these youth. Daniel’s Babylonian name was Belteshazzar.

Eating the king’s food violated Daniel’s beliefs because it was not kosher, was probably sacrificed to idols, and implied they agreed with Nebuchadnezzar.

In Daniel’s rejection, he came with a plan. God was behind their plan, so it worked.

God then blessed them with knowledge, skills, visions, and dreams. For their faithfulness, they were rewarded. How great is He!

God had a plan for Daniel’s life like He has a plan for your life.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 7, Day 5: Ephesians 4

Summary of Ephesians 4

Paul gives great advice here, urging believers to live a life worthy of God’s calling. Christ gave himself teachers to equip the people for his works to build up the body of Christ. He urges believers to put on their new self, which was created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Forgive one another as Christ has forgiven you.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 7, Day 5: Ephesians 4

12) We must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.  Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

13a) This means to get rid of our old ways (our sinful nature) and live like Christ (holy and true).

b) I try each day to be like Christ in how I behave and treat others.

14a) The Holy Spirit has challenged me each and every day by testing me with others so that I can treat others like Jesus. In all of my relationships, including with my spouse, I am tested to never go to bed angry and to build others up continually.

b) I believe He is bringing people to church to help them grow in Christ and lift others up, too.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 7, Day 5: Ephesians 4

Such a classic passage! Always a great reminder on how to live.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 7, Day 5: Ephesians 4

Paul calls for unity for God’s people. He next explains a worthy character, which is humble and forgiving.

We are all one body and one Spirit (the church). God in His grace gave spiritual gifts to leaders of the church for our benefit. Jesus appointed these people (apostles, prophets, evangelists, and pastors and teachers) to lead us and equip us for God’s ministry/work to strengthen us.

The goal is for all of us to come to faith in Jesus and for all of us to grow in the knowledge of the Son of God.

Not understanding is a heart problem when we don’t truly have Jesus.

We are a new creation in Christ Jesus, righteous and holy. The old man rebels against God. We must set our minds on Jesus.

We must tell the truth, not be angry, not steal, watch our tongue, not grieve the Holy Spirit, not be bitter, be kind, tenderhearted, and forgiving.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 7, Day 2: Acts 2:1-21

Summary of Acts 2:1-21

Pentecost came after Jesus’ death. All of the believers who were gathered were filled with the Holy Spirit as violent winds came from heaven and tongues of fire came to rest on them. Each heard their own language being spoken and were amazed.

Peter quotes Joel and explains that the Holy Spirit has been poured out on them. They have been saved!

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 7, Day 2: Acts 2:1-21

3a) Jesus prophesied that the Holy Spirit would come upon all believers when they believe in his sacrifice for them on the cross. The Holy Spirit lives inside of every believer. He will teach us all things and remind us of Jesus’ words. The Holy Spirit will testify about Jesus. The Holy Spirit will come once Jesus goes away. The Holy Spirit will prove the world wrong about sin, righteousness, and judgment.

b) They were believers in God and Christ all waiting for the promised Holy Spirit. They will then be saved due to Jesus’ death and receive the Holy Spirit.

4a) It speaks about how believers can and will prophesy. God has and will show wonders in heaven and signs on the earth before the Last Days. Everyone has and will call on the name of the Lord and be saved.

b) Most definitely. I believe I’d be a base, selfish person without the Holy Spirit and God’s guidance. I am doing the Lord’s work, not my own.

5) Many of my husband’s relatives. I believe the best way to show God’s word and love is by the way you act and how you shine the Lord’s Spirit to others. So, I will continue to be forgiving, gracious, helpful, evangelical, etc to them.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 7, Day 2: Acts 2:1-21

Great reminder about the beginning of the church and how we must continually work to spread the Good News.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 7, Day 2: Acts 2:1-21

Pentecost was an annual Jewish festival that took place 50 days after Passover. It celebrated the harvest (Numbers 28:26).

Interestingly, Pentecost also marked the day the Law was given to God’s people. Thus, it’s fitting that the Holy Spirit was now given on this day, too.

It’s been 10 days since Jesus went to heaven (Acts 1:3).

The word for Spirit in Hebrew and Greek is the same as for wind. Thus, the sound of heaven is a wind-like noise. The Holy Spirit is a breath from God.

Fire is purification, as seen in fire from heaven in other parts of the Bible.

Here is where we see the speaking in tongues. Many Christians do communicate in another language in prayer (1 Corinthians 14:14-15).

Peter, representing the apostles, speaks. He is bold and confident. He quotes the prophet Joel to explain Pentecost to his listeners.

Fun Fact: This is the first of 3 Old Testament passages Peter will quote in his speech.  Joel 2:28-32Psalm 16:8-11, and Psalm 110:1.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 6, Day 4: Revelation 3:14-18

Summary of Revelation 3:14-18

Jesus tells the church in Laodicea that he knows their deeds and that they are neither cold nor hot (meaning they are not faithful). They are spiritually wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. Jesus tells them to buy from him gold refined in the fire, so they can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so they can cover their shameful nakedness; and salve to put on their eyes, so they can see.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 6, Day 4: Revelation 3:14-18

9) These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. That Jesus is the Amen, the finality of it all, and the ruler of it all.

10) Jesus tells the church of Laodicea that they are lukewarm and that he wants to spit them out because of this.

11a) The Laodiceans believe they are rich; they have acquired wealth and do not need a thing. But Jesus says they do not realize that they are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.

b) You are blind to your need for Jesus and are extremely poor in Spirit. The result is you do not live a life for Him.

c) Staying humble, giving God the glory, always staying in the Word, realizing my blessings, praising him, and praying to him.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 6, Day 4: Revelation 3:14-18

I love this description of lukewarmness because we often can become complacent in our walk with Jesus. We need to always be hot and on fire for Jesus!

Laodicea was a rich Roman city. Of course, pagan worship was dominant, but there were many Jews living there. The church here that Jesus addresses was also addressed by Paul in Colossians 2:1 and 4:16.

Jesus chose the term lukewarm because the water supply that served Laodicea came to them as lukewarm due to the distance it had to travel. Therefore, the people would know exactly what Jesus was saying.

Jesus is the “Amen,” meaning “so it is done.” He is first in all Creation.

The people compromised their faith, so Jesus would spit them out.

Being lukewarm is being useless. You cannot please both God and the world. You must choose.  Being cold would at least drive you to Jesus.

Note here that Jesus addresses the church as the church of the Laodiceans. In the other passages, he refers to them as the town itself. Bible scholars believe Jesus is referring to them as such because they allow the majority to rule them, rather than God.

The church of Laodicea was spiritually poor AND blind to it.

If the church of Laodicea would turn to Jesus, they would be clothed, they would see, and they would be spiritually rich.

Complacency is spiritually crippling.
