BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 19, Day 3: Revelation 14:6-13

Summary of Revelation 14:6-13

John sees three angels:

  1. First angel: he proclaimed the gospel to those on earth
  2. Second angel: he said Babyon has fallen
  3. Third angel: he said those who worship the Beast will face God’s fury and be tormented forever (will face judgment)

A voice from heaven said: “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. They will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.”

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 19, Day 3: Revelation 14:6-13

6a)

  1. First angel: he proclaimed the gospel to those on earth
  2. Second angel: he said Babyon has fallen
  3. Third angel: he said those who worship the Beast will face God’s fury and be tormented forever (will face judgment)

b) To those who live on earth

7) The eternal gospel is the news that Christ made the ultimate sacrifice for us by dying on the cross and redeeming all of humanity.

8a)  “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” In essence, spread the word of Jesus Christ. He promises: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

b) Unsure on specifics. I just try to live my life, be an example to others of what a Christ life looks like, and give Jesus all the credit for everything.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 19, Day 3: Revelation 14:6-13

God is so good to give humanity signs and warnings of what is to come. He gives us every chance under the sun to come to Him. Therefore, we all are without excuse (Romans 1:20).

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 19, Day 3: Revelation 14:6-13

“Then I saw” is a demarcation of a new section here.

The first angel preaches the Gospel of the saving blood of Jesus, saying the hour of judgment has come. Humanity is to fear God and give Him the glory.

Fun Fact: This is the only place in the New Testament we see angels preaching the Gospel. Jesus has given this task to His people (believers).

The second angel announces the fall of Babylon. Babylon stands for unbelievers as we’ll see soon (Revelation 17)

The third angel warns of judgment for those who worship and follow the Beast (aka Satan). They will drink the wine of God’s fury. This mirrors what we read about the 5th and 6th trumpet judgments (Revelation 9:1-21, with the 5th trumpet in verses 1-11 and the 6th trumpet in verses 13-21). In Revelation 20, we’ll see the climax of all of this!

Fun Fact: The cup of wrath that God holds is mentioned in the Bible more than 13 times. Psalm 75:8 and Jeremiah 25:15 This is the cup that Jesus refers to his cry to avoid it if possible to God (Matthew 26:39)

Fun Fact: The Greek word for wrath here is used only 11 times in the Bible and 10 times in the Book of Revelation. It means a passionate anger.

The suffering in hell is real torment. God will be present in Hell but not His love. The torment will be for eternity (in the Greek, this is a very strong use of eternal).

Believers and those persecuted for their beliefs will have rest in heaven for eternity. Their good works follow them into heaven, giving them (and us) meaning for our work here on earth.

Fun Fact: Jesus warms of hell and eternal punishment more than any one else in the Bible.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 19, Day 2: Revelation 14:1-5

Summary of Revelation 14:1-5

John saw the Lamb on Mount Zion, and 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. He heard a sound from heaven. They sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among mankind and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 19, Day 2: Revelation 14:1-5

3a) John saw the Lamb on Mount Zion, and 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. He heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters and like a loud peal of thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps. And they sang a new song.

b) The 144,000 had the Lamb’s name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. The song they sang in heaven no one else could learn except them who had been redeemed from earth. They also did not defile themselves with women and were virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among mankind and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb. No lie was found in their mouths; they are blameless.

4) They were chosen by God to be saved and they believed in the sacrifice of Jesus as their Lord, Savior, and Redeemer.

5a) We are God’s as the Holy Spirit dwells within our bodies. How we behave, think, and speak reflects the character of Jesus. We walk in Christ’s ways. We should offer praise and gratitude to the Lord. We live in righteousness and truth. We live with Jesus’ mindset. They humble themselves and put others and their interests first. We are to do everything without grumbling and arguing. We confess our sins and are purified when we do so.

b) Speech. I am quick to speak without thinking. Behavior sometimes. Putting others first. In general, just being Jesus-like.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 19, Day 2: Revelation 14:1-5

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 is one of my favorite Bible verses. We are God’s, and we are to do everything for God and honor Him in every way.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 19, Day 2: Revelation 14:1-5

144,000 is 12 x 12 x 1000. Bible scholars disagree on who they actually are. Some say this is an actual number; others say they represent all Jewish believers. They could also refer to martyrs.

This is the same group referred to in  Revelation 7, believers given a seal of protection. Here, they are not defeated and are triumphant, worshipping the Lord with Jesus.

New songs are not often seen in Scripture, but when they are, they celebrate a great act of God.

Mount Zion is the place where Jesus will come and reign on earth after the Second Coming. Mount Zion can also refer to God’s people in general.

They belong to the Lord (as the mark shows).

The sound from heaven is the voice of God (other translations say ‘voice’). (Revelation 1:15 and 4:5)

The elders have harps  Revelation 5:8

The virginity shows they are spiritually pure. Yet, they probably are celibate. (1 Corinthians 7:25-35). They are Jewish believers (Revelation 7:4-8). They were redeemed to be firstfruits. They represent hope.

Psalm 23: God gives His presence. He gives His comfort. He refreshes your soul. He gives you His strength and courage. He guides God prepares a table for you, anoints your head with oil. God gives His goodness and love and protection. This helps me to know I am not alone in my struggles.

Matthew 11:28-29: God gives rest and knowledge. This lets me know that God holds my burdens, too.

1 Corinthians 10:13: God won’t let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. He also provides a way out when you are tempted so that you can endure it. This is comforting when your temptation causes your suffering.

2 Corinthians 12:6-10: God offers His grace and strength in our weaknesses. This is encouraging when our sufferings seem to be unending.

Hebrews 4:14-16: God offers us mercy and grace in our time of need. Jesus knows our temptations and our weaknesses. Therefore, we can take comfort in the fact that God forgives us and offers us all that we need in our times of need.

Revelation 21:4: God promises that there will be no more tears, death, mourning, crying, or pain in the Second Coming. It is comforting to know that one day, all of humanity’s suffering will end.

11a) We are called to love each other as God has loved us. We should praise God for our sufferings that bear his name and be overjoyed when his glory is revealed and continue to do good in the work as we’ve been called to do. We are blessed as the Spirit of glory and God rests on us. Since God comforts us in our troubles, we are to comfort others in their troubles with God’s comfort. You will have patient endurance.

b) I think I’m good at encouraging others and helping others understand His word. I hope my life is a testimony to others as to what God can do in your life when you are faithful. I hope I help others.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 18, Day 5: Various Passages

Some of the best Bible passages for being comforted during our sufferings and struggles and helping others, too.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 18, Day 5: Various Passages

Suffering is a part of life, and while it’s never fun, having a healthy, Godly perspective can make it easier to bear. After all, you have to walk through your struggles anyway, so wouldn’t you rather have God by your side than no one?

It’s a choice. Go through life alone, or go through it with the help of God. It’s really that simple for choosing to believe in Christ, too.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 18, Day 4: Various Passages

8 )

Psalm 73:26-28: So that we rely on God and come to Him. Suffering most definitely brings me closer to God. I pray more. I learn more. I change more.

Proverbs 3:11-12: God disciplines us because He loves us. God is trying to teach us things, and He uses suffering to do so. This brings us closer to Him, too.

Romans 5:3-4: Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. We all need perseverance and hope in our lives. When we suffer, we grow as people and we gain more hope for the future.

Romans 8:17: We share in Christ’s sufferings so that we can share in His glory. It’s hard for me to feel “glory” but I do anticipate it more when I suffer.

Romans 8:28-30: Suffering is for our good and for God’s ultimate purpose. We were predestined to be called, justified, and glorified. Sometimes suffering is exactly what we need to grow and to accomplish God’s purpose for our lives.

Philippians 3:8-9: Nothing is as important in this world as knowing Christ. And, because Christ suffered, we suffer and this draws us closer to Him.

Hebrews 5:8-9: Suffering teaches obedience to God and God’s will. Suffering can make us choose God and the harder path rather than the easier path.

9) Losing all of my animals in 14 months was very rough. It still hurts every day, and I miss them so. I don’t think I ever doubted God, but it was a very rough season where I leaned on Him the most.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 18, Day 4: Various Passages

Suffering can be a very interesting thing. It hurts, but at the end, you come out stronger. As long as you keep that perspective, God will take you to heights you never imagined possible.

Great passages about Christ’s suffering and how we can get through the times we suffer. It may be worth it to bookmark these passages and refer to them when you need them.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 18, Day 3: Read the Passages Accompanying the Following Questions

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 18, Day 3: Various Passages

6) Jesus suffered as it was God’s will for him to do so in order to be our sin offering/sacrifice for our justification/redemption. Jesus suffered by dying on the cross for our sins. He suffered thirst, hunger, and torture. He also suffered grief, sadness, and disappointment.

7) Christians suffer because Jesus suffered. They suffer because they believe in Jesus and the devil comes against believers/those that believe in Jesus. Christians become more like Christ when they suffer. I definitely didn’t suffer like the early Christians because of my beliefs, but I have suffered when I stood for a cause for Jesus.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 18, Day 3: Various Passages

It’s always humbling to read that Jesus suffered for us, but even harder to fully comprehend the magnitude of it all. It’s great to ponder these passages because each time we do, we take it a bit more deeper and it hits a bit more home.

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 18, Day 3: Various Passages

God allowed Jesus to suffer. They worked together to save all of humanity.

Jesus suffered because of our sins and because of God’s love for us.

Jesus came to the earth to reveal to us the Father.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 18, Day 2: Genesis 3; Romans 8:18-25

Summary of Genesis 3

The serpent questions Eve about what God said about the Tree of Knowledge. He tells Eve she will not die like God said when she eats the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. Instead, her eyes will be opened and she will be like God, knowing good and evil.

Eve saw the fruit as pleasing and she wanted wisdom so she ate. She gave the fruit to Adam, who was with her, and he ate too. Their eyes were opened and they realized they were naked, so they covered themselves with fig leaves. The next time God walked in the garden, Adam and Eve hid from Him. God called to them, wishing to see them. Adam responded that he was naked and afraid. God knew they had eaten from the Tree of Knowledge, and Adam blamed Eve. Eve admits she did eat the fruit.

God punishes everyone involved in the Fall. The serpent is cursed above all and made to crawl on its belly. Enmity is put between Satan and mankind. Jesus will crush Satan. The woman will have pain during childbirth, and Adam will rule over her. Adam will toil for food all the days of his life and God cursed the ground. He will return to the earth as dust (or eventually die).

Adam named Eve, and God made them garments of skin to wear. Because of Adam’s disobedience, knowledge, and sin, Adam would not be allowed to live forever. God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, stationing cherubim and a flaming sword to guard the way to the Tree of Life.

Summary of Romans 8:18-25

Sufferings are not worth comparing to our coming glory. We await our adoption and redemption into heaven. We wait for heaven patiently.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 18, Day 2: Genesis 3; Romans 8:18-25

3) All people suffer as punishment for Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden and ushering in sin to the world. Also, Christ suffered, so we do, too.

4) Loss and grief. Prayer and time.

5) No matter our earthly sufferings, we can look forward to the glory that awaits us in heaven. I know that days are full of work and suffering, but I strive to do God’s will for my life through it all.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 18, Day 2: Genesis 3; Romans 8:18-25

Great reminder that we do not belong on this side of heaven, and that no matter what happens here, it cannot compare to the glory we will experience one day!

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 18, Day 2: Genesis 3; Romans 8:18-25

The serpent deceived the woman who then told the man to eat. This brought in sin, pain, work, and suffering to all of humanity and the world.

Life in the spirit allows us to understand and endure suffering. We patiently await our future glory.

Suffering on earth is temporal; heaven is eternal.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 5: Reread Revelation 13:1-18

Summary of Revelation 13:1-18

John saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. The beast resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast. People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?”

The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months. The beast slandered and blasphemed God and all those in heaven. It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them.  All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life.

John saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. It exercised all the authority of the first beast and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast.  This beast performed great signs, and it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast. The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast. It forced all people to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name, 666.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 5: Reread Revelation 13:1-18

12a) Dragon, The First Beast from the Sea, The Second Beast from the Earth. The Second Beast is attempting to imitate Jesus, who is the Lamb of God. He is trying to appear meek and mild in order to deceive believers into thinking he is Jesus. He needs to appear unintimidating in order to succeed.

b) God’s message is one of love, peace, compassion, and gratitude. The deceptive trinity is trying to deceive everyone in order to get them to fall and turn to evil ways. It’s one of bullying, sin, and evil.

13a) Deuteronomy 13:1-4: We must not listen to false prophets who ask us to follow false gods. It is a test to see if we love God with all of our hearts and souls. We must obey God, keep His commands, and hold fast to Him. Matthew 7:15-20: False prophets will come to us in sheep’s clothing, but we will recognize them by their fruits. Mark 13:22-25: False prophets will perform signs and wonders we must we wary of. 1 John 4:1-3: False prophets say that Jesus is not from God.

b) Wisdom. From God, through prayer, and in His Word with the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 5: Reread Revelation 13:1-18

Great warning of false prophets. We must test those who perform signs and miracles. We must always go back to God’s Word and His character to ensure what we see is in line with who He is! We must always be vigilant!

End Notes BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 5: Reread Revelation 13:1-18

The Jewish people saw the sea as a frightful place. This may be because most people could not swim and people did not know there were others across the wide ocean from them. Therefore, the sea was seen as evil and chaotic in ancient times.

Note that the beast is not the dragon. Therefore, this beast is not Satan as we’ve seen in Revelation 12:3. It’s separate from the dragon/Satan.

Note the dragon has the same number of heads and horns as the beast (Revelation 12:3)

Remember horns are a symbol of strength and power in the Bible. Therefore, the beast/dragon would be hard to kill with 7 heads.

Fun Fact: The word Antichrist only appears in the Bible five times in four verses (1 John 2:182:224:3, and 2 John 7). The beast is believed to be the antichrist. This thing will be the opposite of Christ.

Note that the 10 crowns of the beast is different than the 7 of the dragon. Remember, 7 is the number of completeness. Here, Bible scholars believe the 10 refers to the number of nations that the beast rules over, which comes from Daniel’s vision of the antichrist (Daniel 7:24). Bible scholars are divided over which head/heads are wearing the crowns. Many see this as the beast that Daniel saw due to the 10 horns Daniel 7:7

The description of the beast also connects with Daniel’s vision Daniel 7  Daniel’s beasts represent governments, so many think that this beast does so as well.

Since the beast is worshipped, he is considered a man here who is supported by Satan. This is the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit (Revelation 11:717:8). Therefore, he is some sort of evil spirit.

The beast has been wounded, most likely by God, but the beast healed as mentioned here, too (Revelation 13:12 and 13:14)

The people are worshipping the dragon along with the beast since the dragon gave the beast authority. This is similar to God and Jesus, too. This is Satan worship, but people don’t like to acknowledge they are devil worshippers.

The dragon and beast will be strong, but not for long.

42 months is the 3.5 year time frame that Revelation keeps mentioning. The beast rules for the first half of the 7 years but under God’s authority. He is against those that God has saved.

Those who do not worship the beast will be persecuted/killed.

Those who do worship the beast will not be saved. Their names will be omitted from the Book of Life.

All of this happens according to God’s good plans. God is in control, and those who were saved were pre-chosen, too (Revelation 17:8).

John then says to listen up. If you lead others astray, you will pay the consequences for your actions.

God’s people must have faith and endurance to prevail.

This second beast is subordinate to the first beast and comes from the earth, not the sea.

This beast is a false prophet. (Revelation 16:1319:2020:10)

This makes 3 evil beings we’ve seen (dragon, the beast from the sea, and the beast from the earth) that form a perverse trinity.

It is important that we are made aware of these false prophets and their signs because we don’t know when they will show themselves. We must always be vigilant for them.

We must all be careful because the image of the beast will appear very real to us. It is what is referred to as the abomination of desolation (Daniel 9:27Matthew 24:15, and 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4).

If you don’t have the mark of the beast, you will most likely die because you can’t buy or sell goods.

Letters were assigned numeric values in ancient times, which is why the beast’s name is 666.

Bible commentators have put forth dozens of theories on who the person may be with numbers that add up to 666. Interestingly, the letters of Jesus add up to 888. 666 falls way short of Jesus (obviously). No doubt it is an unholy Trinity.

The beast is impersonating Christ. That is all it can do. It has no originality whatsoever.

Satan is mocking God.

BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 4: Revelation 13:11-18

Summary of Revelation 13:11-18

John saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. It exercised all the authority of the first beast and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast.  This beast performed great signs, and it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast. BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 4: Revelation 13:11-18

9)  The second beast exercised all the authority of the first beast and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast. It performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people, which deceived them. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast. The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed.

10a) To deceive believers.

b)

Moses (Exodus 7:1-5): To make himself known and to rescue His people

Elijah (1 Kings 18:30-39): To show the world and His people that God is the One True God

Jesus (John 11:41-44; 20:30-31; Acts 2:19-21): To show others that God is God, to show others that Jesus is indeed the Son of God who has come to redeem God’s people so that people may have everlasting life. To bring others to God so that they can be saved from eternal damnation.

11a) The mark was on their right hands or on their foreheads, and it was the number 666. The mark allowed them to buy and sell goods.

b) The mark is our name written in the Book of Life, the seal of the Holy Spirit. The benefits are immense. We receive the Holy Spirit so that we can have the mind of Christ, so that we can understand God and His Word and live by God’s laws. It means our sins are forgiven, we can be with God, and we receive eternal life with God in heaven. It means we are redeemed!

c) God protects us by giving us no more temptations than we can handle. He gives us weapons to avoid sin, such as prayer, His word, and the Holy Spirit to guide us. He intervenes when He needs to to keep us safe. He sends others to us with messages from God and to protect us from others. He is so, so good! I have way too many times when God has protected me. He has given me an innate feeling when something is not right, and I have bolted, which has saved me many times!

Conclusions BSF Study Questions Revelation: The Hope Lesson 17, Day 4: Revelation 13:11-18

I love the graciousness of God to make Himself known! I love the idea in Ephesians of us being God’s possession. What else could you want besides God to have and hold you?
